Political parties take to social media to woo young voters
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 23
Political parties in Uttarakhand are following the national trend and using social networking sites like twitter and facebook and mobile phone messaging applications like whatsapp in a big way to garner support of the masses, especially the youth, in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

According to an estimate, there are almost 20 lakh social media users in Uttarakhand and of which 60 per cent are above 18 years of age, which are the main target of every political party. Around 7.5 lakh users of the total 20 lakh are in Dehradun and Tehri districts alone.

All major political parties are working closely with their students’ outfits and are using social networking sites as part of their campaign strategies, particularly to woo the young voters. The morning starts with cutting newspaper reports and finding online reports about their leaders and parties and then sharing these one their dedicated facebook pages and twitter accounts.

Two members each from the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress are attached with the IT Cell of the Congress. This cell has the sole responsibility of drawing the support of the youths for the party through the social media.

Vishal Maurya, general secretary of the Uttarakhand Congress IT Cell, told The Tribune that besides Dehradun, IT cells had been set up in Haridwar, Tehri and Haldwani to connect with young voters through the use of the social media.

“We have created pages on facebook for all five Congress candidates contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Uttarakhand and the IT cell members are updating their pages regularly by posting pictures of their rallies and notifications of their events,” Maurya said.

The Congress IT Cell is running a facebook page “Lok Sabha Elections 2014: Vote for Congress Party” to spread a word about Rahul Gandhi among the young tech-savvy people. The party’s main aim is to connect with 80,000 young people before the state goes to polls on May 7. “We are also operating 12 groups on whatsapp called “UK PCC” to spread our message on mobile phones,” said Naveen Ramola, Garhwal in chagre of the Congress IT Cell.

The Congress isn't the only party trying to ride the digital wave ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the state. The BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Left parties are also using the social media to influence voters.

The BJP is also running an aggressive campaign on facebook and twitter in support of its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. It is operating a dedicated facebook page “uttarakhand.bjp”, besides five pages for five constituencies for the last couple of months. “We have divided the state in 22 districts for our administrative convenience and there is a convener for every district. The convener is responsible to gather information about the ongoing campaigning activities and share it with the IT cell, which in turn shares it on facebook and other social media platforms,” said, Rajeev Talwar, convener of the state BJP IT Cell.

He said as part of their social media campaign strategy the BJP was focusing on connecting with the voters in the 18 to 25 age group, as they are going to be the deciding factor in the elections this time. To make an impact on the minds of the young voters, the BJP IT Cell has been organising workshops for the members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidayarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Yuva Morcha who have a wider reach among the young people.

“We organised a massive drive through facebook for voter registration and we managed to get 600 to 700 new voters registered with the Election Commission,” Siddharth Rana, ABVP leader told The Tribune.

“We have also created whatsapp groups to keepg our supporters and members updated about the campaign activities and have better coordination among the party volunteers,” said one of the IT cell volunteer.

Besides the Congress and the BJP, the AAP is also using the social media platforms to engage with the voters and propagate its anti-corruption agenda in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand.

AAP leader Sanjay Bhatt said, “We have created whatsapp groups called ‘AAP Ki Kranti’ to convey our promises and election manifesto to the voters.”

It is worth recalling that the Aam Aadmi Party had used facebook and twitter in a big way to draw support of the people in the Delhi Assembly elections. Anoop Nautiyal, AAP candidate from Tehri Garhwal, is active on twitter and facebook and keeps updating his supporters about his daily canvassing and other activities. Similarly, Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattarcharya, former state DGP and AAP candidate from the Haridwar constituency, is also using the social media platforms to connect with her supporters.

The Student Federation India (SFI), a student outfit of the CPM, is also doing every bit to woo youths through the social media. Abhishek Bhandari, district head of the SFI, said, “The social media push can be an accelerator to get more support for the party’s campaign in the run up to the elections. We have made a special strategy this time to amplify our support base with the increasing use of the Internet.”

