Price rise: Cong leaders to gherao Parliament

New Delhi, July 5
Delhi Congress leaders today said that they will gherao Parliament House on the first day of the Budget session, demanding a rollback in the recent rail fare hike and protesting against the BJP-led Central government's 'failure' to curb rise in the prices of essential commodities.

Under the leadership of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Arvinder Singh Lovely, the demonstrators will assemble at 10 am on Monday at Jantar Mantar and launch a "Halla Bol Andolan", the party said today.

Speaking to mediapersons at a press conference, Lovely and Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Haroon Yusuf said the BJP-led Central government had failed on all fronts, and the good days that had been promised have turned out to be bad days for the people due to the wrong decisions and policies by the Centre.

"People are fed up of the soaring prices of all essential commodities, including food items, as the BJP seems to be content with its victory," said Singh.

Both the leaders alleged that in view of the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra, the rail fare hike in Mumbai's local trains was reduced, but the pravasis, who have made Delhi their homes, were severely affected by the hike as they have to visit their birthplace in other states, at least twice a year.

"The hike in the fares of rail freights has also caused an all-round price rise, and the Central government was trying to divert the attention of the people by creating a drama of taking action against the hoarders," said Yusuf.

They said the prices of essential commodities and food items have soared to the skies, and the administration was taking no action.

Yusuf, who is a former Delhi Power Minister, alleged that in a bid to hike power tariff on the direction of the Central government, people were getting only 12 hours of power supply out of 24 hours, so that power shortage could be cited as a reason for the tariff hike.

Both the leaders said that the BJP was against giving power subsidy during the Congress regime and it had also voted against giving subsidy during the Delhi Assembly session in February.

Revise biased rule on spending funds, AAP urges LG
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 5
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today asked Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to change a 'discriminatory' act that disallows MLAs from spending their funds for development work in the group housing societies here and threatened to launch a city-wide stir, if its demand was not met.

Addressing a press conference, AAP MLA Rajesh Garg said there is a rule that MLAs fund cannot be used for the welfare of the people living in group housing society flats, which is a 'discriminatory' act of the government.

"A large number of AAP workers and supporters will sit on a 'dharna' at DCC Chowk, Sector 9 of Rohini on July 13 against the discriminatory treatment to the residents of the group housing societies," Sanjay said.

He added that if the government does not change this rule, the party will stage protest across the national Capital.

"We urge the Lt Governor to change this rule and allow MLAs to spend their funds on the development works. Besides, flats and plots allotted by the DDA are maintained by the civic agencies," Rajesh Garg, an MLA from Rohini, told mediapersons here.

Garg claimed that there are more than 2 lakhs flats in about 1,000 group housing societies in Delhi where around 10 lakh people are housed. Despite this, MLAs funds are "not being spent" on development works like roads, parks, sewage, storm, water drains and streetlights situated inside these societies.

Another party leader Sanjay Singh also said that the AAP has decided to launch a series of agitations against the 'discriminatory act' of the government.

More jails to be constructed to decongest Tihar
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 5
To decongest the Central Jail of Tihar from the increasing number of prisoners, the Delhi government today said that the construction of new jails will soon be completed. "Tihar is overcrowded with about 10,000 prisoners as against its capacity to house 6,000 prisoners," said a senior government official.

Tihar Jail has nine jails in its complex while Rohini Jail has three jails.

The proposed Mandoli Jail will have six jails in its complex on a piece of land which was allotted by the DDA.

"The work of construction of all the six jails in the complex will soon be completed.

“The jail will have the capacity to house 3,700 prisoners. It will be commissioned by the end of December this year," said the official.

The official said that a jail will also be opened without bars for housing the prisoners.

The objective of open jail will be to mould the thinking of the prisoners towards positive activities by reposing trust in them to enable their socialization in society after the release.

"Only prisoners with good conduct and who are physically and mentally fit, willing to do hard work as prescribed, will be extended such a treatment," he said.

For construction of a jail in Narela, the land has been acquired at Tikri Khurd village and its payment has been made.

The construction will be started soon after completing the necessary formalities, he added.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 5
The brother of Mundka's Independent MLA Rambir Shokeen has been booked for allegedly beating up two supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Azad Singh in west Delhi's Nihal Vihar locality. The accused has been identified as Jagdev, alias Jagte, according to the police.

Jagdev stays with 34-year-old Rambir, a resident of Kamruddin Nagar village in south-west Delhi's Nangloi. In the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, Rambir had defeated Azad by a margin of 7,134 votes. Rambir had received 52,564 votes, while Azad 45,430 votes.

"Jagdev was called to Nihal Vihar police station for questioning, but he has not been arrested. At present, the probe is on to ascertain the allegations," said a police officer.

According to the police, the incident took place when Azad's supporters Satpal and Joginder Singh were putting up the BJP leader's posters on his birthday on June 30. They were near Daulat Ram Public School when Jagdev came there with his supporters in two Mahindra Scorpio SUVs at around 10.30 pm.

"Jagdev claims that Rambir's posters had already been put up in the area. It is alleged that Azad's supporters had brought down Rambir's posters to put up Azad's," said a police officer.

On the other hand, Satpal told the police that Jagdev and his supporters beat him and Joginder when they were putting up the posters on a wall. After a while Joginder managed to escape from there, while Satpal made a call to the police control room after Jagdev left the spot.

On the basis of Satpal's statement, a case was filed with Nihal Vihar police station. The local police took Satpal to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where his medical examination was conducted. Jagdev has been charged under Sections 323 voluntarily causing hurt and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code.

Satpal and Joginder live at Chajju Ram Colony in Kamruddin Nagar village and work as property dealers.
