20 traffic teams to manage festival rush
Jalandhar, October 1 Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dalbir Singh Buttar said the traffic police was prepared to keep the flow of traffic in the city under control. "We have constituted around 20 teams which will be responsible for managing traffic in the festival season. These teams will be deputed in the strategic areas of the city for controlling traffic. In markets, where there is a large footfall of visitors, additional force will be deployed," he said. The ACP said these teams comprise as many as 150 traffic police officials of which some would be in the patrolling unit while others will be stationed in specific areas. The ACP said they were also holding a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar to sort out the issue of illegal encroachments, which cause traffic jams in the markets. "At our own level, we are also holding meetings with the shopkeepers of various markets and are issuing them a warning not to keep items on the road. Still, if any violation comes to the fore, action will be taken," said the ACP. Besides traffic cops, regular police force will also be deployed in the markets to keep the traffic flow smooth and to avoid any untoward incident. |

AAP activists demand Dy CM’s resignation
Meet DC, submit memorandum; ask for CBI inquiry
Jalandhar, October 1 A delegation of about 40 AAP activists from the district met the ADC and submitted the memorandum primarily demanding the resignation of home minister and Deputy CM, Punjab, Sukhbir Badal for the worsening law and order situation in the state. The other demands of the Aam Admi Party include a CBI inquiry into the entire incident, dismissal of the Badal Government for its failure to maintain law and order in the state and creating an atmosphere of lawlessness. The activists of the party also demanded the imposition of President's Rule in the state. Brothers Harinder Singh (23) and Jatinder Singh (25) residents of Bhopur village (Machiwara) had been shot at from point blank range on September 27. While formerly ruled out as an encounter, the death was later held to be a murder. The ensuing controversy across the state saw the suspension of Khanna SSP Harish Kumar and dismissal of Machiwara police station SHO Majindra Singh, constable Yadwindra Singh as well as two home guards, Ajit Singh and Baldev Singh. Political conspiracy is said to be the reason behind the incident as both brothers — who were popular kabaddi players of their village — had recently begun supporting AAP. Activists of the party said they were assured by the ADC that there would be requisite follow up of their demands. AAP district unit head Tarandeep Singh said, "Across Punjab, similar problems are being faced at various levels by AAP activists. Even day-to-day problems are not being addressed. If the government does not act seriously on the demands of the party, a meeting of the state executive will take place after which we shall be instructed by the state executive on the next move by the party." "On the district level as well, on basic issues like roads, we have met the mayor several times and our demands haven't been paid heed to. We shall hold district level dharnas as well to get the administration to meet our various demands," he said.—TNS |

Festive season gets glittering start with low gold prices
Jalandhar, October 1 The price of a sovereign of gold (8g) has decreased by nearly Rs 900 since September 1. On Tuesday, one gram of 22-carat gold was priced at Rs 25,042 as compared to Rs 29,700 last year. The experts feel that it is bound to further decrease again and consumers may enjoy the dip in cost till mid-October. "The US economy is improving. More investors are turning their attention towards the equity market. The early indications of a recovery in the US economy have led to speculations of interest rate hike to be announced soon. Also, the strength in dollar normally leads to a fall in international gold prices," informed Vinay Jain, partner, Gujranwala Jewellers, GT Road. He however, further informed that the increased demand during the festive season and shortage of gold in the country due to high import duty of 10 per cent and the controversial 80:20 gold import norms may trigger upward momentum in the short-term but downward movement in gold prices is expected to start soon thereafter. While the experts are expecting a further dip in gold prices by the end of November, people have started purchasing in advance due to expected rise in gold prices in the festive season. "My daughter is getting married in January. But I have already bought jewellery for her as the prices are on the lower side nowadays. You never know, it may increase during the festive season," said Rashmi Ahuja, a resident of Adarsh Nagar. However, experts feel that if the government decides to introduce relaxations in high import duty or abolish the controversial 80:20 gold import norms, gold prices may plunge further. However, such actions by the government are not expected before the next budget. On the other hand, silver and uncut diamond jewellery have also reported a huge dip in prices due to the low gold prices. Also, investors around the globe are seen offloading their positions in gold. The net holdings in SPDR Gold Shares- the largest gold based ETF in the world, is presently at the lowest levels since 2008. The holdings have fallen by 43 per cent from its all-time high. Gold purchases by Central Banks have also declined. |