No more smooth sailing for BJP
A tough fight expected for the party on all five Lok Sabha seats
Neena Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 23
A month ago it seemed the Uttarakhand BJP will sail through without the Congress putting up a good fight in all five parliamentary seats in the elections on May 7 but suddenly the situation has begun to look tough for it.

BC Khanduri, BJP candidate from the Pauri Garhwal parliamentary seat, who was expecting an easy win, will now have to work for every vote as Congress candidate Harak Singh Rawat is expected to give him a good fight.

Rumblings in the BJP too have not died down. BJP leader Mohan Singh Gaonwasi is still angry with the party leadership and has so far not participated in the campaigning.

The BJP cannot afford to antagonise the Rajput community at this juncture. Though the BJP is trying to fill the vacuum by enlisting the services of Matbar Singh Kandari and Satpal Maharaj, these leaders may not be of much help as the public does not take kindly to turncoats,” said a party leader.

Similarly, the BJP can no longer expect a smooth sailing on the Tehri Garhwal seat too. “There are certain gaps that need to be addressed and I have already held meetings with booth-level party workers to ensure these issues do not crop up at the time of voting,” said Ram Lal, general secretary (Organization), BJP.

Though Pradeep Tamta and KC Baba, Congress candidates from Almora and Nainital, respectively, have to contend with the anti-incumbency factor, the BJP candidates from these seats are being forced to slug it out as Chief Minister Harish Rawat is holding frequent meetings here.

In Haridwar too, political analysts are expecting a tough fight between BJP candidate Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Congress candidate Renuka Rawat.

Helped by the RSS, the BJP has always been in an advantageous position as far as mobilisation at the grassroots level is concerned. It is this link in the chain that the BJP expects to come good when voters come out to vote.

Tough road ahead

BC Khanduri, BJP candidate from the Pauri Garhwal parliamentary seat, who was expecting an easy win, will now have to work for every vote as Congress candidate Harak Singh Rawat is expected to give him a good fight. Rumblings in the BJP too have not died down.

Bahuguna was removed for poor relief works: Maharaj
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 23
BJP leader Satpal Maharaj told mediapersons here today that the chief reason for former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna’s ouster was his failure to carry out systematic relief and rehabilitation works in the aftermath of last year’s natural disaster.

He added, “The Congress removed Vijay Bahuguna because of the tardy relief and rehabilitation works carried out in the state. His rejection by the Congress is proof enough that the relief and rehabilitation works were not satisfactory.” Maharaj also demanded that the Congress-led state government must present the account of money that was received in the form of donations for the disaster-affected victims.

“The government should give a full account of money disbursed to the people. There are several complaints that relief cheques were given to fake beneficiaries,” he said.

Maharaj, who recently left the Congress to join the BJP, rejected the claims of Chief Minister Harish Rawat that he had managed to achieve quite a lot in a short span of two months after assuming the office. “Harish Rawat has only been sitting idle and making tall claims,” he added.

Asked to comment on the reports that he was not feeling comfortable in the BJP, Maharaj said, “I am feeling quite secure.”

Maharaj also rejected Mohan Singh Gaonwasi's claims that his (Maharaj’s) entry into the BJP would not have any impact. “The BJP both at the Centre and in the state will benefit. I am already receiving invitations to address election rallies all across the state,” he said.

Maharaj also supported Narendra Modi, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, saying, “Hurdles should not be created in the way of Narendra Modi, who will soon occupy the highest chair of the country. Nobody should play the role of Kaikeyi and prevent the raj-tilak of Modi, which will soon become a reality.”

CPI (ML) seeks 3-day leave for labourers
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 23
The Communist Party of India (ML) has written to Chief Electoral Officer Radha Raturi to instruct industries and corporate houses to grant three-day paid leave to labourers so that they could cast their votes in the respective constituencies.

