Harsimrat talks of mini food parks
Ludhiana, July 5
Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Union Minister of Food Processing Industry, visited the Central Institute of Post-Harvesting Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) on the Punjab Agricultural University campus here today. She said her ministry would facilitate the creation of mini food parks in different areas of Punjab to give a boost to the processing of the local produce.

Young life snuffed out on highway
Jagraon, July 5
A youngster, in his twenties, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by some a vehicle on the Ludhiana-Bathinda highway near Raqba village at Mullanpur Dakha last night. The deceased has been identified as Jaswinder Singh, alias Happy (22), a resident of Hissowal village, near Sudhar.

Rs 2 lakh stolen from Pindi Street shop 
Ludhiana, July 5
Thieves broke into a shop on Pindi Street and decamped with Rs 2 lakh last night. According to information, the thieves stole the cash from the safe. Sanjay Puri, owner of the shop, informed the police about the theft in the morning. Ashwani Kumar, Division No. 1 SHO, reached the spot and investigated the matter.

No headway in daylight snatching case 
Ludhiana, July 5
More than 24 hours after the shocking snatching attempt, in which a Chandigarh-based scribe suffered serious injuries, there has been no clue to the snatchers. Despite having the CCTV footage of the incident, there has been no headway in the case and the police continue to grope in the dark.

Man booked for rape
Ludhiana, July 5
The city police have registered a case under section 376 and 506 of IPC against a person for raping a woman in the Jassiyan road area on Friday. The accused was identified as Lucky Arora of Sita Nagar. He was a friend of the victim’s husband and used to frequently visit their place.

The striking students of the College of Fisheries at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University who were hoping for a positive outcome from their meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and his wife, Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, were left disappointed with the “cold” response they got from the two leaders.

The Markfed Field Employees’ Union held its annual convention at Aggarsen Dharamshala, Haibowal. Bhupinder Singh was elected president of the new team. Addressing the gathering, he said the management should withdraw baseless cases against employees besides giving identical pay scales and allowances to newly appointed filed workers.

Cut-off list released
Students aspiring for admission to the Government College for Girls go through the cut-off lists in Ludhiana. Ludhiana: The cut-off list for admission to the first year of BCom, BCA, BBA and MA (Punjabi) were displayed at the Government College for Girls on Saturday. Anxious students and their parents visited the college campus to check the cut-off marks for these courses.

Civic body acts tough 
The MC claims to have challaned 20 residents of Ludhiana. Ludhiana, July 5
The rainy season has begun, so has the mosquito breeding. The Municipal Corporation authorities claim to have issued challans to at least 20 residents. The MC maintains that it found larvae in 10 areas while the Health Department said the larvae were found in just one or two areas. Both the departments are supposed to take care of the issue jointly but their statements differ.

Punjabi youths want to stay put in Iraq

While the evacuation of Indian citizens from Iraq has become a major issue, there are many Punjabi youths who do not want to leave Iraq and claim that things are not all that bad in the war-torn country.

De-addiction centre opened

Aas Kiran, a de-addiction and counselling centre, was inaugurated at Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, an NGO, today. Mayor HS Gohalwaria and DIG Yurinder Singh were the chief guests. Gurmeet Singh, Chief Administrator, Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, said the NGO launched a crusade against drug addiction in 1972.

The state government’s campaign against drugs has yielded good results. A number of drug addicts have started afresh. Most of them have given up the bad habit with the help of medicines and counselling. But the sad part is that a few addicts are still psychologically dependent on drugs. This was revealed by Dr Sudha Vasudev, head, department of psychiatry, Lord Mahavir Civil Hospital, Ludhiana.

Drug peddlers keep cops on toes

Police officials are on their toes, courtesy drug peddlers and addicts. Criminals, who earlier used to peddle drugs, have now taken to burglaries and snatchings.

Block development officials’ body elects office-bearers 
Ludhiana, July 5
The Block Development and Panchayat Officials Association, Punjab, held a meeting at the zila parishad office today. Ram Lubhaya was elected president of the association, Gurmeet Singh Dhillon was named vice-president while Pyar Singh and Navneet Joshi became general secretary and cashier, respectively. Navdeep Kaur, Roop Singh, Sanjeev Kumar, DK Maldi, Gopal Gagnjea, Jarkanwaljit Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Sukhpal Singh and Gurprtap Singh were elected members.
