Bal Niketan Shame
Finally, supervisor in police net

Chandigarh, April 23
Bal Niketan supervisor Manish Arora being taken to the GMSH, Sector 16, for a medical examination on Wednesday. After eluding the police for two days, Bal Niektan supervisor Manish Arora, accused of sexually harassing inmates of the home, finally landed in the police net today. Arora was arrested after he returned from leave at Bal Niketan and was taken to the Sector 11 police station. The police questioned him and recorded his statements. He will be produced in court tomorrow.

The UT Social Welfare Department today shifted all 13 complainants in the Sector 15 Bal Niketan sexual harassment case to Snehalaya for security reasons after directions from the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR).

DC orders FIR against Estate Office staff

Chandigarh, April 23
UT Deputy Commissioner-cum-Estate Officer has ordered the registration of an FIR against officials of the building branch of the UT Estate Office in connection with major building violations in certain properties in the city.

RLA to increase limit of tokens
Chandigarh, April 23
With a large number of visitors arriving at the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) office in Sector 17, the authorities have decided to increase the limit of tokens from the present 200 to cater to more number of visitors. These visitors stand in long queues for registration of vehicles, renewal of RC, duplicate RC, HSRP number plates and other services.

Cops, accident victim injured as PCR van overturns
Chandigarh, April 23
A police control room (PCR) vehicle returning from an accident spot turned turtle at the road dividing Sectors 16 and17 dividing near the traffic intersection this morning. Three Chandigarh police personnel were injured in the accident. The PCR vehicle was ferrying an accident victim to the PGI when the mishap occurred.

MC serves show-cause notice on Railways
Chandigarh, April 23
The Municipal Corporation (MC), Chandigarh, has served a show-cause notice to the Railways for failing to pay service charges of Rs 1.16 crore.The Railways has to pay the service charges for the complex at the railway station.

PU gives nod to semester system

In a good news for students, Panjab University has decided to adopt semester system for the under-graduate (UG) classes from the next academic session. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Arun Kumar.

Teachers’ body serves notices on PU VC, college principal

Four teachers of MCM DAV College for Women, including the president and secretary of the Teachers Union, today served a legal notice on Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover for violating the university regulations regarding the constitution of the college governing body.

Even as Chandigarh is known as an educational hub, more than 3,221 children in the age-group of 7-14 years have never attended school or are dropouts. These shocking statistics were revealed through a survey carried out by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). The survey was carried out to enrol such students under the ‘Access and retention of out-of-schoolchildren through special training scheme.’

Students of The Millennium School hold a voter awareness rally at Phase VII, Mohali, on Wednesday. More than 200 students of The Millennium School concluded their awareness campaign for voters, ‘Baad Mein Mat Bolna’ today. The students took out rallies in various parts of the town. PU mulls stream change in second semester

Chandigarh, April 23
On the lines of Punjab Engineering College — to allow engineering students to change their stream in the second semester — Panjab University authorities also drafted a similar proposal today. As per the proposal, students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 9 in the first year, will be allowed to change their stream if a vacant seat is available in another department.

A series of lectures on legal problems faced by the senior citizens in their day-to-day life was organised at the Divisional Library (south), Sector 34, today.

Annual day

Chandigarh: The students and teachers of Government High School, Sector 53, (Smart School), celebrated the school’s annual day today. A blood donation camp was organised in which 65 units of blood were collected. Kashish Mittal, IAS, was the chief guest. A colourful programme was presented by the students to mark the occasion. The highlight of the function was a dance performance by the tiny-tots of the primary wing.

Ghaggar river bed
Illegal quarrying goes on with impunity

Dera Bassi, April 23
The Ghaggar river bed on the banks of Bakarpur and Chhat villages in Dera Bassi. Despite a ban, quarrying is going on unchecked at the Ghaggar river bed right under the nose of authorities concerned for the past couple of months.
Taking the benefit of the unclear boundary of Bakarpur and Chhat villages at the Ghaggar river bed, a clan of politically well-connected persons is allegedly involved in illegal quarrying in connivance with the local police.

Just over a month after advocates enrolled with other state bar councils were disentitled to cast their votes in the Chandigarh District Bar Association elections, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today allowed 57 lawyers to exercise their right to vote on fulfilling other requirements.

Three get life imprisonment

Chandigarh, April 23
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today sentenced three youths to life imprisonment for stabbing to death a 24-year-old man outside the Sector 19 Government School in 2011. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each convict.

Man gets 5-yr jail for kidnapping minor
Chandigarh, April 23
A local court today sentenced a man to a five-year imprisonment after holding him guilty in a case of kidnapping a minor and causing harm to him.

Software engineer attacked in Mohali
Mohali, April 23 A software engineer sustained serious injuries after unidentified persons attacked him at Sector 69 here this morning. The victim, Abhilash Chopra (30), a resident of Sector 69, went to drop his son at Genius Public School in the same sector when four-five persons armed with rods and sticks attacked him.

Son of cop arrested for snatching
Chandigarh, April 23 The UT police have arrested two persons, who allegedly snatched the purse from a woman lecturer. One of the two accused was identified as the son of a serving Head Constable of the Chandigarh Traffic Police.

Four persons convicted of dacoity
Panchkula, April 23
A local court today convicted four persons, including a woman, and acquitted three others of dacoity. The dacoity took place at the residence of a businessman, last year.

Thieves strike at five houses in P’kula
Panchkula, April 23 Thieves struck at five houses in two different sectors last night. While four houses fell on the same road in Sector 6, one was in Sector 7. The thieves decamped with cash and jewellery amounting to Rs 10 lakh when they struck at the residence of a businessman in Sector 7 here.

Two die in road mishaps in Zirakpur
Zirakpur, April 23
Two persons, including a woman, died in separate accidents here. In the first incident, the victim, Manju from Gazipur village near here, was walking with her husband, Pritam, when she was hit by a motorcyclist.

One killed, 3 hurt as car overturns
Panchkula, April 23
A man died and his three friends were seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling in hit a tree and overturned near Mauli village last night.

All is well, says Chandigarh Hockey Academy
Chandigarh, April 23
Junior hockey players practise at the Hockey Stadium, Sector 18, in Chandigarh on Wednesday. The state-run Chandigarh Hockey Academy seems to be least bothered about the recent goof-ups made by the coaches and authorities of the state-run academy. The authorities believe all is well and there is no need to initiate any action in this regard. Till date, the competent authority has not questioned anyone or given any explanation related to the series of goof-ups that were published in these columns.
