Deepkamal Kaur/Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, March 22 Even as there were different names for which the draw was taken out, the drafts of all these seven zones were presented by the same person, indicating a direct link. These included AD Enterprises, which was declared winner for Jalandhar Cantonment, Wadala Chowk and Workshop Chowk, UW Enterprises for Industrial Area, Parvesh Kumar for Railway Station, Om Sons for Model Town and Bus Stand. Even in the rural segment, the same group got two more zones -AD Enterprises for Kala Bakra and Vijeta Beverages for Adda Kathar. While the applicants AD Enterprises, UW Enterprises and Parvesh Kumar were reportedly linked to the Majithia group, Om Sons and Vijeta Bewerages are allegedly owned by Deep Malhotra’s family. Excise officials, on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that both politicians had joined hands and formed a syndicate and put in over 400 applications by different names out of the 1,295 in the city alone to have a major hold in the liquor business. The group had reportedly invested Rs 3 crore as non-refundable application fee to earn a big buck in the entire next financial year. Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Khaira said it was Majithia’s elder brother Gurmehar Singh Majithia who had been controlling the entire liquor trade in Punjab from New Delhi. “While Malhotra does the business in the name of his son Gaurav Malhotra, Majithia has a benami control over the Excise and Taxation Department, which is quite clear. The Majithia group operates in Punjab from a residential accommodation in Mohali. They had already taken over the control of business in Nawanshahr and Gurdaspur and this time are learnt to have made inroads into Jalandhar and more areas of Punjab,” he said. There were other groups, too, who had tried their luck by putting in a large number of applications. A group from Fazilka, Doda group, too had put in over 200 applications by different names. The group got the Lamma Pind zone by the name Joginder Pal Doda. The same group won two zones in rural areas - Arushi Doda for Jandiala and Doda Wines in Shahkot. A third group won four zones in Jalandhar rural by the names Rajwinder Singh in Phillaur, Santokh Singh in Nakodar-II, Surinder Singh Adampur and Pritam Singh from Lohian. Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner Sarojini Gautam Sharda confirmed that the groups had done pooling at their own level. She added that the department had earned Rs 322 crore by way of allotment fee and Rs 12 crore as application fee in Jalandhar alone. |

The Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station needs immediate attention from the Ministry of Railways. Being a junction, trains divert to Pathankot, Jammu, Udampur and Hoshiarpur. The passengers going to west, north, east and south, board the train from here. As most of the trains have passenger coaches (16 to 23), the size of the Platform has been increased to accommodate the passenger coaches so that the passengers can board the train easily, but the length of the shed over the Platform No. 1, 2, 3 needs immediate attention as summers are approaching. Similarly, the Railway Department should construct a wall near the tracks of Platform No. 2/3, keeping in view the safety and security of the passengers. The Railway authorities should review of making a Bathroom on both sides of the Platform No. 2/3 as the passengers have to face lot of difficulties. Rajat Kumar
Mohindru, Jalandhar