In a press note issued here, CPI (ML) state secretary KK Bora said they had urged the Chief Electoral Officer to ensure that the workers employed in the industrial areas were granted three days of paid leave.

A majority of the work force come from the hill areas of the state. They are registered in their respective constituencies and cannot vote at the workplace. "Although the Labour Department has announced a one-day leave, it is insufficient as travelling to the native place takes two days. We have requested the CEO to grant three days of leave to workers belonging to the far-flung areas,” said Bora.

He said if three days of leave was not possible, then workers should be given an option of casting their votes through postal ballots.

Youth Club members quiz BJP, Cong candidates
Our Correspondent

Pithoragarh, April 23
Ajay Tamta and Pradeep Tamta, candidates of the BJP and the Congress, respectively, from the Almora parliamentary constituency, expressed their views on the five main issues put forth by the Youth Club members at Didihat town in Pithoragarh district today.

The Youth Club members sought their views on five local issues—creation of a separate district of Didihat, water shortage in the town and adjoining areas, non-availability of technicians and doctors in various community and primary health centres in the Assembly segment, poor education facilities as posts of teacher had not been filled, and no development works in 23 villages in Didihat which were excluded from the Askot wildlife sanctuary area last year. “We asked these questions to the candidates of the BJP and the Congress. However, they could not satisfy our youths with their replies,” said Sanju Pant, president of the Youth Club, Didihat.

He said while Ajay Tamta promised to get Didihat the district status and blamed the Congress for not acting on the demand, Pradeep Tamta informed the gathering about the reorganisation commission constituted by the state government to establish small administrative units, including some districts and tehsils. "While Pradeep Tamta said a scheme was being implemented from Ramganga at Thal to solve the drinking water problem in the area, Ajay Tamta countered him saying the previous BJP government in the state had announced the scheme but the present Congress-led government had stopped allocation of budget for it,” said Pant.

On the non-availability of doctors in primary health centres in the Didihat area, Pradeep Tamta said the state government had proposed to recruit over 100 doctors soon and they would be deputed in remote areas like Didihat. The BJP candidate said in the name of improving medical services the state government had even transferred doctors who were working at hospitals in the remote areas.

Asked about developmental works in the villages excluded from the Askot musk deer sanctuary area, the Congress candidate said it was his biggest achievement as he wanted to ensure development of the area. Ajay Tamta said the exclusion of the villages, 23 out of which are in the Didihat Assembly segment, from the sanctuary area was of no use as they were not receiving any development funds from the state government.

“While Pradeep Tamta assured the Youth Club members of getting filled all vacant posts of schoolteacher in the Assembly seat, Ajay Tamta accused the present government of scrapping the plan formulated by the previous BJP government for filling posts of teacher in the state,” said Pant, organiser of the discussion.

Plain speak

The Didihat Youth Club members sought their views on five local issues—creation of a separate district of Didihat, water shortage in the town and adjoining areas, non-availability of technicians and doctors in various community and primary health centres in the Assembly segment, poor education facilities as posts of teacher have not been filled, and no development works in 23 villages in Didihat which were excluded from the Askot wildlife sanctuary area last year.

Addressing a gathering, he said the Congress was committed to the development of the region.

Bahuguna said he was indebted to the people of the region as they had always supported his family during the earlier elections in the state.

Manmohan Singh Mall, Mussoorie Municipal Council president, alleged that Mala Raj Lakshmi Shah, sitting MP from Tehri Garhwal, had done nothing for the people of the constituency and therefore people should vote for the Congress candidate.

Ramdev using yoga camps for BJP campaign: Harish Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, April 23
Yog guru swami Ramdev today came under fire from Chief Minister Harish Rawat owing to his repeated anti-Congress statements and indirect use of yoga camps for the BJP election campaign.

Harish Rawat, who represents the Haridwar parliamentary constituency, said in Haridwar today Ramdev was misusing yoga camps run under Patanjali Yogpeeth for propagating the BJP's election agenda.

