Poll fever grips city
Rachna Khaira Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, March 19 "During elections, mudslinging and electioneering becomes a regular event with the pot calling the kettle black. Instead of what the political parties say about each other or about themselves, I am checking on their performance by reading on the internet. I think, more than the candidate, it is the political party that matters the most as in India, the candidate is nothing more than a dummy in the hands of the party high command," said Ashutosh Lamba, an entrepreneur. He said apart from reading the manifestos of the last elections, he was also assessing the promises fulfilled by various parties in the last five years. Under the public awareness campaign, ‘Vote Banao, Vote Pao’ being run by the district administration for the last few days, many people are still registering themselves for the votes. Around 15,13,668 have been registered so far in the district for the coming Lok Sabha elections to be held on April 30 in the state in which almost 2 lakh would be voting for the first time. With ‘Wake Up Jalandhar Campaign’ being run in various colleges simultaneously, many youths are also coming forward and showing their interest in one of the biggest democratic exercise. "The most important thing we have done so far is to register ourselves for the vote. In college, we hold departmental debates, discussions on social networking websites, share political cartoons and even plan to produce a 'nukkar natak' on elections for our college fest," said Sunny, a student. Along with others, women are also getting into the election fervour that goes beyond home affairs, domestic politics and gender-based violence. "Even women you call ‘just housewives’ have areas of policy interest. These women who ‘don't work’ have to contend with the vagaries of power and water supply. Many are financial alchemists, taking a fixed wage and turning it into an elastic resource. They are savings and investment experts, using a range of methods to put away a little money and multiply a small amount through informal schemes and make strategic investments in ways they can. They also have opinion that needs to be heard and dealt with," said Gurjeet Sahota, a housewife from Jawahar Nagar. With voters having different parameters to assess and choose the candidates, one can definitely expect that the coming Lok Sabha elections may bring some unexpected results not only for the political parties but for the voters as well. |
AAP workers pay floral tributes to pothole
Jalandhar, March 19 Filling up the pothole with mud collected with their own party funds, they took a dig at the condition of the roads in the city and in jest, garnered support for their own party. The workers paid floral tributes to the pothole to paid homage to it on its first anniversary. They then filled it up with a bucket of mud tidying it over with a broom and a spade. Speaking on the occasion, the activists said the state government has not paid any attention to the roads in the city and now when the code of conduct has been implemented, a number of residents are a harried lot because the roads in their respective areas are in a deplorable condition. About 20 to 30 activists of the party gathered on the occasion. |
21 companies of BSF deployed on election duty
Jalandhar, March 19 Sources said to work out a strategy for the same, IG of the Punjab Frontier Ajay Kumar Tomar held a meeting of the DIGs and Commandants of various units falling in the region recently. The IG told The Tribune that though there would be a shortfall of personnel at the borders, he would not let it affect the security at the border areas. To ensure that the border defence remains strong and to keep the morale of the deployed jawans up, the IG has told the senior BSF officials to spend the maximum time in the border areas. "All DIGs and commandants will also remain posted at borders to thwart any attempt by the smugglers. I will myself go and keep a watch at different stretches along the Indo-Pak borders," said Tomar. The force also intends to increase the duty hours of the jawans at the borders. "With limited force left to guard the border areas, there will definitely be more pressure and strain on the existing available forces. We will definitely have to increase their duty hours," said Tomar. "We will also suspend sports activities and other training activities till the elections are over to make the maximum utilisation of the forces in the front and to keep an effective vigil at Punjab borders,” he said. Sources said presently 13 battalions are guarding the border areas. One battalion has seven companies. Now, sending 21 companies (each with 104 jawans) for election purpose will lessen the deployment of jawans at borders by around 2,100 jawans. Sources revealed that the BSF New Raising Battalion is also being sent for the elections. A BSF official said, "We have already started pulling up our socks for the same as we cannot leave the borders vulnerable under such circumstances. Our borders are very much prone to drug smugglers". A check on cross-border drug flow is also a challenge for the force which has seized 138 kg of heroin just in two months. Considering the fact that the total recovery of heroin last year was 322 kg, the seizure in the past two months has been quite high. Tomar, while appreciating the BSF jawans for their dedication at the Line of Control, said the BSF always remains ready to meet new challenges. Be it Uttrakhand disaster, Naxal affected areas or any other natural calamities in the country, the BSF has always played a pivotal role in giving its best. Notably, Punjab borders have registered a huge inflow of drug smuggling in the last two months. Last year, the BSF seized 322 kg of heroin. 138 kg has already been recovered in the last two months. Four lakh fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), ten pistols, 14 magazines, eight Pak mobiles and nine Pak SIM cards have also been recovered this year. BSF jawans have also interdicted two Pak smugglers and three Pak intruders, respectively this year. Fact file

