Power tariff hiked by up to 7%
New Delhi, November 13 The power tariff was revised approving a fuel surcharge of 2.5 per cent for Tata Power, 4.5 for BRPL and seven per cent for BYPL. So far no fuel surcharge was applicable on power bills. "We have hiked the tariff to help power distribution companies recover their power purchase cost. The surcharge will be reviewed again in February," DERC chairperson P D Sudhakar said. While hiking the power tariff by up to 7.5 per cent for domestic consumers, the DERC in July had withdrawn Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC) of around 8 per cent till October. The regulator had introduced PPAC in 2012 to help the private power distribution companies recover additional cost on account of increase in coal and gas prices. Delhi gets power from a number of gas and coal-based power generation plants. The private power distribution companies, particularly, BRPL and BYPL, have been demanding significant hike in tariff, citing rise in power purchase cost. BJP, Congress and AAP have strongly criticised the hike. Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay said the party will raise the issue with Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal and Lt Governor Najeeb Jung. AAP
condemns hike
The AAP condemned the DERC's decision of hiking electricity tariff on petitions filed by private power distribution companies (Discoms). "Tariff hike is a fraud with the people of Delhi who are being punished for not having an elected government," said the AAP while assuring to cut the power rates by half when it comes to power. Noting that the Central government should have strongly conveyed its reservation to the DERC on the issue and should have advised the DERC against hiking the tariff, the party stated, "We feel that the DERC has failed to perform its duty as an independent regulator. Its decisions seem to benefit the Discoms, which are under CAG scrutiny. The DERC should have waited for the CAG audit to be completed before revising tariff." The Discoms had filed these petitions with the DERC last month. Acting on their petitions, the DERC has added fuel surcharge. According to the party, there is enough evidence on record to prove that the Discoms have "fudged" their account books. |

"I have seen many ups and downs in life. In all my difficult times, nobody has ever prayed for me but the lamas (bhuddist monks) of Lahaul valley," said Gill who is still a favourite among the locals. "Talking to lamas and the locals, I began to collect the folk tales of that isolated culture. Fifty years ago, Lahaul was a remote Buddhist land of monasteries. All that has changed today with helicopter contact all through the harsh winter, wide roads, tunnels, snow ploughs, etc," recalled the author. "The Lahaul of old times has disappeared. We used to walk 13,000 feet to reach our destinations. The culture was intact at that time and that is what I have described in my book," he said. |