Rawat said it appeared that the yoga guru was hell bent on promoting the BJP and Narendra Modi and had given up teaching healthy art of yoga.

"Swami Ramdev has lost his way. He doesn't see communal working of the BJP, the divisive seeds that the VHP, the RSS and the Bajrang Dal are sowing in the country. Even his close aide Acharya Balakrishan has been involved in many cases, but its the Congress that is the culprit in the eyes of the yog guru. Using the yoga platform to promote the BJP's election agenda is totally wrong and the Election Commission should intervene in the matter," said Rawat.

The Chief Minister criticised BJP candidate Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and asked him to give an explanation on the Mahakumbh budget irregularities and then question "my work during the past five years as the Haridwar parliamentarian".

Harish Rawat refuted charges that he was confined to campaigning for his wife Renuka Rawat in the Haridwar parliamentary constituency and said he just arrived from the Pauri Garhwal constituency after extensively campaigning for Congress candidate Harak Singh Rawat there.

"I am addressing party workers daily in at least two constituencies. Sometimes my morning begins in Haridwar, I spend afternoon in Pauri, evening in Tehri, take dinner at Almora and stay at night at Nainital," said a smiling Rawat.

Ambarish Kumar, campaign coordinator for Renuka Rawat, said Harish Rawat was making whirlwind tours of all five constituencies.

The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam assistant general manager (traffic) LM Sharma, speaking on the occasion said the town was largely dependent on tourism therefore the taxi drivers should greet tourists with a smile.

He also said these taxi drivers were brand ambassadors for the town and tourists would revisit the hill town, only if they behaved cordially.

He added tourists called a taxi, the moment they land in the state, and they should not go back with the feeling that they have been cheated by the taxi drivers.

Therefore it was important to greet tourists cordially and engage with them in polite manner. Sharma further said it was known that a pleased tourist always paid a handsome tip at the end of the journey.

He also said the taxi drivers should have numbers of all the concerned government officials so that they could be reached immediately during emergency.

Locals have welcomed this move initiated by the District Magistrate of Dehradun and were of the view that such workshops should be carried out for rickshaw-pullers and hotel guides in future. Regional tourism officer YS Gangwar and other officials were also present during the workshop.

Parwinder Sandhu
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 23
The anti-encroachment drive started by the district administration with a lot of enthusiasm has now lost steam. Uncertainty looms large over the re-launch of the drive.

A notification from the District Magistrate-cum-Mukhya Nagar Adhikari BVRC Purushottam states that the drive would be restarted at a later date as a large number of security personnel and officials were on duty for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

As the nomination process ended on April 17, it appears that the anti-encroachment drive will not begin immediately.

Purushottam said: “The entire nomination process got over today. We were waiting for the candidates to withdraw their names by April 23, the last day of the nomination process. Since the officials were busy with election duty, it was difficult to resume the drive after April 17. We are yet to decide when the drive will be re-launched.”

The administration had started the anti-encroachment drive to make footpaths in the city markets and other areas free from blockades.

Officials from the Dehradun Municipal Corporation, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority and the Public Works Department were part of the drive that was carried out for only four days. It was stopped in the wake of the nomination process for the general elections.

It may be recalled that Nainital High Court had ordered the removal of encroachments on a public interest litigation filed by a leader of the Uttarakhand Jan Mancha, Manmohan Singh Lakhera. In the PIL, Lakhera said: “Footpaths were created in the city to facilitate walking spaces for commuters. However, these have been encroached upon either by shopkeepers or hawkers and vendors. As a result, commuters have to walk on busy roads leading to accidents.”

Till date encroachments from the areas around the Clock Tower Chowk, Chakrata Road and parts of Rajpur Road had been removed. The High Court had also appointed Rajiv Sharma, president of the District Bar Association, as a court Commissioner to oversee removal of encroachments from footpath in the state capital file a report on the same. The report was to be submitted within eight weeks.
