allotment of Liquor vends
Revenue from liquor up by 27%
Ludhiana, March 22
The district is likely to generate a whopping revenue of about Rs 710 crore from the draw of liquor vends —held by the Excise Department at Harsheela Resorts - — here today. A rise of nearly 27 per cent in revenue has been registered as against last year, when the total collection through the draw of liquor vends was about Rs 556 crore.

Harassed by caller, girl consumes toilet cleaner
Ludhiana, March 22
Distraught over an unidentified caller harassing her over the past few days, an 18-year-old girl from Satguru Nagar consumed a toilet cleaner here on March 20. The Daba police station registered a case in this regard today. The police said Kusum (name changed) had been regularly receiving messages and calls from an unidentified caller, who allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she did not meet him.

Poll code: Education dept stops distribution of books

In the wake of the ongoing model code of conduct, the Education Department has passed directions not to distribute free of cost books to students under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. The move is bound to affect as many as 2.13 lakh students in the district.

Fair: A treat for handicraft lovers

Fabrics from across the country were exhibited at the All-Indian Handicraft Fair that commenced at Kumra Palace today. Fabrics and handicraft products from Jammu and Kashmir, HP, UP, MP, Assam, Uttarakhand and Odisha were also exhibited at the expo organised by SS Memorial Educational Society under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles.

Ludhiana: Students of Ram Lal Bhasin Public School celebrated World Water Day with great enthusiasm. The day was observed to raise awareness on the misuse of water. In the morning assembly, students of senior wing highlighted the problem of misuse of water in urban areas that was affected the rural masses. Students also expressed their ideas through posters.

Youth arrested with 20-gm smack
Samrala, March 22
The Samrala police claimed to have arrested a youth and recovered 20 gm of smack from his possession. The arrested youth was identified as Tejinder Singh (27), a resident of Balala village. As per Samrala SHO Pawanjit, a police party led by ASI Sham Lal of Samrala police was patrolling in the area.
