AAP chief brainstorms
people-friendly steps
New Delhi, May 28 The party has already started implementing its concept of "mohalla sabhas" in the respective areas in line with its ambitious "Swaraj" model of governance and banking on the people's participation strategy it hopes to regain the lost ground after the Delhi drubbing during the Lok Sabha elections. In this regard, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal today called a meeting of its MLAs at his Tilak Lane residence where they were briefed about how to go about it. They were apprised about how to approach people to seek their suggestions and feedback on MLA funding. A handful of MLAs have started holding such gatherings and created mohalla sabhas knowing well that they do not have enough time in hand to take up developmental works with the fresh Delhi Assembly polls expected to happen anytime. "The Swaraj model will be put into practice for the first time in the country and MLA funds will be used as per people's needs and suggestions. We have divided the constituencies into mohalla sabhas and will hold meetings with locals to get their views on how and for what to be spent. They will be the ones to decide which agency will be awarded the work and which project is to be taken. A pamphlet saying-your money in your hand- will be distributed among people," Malviya Nagar MLA Somanth Bharti told The Tribune after the meeting. Ahead of the meeting, the former Delhi Chief Minister had informal sessions with the party's top brass during which the AAP's future roadmap was discussed, including organisational restructuring. |
Oz, a preferred destination
New Delhi, May 28 "We are very happy that so many Indian are interested in visiting Australia. Tourism is the vital part of the broader bilateral relationship between Indian and Australia and we expect that these numbers will keep on growing," said Australia's High Commissioner Patrick Suckiling. There were 16,000 visitors from India during the month of March, bringing the total in the first three months of the year to 43,800, an increase of 10.4 per cent compared to the same period previous year. Total arrivals in the financial year ended on March 2014 were 1,73,000, which is again up by 10.33 per cent in comparison to the same period last year. This made India the 11th largest inbound market for the arrivals. Australia has also become one of the preferred destinations of Indian students. There are around 50,000 students enrolled in Australia. The enrolments of Indian students in Australia are up by 33 per cent in nine months starting from July last year to March. "The increasing interest in Australia is significant in our bilateral relations. This growing level will drive our relationship into stronger future," said Suckling. He said that one of the good things about the number of Indians going to Australia is that many of them are in treasury sector and we have 40 treasury education institutes in Australia. "When Indians students go to Australia, they get purpose-filled qualification that helps them make their lives better," said Suckling. "We have a well-established tourist industry. We expect to double the number of arrivals from India in next few years. As more people come from different parts of the world, the tourist operators in Australia have developed facilities to cater to different tastes and cultures," he said. Stating the reason behind rising interests for Australia among Indians, Suckling said, "Indians are travelling more and they want to have more of international experience. There is a sense of strength of relations between the two countries whether it's through cricket or the welcoming environment." Indicating a close cooperation with the newly formed government in India, the High Commissioner said that the two countries will work for economic reforms. "Mr Modi wants to focus on training Indians. It was his priority. He wants to focus on infrastructural development. There is a potential to help with the strength that Australia has in terms of education, infrastructure and agriculture," Suckling said. |
