Khurana quits, eyeing role at national level
New Delhi, October 25 Mr Khurana may have declared his intention to fight for the cause of Delhi and its people, but his return has not set Yamuna on fire. Far from being sanguine, Delhi Pradesh BJP appears to be adrift. The future of Mr Khurana has not engaged its attention much as its newly appointed president Dr Harshvardhan supervises the preparations for Wednesday’s meeting of the party’s national council. The Delhi Pradesh BJP sources said that it was for the party’s apex leaders to assign a suitable role to Mr Khurana. “What role he should be given … what responsibilities the party would want him to shoulder … is something for the leadership to decide,” said a member of the party. The lukewarm response of the rank and file could be attributed to the relatively higher approval ratings for the Sheila Dikshit Government. Even allies like Shiv Sena are not particularly enthused by the return of Mr Khurana. In a statement released to media, the party said that Mr Khurana chose to quit because he was afraid he would be unceremoniously removed from the gubernatorial post. The party claimed that the problems of the small-scale industries trace their origins to the BJP’s rule when Mr Khurana was Chief Minister of Delhi. On his part, Mr Khurana said that if he had not gone out of Delhi, the party would have fared better in Delhi and Haryana, where it could win only one seat each out of a total of seven and 10 seats, respectively. Things, he said, would have been different. He admitted that although he would be back in active politics, he had nothing in mind now except to fight for the justice for the small-scale industries. When referred to BJP’s poor performance in Assembly elections under him, Mr Khurana said the party tally had improved from 14 seats last time to 20 seats. He said he had spent “sleepless nights” during the entire tenure in Rajasthan and after reading about the problems of Delhiites recently, especially the closure of industries located in non-conforming areas, his “restiveness” increased. “I cannot enjoy the comforts of Raj Bhawan while people in Delhi are facing problems. It is not in my blood,” he said and added that he had decided to quit the post to be with Delhiites. “I could not raise my voice for them while holding the post of Governor,” he said, although he pointed out that he had written to the Prime Minister to express concern over Sheila Dikshit Government’s move on relocation. |
SC stays trial against Babbar
New Delhi, October 25 While issuing notice to the Delhi Government on a petition filed by Babbar, the Bench comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Mr Justice S. B. Sinha said that the trial in the case, presently being conducted in a Patiala House court, be stayed till disposal of his plea. Babbar had moved the Supreme Court after his plea for stay of the trial was rejected by the Delhi High Court, which had modified the charges in the case by dropping some of them. Babbar, SP leader Amar Singh and some party workers were charged with rioting, causing violence and damaging public property by the Delhi Police during a demonstration near the Prime Minister’s residence in 2000 on the issue of water shortage in Agra, the constituency represented by the cine-star in Lok Sabha. The police, which had slapped charges against them under various provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC), had alleged that during the demonstration the accused persons had caused breach of peace and public order. The SP leaders were arrested by the police from the spot. However, they were later released on bail. The High Court had exonerated Amar Singh but it had retained some charges against Babbar and directed the trial court to proceed in the matter. |

Officer suspended for misbehaving with lady councillor
New Delhi, October 25 The suspension order was issued after the women councillors and some others demanded that the officer be suspended as he had allegedly misbehaved with the woman councillor. The Leader of the Opposition in the MCD, Mr Subhash Arya, threatened the Municipal Commissioner and the Mayor that proceedings of the house would not be allowed to continue until the commissioner announced the suspension order. It is learnt that this is not the first complaint against the officer. There have been numerous other complaints in the past. On September 16, just as Ms Preeti was about to leave, she saw that the office of the Licensing Department was open and some articles were being carried out in rickshaws. When she entered the licensing department office, she saw that drinks were being served to all the men present on the premises. It is alleged that they were disrespectful to the councillor. Sensing their mood, she stepped out of the office and bolted the main gate from outside. Even as she did that, an employee who seemed to be drunk made sarcastic remarks. When Ms Preeti first raised the issue in a ward committee meeting, there was bedlam. Since then, some officers have been transferred from the Shahdra Zone. Today, again she raised the issue, which finally led to the suspension of the Assistant Commissioner and ordering of an inquiry
into the conduct of other drunken employees and officers of the Licencing Department, which is located near Jhilmil Colony in Trans Yamuna area. |

Fire dept gears up for Divali
New Delhi, October 25 According to Delhi Chief Fire Officer R.C. Sharma, additional fire stations, comprising fire tenders and personnel, will be set up at 15 sites in the Capital at Divali. Most of the fire tenders will be stationed in crowded parts of the city like Sadar Bazar and Jama Masjid areas, where it is difficult for fire tenders to reach on time during an emergency. On the eve of Divali, too, the department will set up 10 additional fire stations in crowded areas in the city. Meanwhile, with the deadline of December 17 drawing near, the fate of 2,500 buildings in the Capital, not conforming to the fire safety norms, will be decided soon. If fire prevention devices are not installed by the given deadline in accordance with the Delhi Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Act, penal action will be initiated. Some of these buildings are located in the busy Karol Bagh and Sadar Bazar areas and also in some urban villages of Delhi, in which building plans have not been submitted to the civic authorities. The department, it may be mentioned, had issued public notices to owners and occupiers of buildings, which are over 15 m in height, saying that penal action will be initiated against if they do not comply with 12 minimum standards of fire safety by December 17. The order, which came in the wake of a Delhi High Court order on August 23, had stated that all buildings, whether in Lal Dora or extended Lal Dora areas, will have to comply with fire safety measures. The department has sealed many high-rise buildings in the past, even in areas like Connaught Place. While most of them have since been reopened after installation of safety devices, some like the Super Bazar is still sealed. |
