Kalka, October 1
The Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) and the Congress suffered a major setback when their senior leaders and former municipal councillors from Pinjore joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the historical town today.

Ram Gopal Mehta, a senior HJC leader, who contested the previous Assembly elections from Kalka, along with his supporters and 13 former councillors (a majority of them from the Congress) joined the BJP, strengthened the position of the party candidate from Kalka, Latika Sharma.

The former councillors include Tarsem Gupta, Maya Devi, Parvesh Kumar and Fateh Singh.

Talking to mediapersons, Latika Sharma said she was getting a rousing response from voters across villages and towns during her election campaign. She said voters wanted development of the area and feel that this could be possible only after the BJP came to power in the state as well.

On the dual vote issue, she said it was due to the election officials who failed to delete her name from the voter’s list on its website.

“I had moved the Form VII dually filled in the office concerned in July, seeking deletion of my name from the voter’s list,” she said.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 1
Disposing of as many as four execution petitions, the UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the State Bank of India Staff Association chairman to undergo two years’ imprisonment for failing to comply with its orders.

The forum had issued a show-cause notice under Section 27 of the Consumer Protection Act to Varinder Thakur, chairman of the SBI Staff Association, Sector 49-A, asking him as to why penal action under the provision of law be not initiated against him.

The chairman had filed an appeal with the national commission, which was dismissed. The forum had ordered Thakur to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation and another Rs 54, 410 to some complainants in 2012.

While passing the order, the forum stated that the chairman failed to appear despite his presence being ordered to be secured through a bailable warrant.

“The bailable warrant was issued several times but could not be executed and ultimately reply/objections to the execution were filed by Varinder Thakur on December 5, 2013. The objection petition was dismissed and a show-cause notice was again issued to him on April 29 this year. He failed to appear in court despite summons. The chairman has been misusing the process of the court and has been delaying the proceedings in the execution on one pretext or the other,” stated the order.

Thakur had given loans without obtaining proper documents and following the procedures and rules of the society. Most loan bonds were incomplete and there was no proper resolution in the record of the society.

The forum observed that it appeared from the record that Varinder Thakur had played fraud on the innocent customers.

The complainants included Sandeep Chopra, Rupali, Guddi and Sheetal.
