Cops act to check traffic mess

The Chandigarh police have shot off a letter to the MC and the UT Administration asking them not to allow street vendors to run stalls from pedestrian paths and parking areas in the markets during the festive season as it leads to traffic jams across the city, leaving little space for visitors to walk.

UT staff, students to take ‘Swachhta pledge’ today
Chandigarh, October 1
In a withdrawal from the earlier practice when government employees and students used to observe Gandhi Jayanti as a national holiday, all employees of the Chandigarh Administration, including teachers, and students will be seen taking the “Swachhta pledge” before carrying out a cleanliness drive in their respective premises.

 

Traffic moves at a snail’s pace as a truck lies overturned at the airport light point on Wednesday. The mishap occurred while the driver was trying to take a U-turn towards Zirakpur. Cranes arrived at the spot, but failed to lift the truck, resulting in the disruption of traffic from 12.30 pm onwards till late in the evening.

This was stated by Col GS Chadha while interacting with mediapersons after joining as the Registrar of Panjab University here on Wednesday. The 54-year-old Registrar, who is a retired Army personnel, said the best practice of the Indian Army is to streamline work and he would implement the same by changing the work culture in the university, if required.

PU retains No. 1 position

Panjab University has once again retained its position as the number one university in India as per the Times Higher Education rankings of the top 400 universities in the world. In 2013, the PU had slipped in the 226-500 range in the ranking chart.

Disposing of as many as four execution petitions, the UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the State Bank of India Staff Association chairman to undergo two years’ imprisonment for failing to comply with its orders.

A local court sentenced a resident of Chandigarh, Sanjeev Sharma, to undergo simple imprisonment of one month and to pay a fine of Rs 3,000, for the offence of drunken driving. In default of payment of fine, he has to undergo simple imprisonment of ten days.

NRI’s car laden with valuable goods stolen

An NRI family, which came for their daughter’s wedding, had a bad experience when their car along with valuable goods worth several lakh rupees, was stolen last night. The car was parked in front of the house of a kin of the family at Phase 4. The police said, “valuable goods including clothes and gift items for the function were in the car. Luckily, the family did not left jewellery, which was also bought from Talwara, in the car.”
