Women empowerment, clean Ganga Kanchan Roy’s priority
Haridwar, April
16 Filing her nomination on Tuesday, Bhattacharya today made a whirlwind tour of several colonies of the city and urged party workers to spread her 18 point election agenda among all voters. Speaking to TNS at Devpura, the 1974 IPS batch, Bhattacharya said, “Haridwar and the holy Ganga are related with each other, but despite billions of rupees spent in name of cleaning Ganga nothing effective has been done since 1986 when Ganga Action Plan was initiated.” “We need to focus on cleaning and maintaining the purity of this holy river, which we consider equivalent to a mother. Just relying on government projects won’t do much as we all need to ensure that on personal level we don’t pollute the Ganga,” Bhattacharya added. Making it clear that despite being pitched against Chief Minister’s wife Renuka Rawat and former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, AAP’s Bhattacharya said she had no issues with the rival candidates as she just wanted to focus on ushering in development, solving local problems, combating corruption and providing women their rights and safety. Citing Maha Kumbh fair, Ardh Kumbh, Kanwar fair, Piran Kaliyar, Urs, and other annual religious festivities held in Haridwar on regular basis, Kanchan stressed on the need for a master plan for the city as well as permanent facilities and structures constructed for these fairs. Also special flood prevention measures need to be taken as a major portion of Haridwar, Lakshar, Khadar, Khanpur are flood prone. Meanwhile, AAP district coordinator JP Baduni said, a large number of people were joining the Aam Aadmi Party and with the clean, honest and intellectual image of its leaders, voter’s response was overwhelming. “We are connecting with the masses, rural area voters, minorities, dalits, women and the youth, all of whose response is in favour of giving AAP a chance as both the Congress and BJP have failed to provide a clean, vision-oriented governance,” said Baduni. |

Matbar Kandari, son rejoin BJP
Dehradun, April 16 A remorseful Kandari, said, "I made a mistake by joining the Congress, but I have learnt a lesson. In my heart and mind, I always thought of being part of the BJP family. Now I am back where
I belong." Kandari also vowed to work for the party candidates and also made a strong pitch for paving the entry of other BJP leaders, who were
either expelled or had joined different parties after being denied the BJP ticket, during the last assembly elections. While welcoming Kandari, BJP Chief
Teerath Singh Rawat said as the BJP was coming back to power under the leadership of Narinder Modi, there was clamour among leaders to join
the BJP. Significantly there were reports that an ex-chief minister was stalling the entry of
Kandari, who had already been given a green signal for his re-entry into the party fold by the high command in New Delhi. But, the state leadership finally resolved the matter. Further in the morning, several ex-servicemen were also conferred membership, at a function held at the BJP headquarter. Those who joined the BJP included Col
(retd) BS Khatri, Col (retd) Arun Kumar Sinha, Lt Col (retd) JS Basera, Major (retd) YP Thapa and
others. |

Voters ready to teach lesson to BJP, Cong, says BSP candidate
Mussoorie, April 16 Sheespal Singh Chaudhry said that Bahujan Samaj Party was fighting over the raging issues such as price rise, women's security, unemployment and better education, and was getting overwhelming response in all 14-Assembly segments of the state. He further said that the BSP would play an important role in the 16 Lok Sabha as the country was heading towards a hung Parliament. Sheespal said that the Congress and BJP were not interested in development even after the formation of the new state and were busy misleading people on petty issues such as changing the CMs etc. He also lamented the fact that the politicians of the state have shown that they were only interested towards their personal gains and not for the innocent people of the state. The unending struggle for the seat of chief minister in both parties has hampered the development of the state, which is trying to recover from scars of the natural disaster that occurred last year. Sheespal said that while travelling around the state he found that people have made their mind to oust both Congress and BJP and bring in BSP which had clean image in the state. “BSP, which was perceived to be the party of Dalits, has now gained acceptance among other caste and communities and was emerging as the party dedicated to all in the state and this would be confirmed with the victory of BSP candidates from most of the seats of Uttarakhand,''said Sheespal Singh Chaudhry. |

Residents unite to protect Doon’s aesthetic beauty
Dehradun, April 16 Sixty residential societies have gathered under the banner of Doon Residents’ Welfare Front (DRWF) to safeguard the aesthetic beauty and hygiene of the city, which suffers during every election. Addressing a press conference here today, Mahesh Bhandari, president of the DRWF, said, “Keeping the model code of conduct in mind, the front would like to assure the Election Commission that steps are being taken to prevent the city from being devastated by election posters, banners and other canvassing material.” “The political parties and all candidates should ensure that the city will not be plastered with posters and flags, no plastic or polythene made campaign material should be used and littering of campaign material should be prevented at any cost. Also, we would like the candidates contesting from the Tehri and Haridwar constituencies to make public their agenda for development in both the constituencies,” he added. “The front also requests that the parties and candidates should ensure that there will be no mudslinging, nor should religious remarks be passed and no personal attacks will be made on any person on the basis of caste or religion during the campaigning. We have formed a three-member committee in every society which would be monitoring the activities of the candidates in regard to the election campaign posters and other publicity material,” said RS Tomar, general secretary of the front. “On the recommendation of the monitoring committee an FIR would be registered against any person or political party found defacing public or private property,” he added. Tanda villagers to press NOTA button this Lok Sabha poll
Pithoragarh, April 16 “We are forced to tread 6 km from Khansyun to reach the village and that too in tough and rugged terrains. Despite several requests to the authorities concerned and agitations, no political party has done anything to address their grievances. In protest against this, we have decided to press the NOTA button in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections,” said Madan Paragai, a local resident. Residents complained that the village also lacked space for the construction of a junior high school building. After the school building was damaged in the disaster last year, junior classes had been shifted to the primary school building which was causing a lot of inconvenience. Even the midday meal was being prepared at a house, added Paragai. In Almora district, residents of Nali village had also decided to press the NOTA button. They also complained of lack of a road to their village. “Politicians who come here in helicopters to seek votes will never be able to understand what hardships we are facing. We have decided to press the NOTA button in the ensuing elections,” Bhagwan Singh Bhainsora, a local villager. |

AAP Haridwar candidate claims favourable wave
Haridwar, April 16 Kanchan said before she filed her nomination papers the turnout at her roadshow at Pt Gobind Ballabh Pant Park till Roshanabad was enough indication that there was an AAP wave in Haridwar and other parts of the country. Bhattacharya said though the Congress and the BJP had spent crores of rupees on image makeover and the election campaign blitzkrieg, the results on May 16 would be on the lines of the Delhi Assembly elections. “Everyone underestimated us during the Delhi Assembly elections but eventually people wanted change as they were perturbed by corruption, misgovernance and false manifestoes of the political parties. During my election campaign in Haridwar I have gauged the mood of the voters. They want change and the Aam Aadmi Party’s working, ideology and concern for local issues are attracting voters” she said. District coordinator of the party JP Baduni said more than 1,000 persons turned up at Pt Gobind Ballabh Pant Park before Kanchan filed her nomination papers. “Compare the public outpour at the roadshows of the AAP candidate with that at the functions of Chief Minister’s wife Renuka Rawat and BSP candidate Hazi Islam. One can notice that while the Congress was backed by the state machinery, the BSP candidate was supported by party activists mainly from Uttar Pradesh. But it was only our roadshow that witnessed participation by local voters and youths,” said Baduni. A large number of women turned up at Kanchan’s roadshow and extended support to her. Wearing AAP caps having Kezriwal photos, the party activists carrying brooms drew the attention of the people. However, there was no traffic jam during Kanchan’s roadshow as was witnessed during the Congress
roadshow. |