PAP Chowk-Rama Mandi stretch cries for attention
Jalandhar, March 19 While the area had gathered notoriety after the traffic police issued a vocal protest that the road was causing traffic bottlenecks, an initial drive to fill up the potholes (with mud) waned after some time and it’s now back to big potholes and hour- long traffic jams. The residents living towards the Chugitti to GND varsity, Regional Campus and Laddhewali stretch are twice bitten because on the one hand they have to brave traffic snarls first on the PAP Chowk stretch and on the other, they also face road trouble on the way home towards Laddhewali. Speaking to The Tribune, resident Devraj Sharma said, “One to two hour wait in traffic is normal for us every day. Despite troubles and complaints, the complaints have gone unheard. There have been times when people have been stuck for three to four hours in traffic. While some months ago, the potholes were filled with mud, the problem is that during the dry season the mud soils people’s clothes and vehicles and renders the road worse. During the rain, it causes slush and jams. In both the cases, the mud wears away within days leaving people to deal with the gaping potholes. This problem has persisted for ages and now the election code of conduct is going to make worse.” Jatinder Thakur a commuter who resides near Laddhewali, says, “First I see traffic on the BSF Chowk to PAP stretch, then on the road to Laddhewali from Chugitti. While recently no work has been started on the PAP Chowk area, in our area work was started recently and it has in fact been left midway. This work can at least be completed. Shockers in our cars and vehicles don’t last for more than two months. Our lives have been rendered difficult.” While there is little hope for the PAP stretch before the code of conduct is removed, the residents and commuters meanwhile grapple with hours of traffic jams, accidents and vehicles owing out to bad roads. |

Few takers for fancy numbers
Jalandhar, March 19 Since the rules of the auction allowed the applicants to go in for multiple vanity numbers with only the entry fee for as many numbers getting forfeited, many of them have managed to win several numbers. In the event of any of the winning applicants not paying up the amount in a week’s time, the department will invite the second highest bidder to take the number. The department had held auction for PB-08-CJ series for which the numbers 0001, 0004, 0005 and 0006 have gone to the same bidder – Kanwar Charanjit Singh. The number 0001 has gone for Rs 5.11 lakh, which is Rs 11,000 above the reserve price of Rs 5 lakh. The other three numbers have gone on reserve price of Rs 2.5 lakh, perhaps implying that there were no competitors for the rest of the numbers in the series. The department staff said that the actual response would be known only after the bidders paid up. They said that they only got the email ID and telephone number of the bidder. “In the old pattern, we even took the residence proof of the applicant and checked that he was a local resident. The new pattern has no such condition imposed on the applicants, who simply have to give their mobile phone number and e-mail ID,” he said.
Angad Makkar, another applicant, has been declared the successful bidder for 10 numbers. He said, “I am still to choose one out of these numbers. Since the bidding closed on March 16, I have to make the payment till March 23. I had carefully read the rules of
the online bidding. Only my entry fee will be forfeited but I have a wide choice.”
DTO Jaswant Singh Dhillon was not available for comments. |

Truck union threatens to boycott wheat lifting tender
Jalandhar, March 19 The transporters were agitating against the recent hike in the security money for various tenders announced by the state government. They have even threatened to hold a state-level strike and block the entire GT road passing through the state. "Earlier, the government used to charge us Rs 10,000 as security money for a single tender for one or more locations. Now, the government, while increasing the security deposit to Rs 20,000, has also specified only a single location for each tender. This has increased our expenditure manifold. Since most of the transporters are have only a single vehicle, it has become very difficult for them to survive," said Happy Sandhu, president of the union. He has also accused of the government for not refunding the security money from the last five years. "Although, the government had taken refundable security deposit with each tender application, it has not refunded the amount from the last five years. The government is yet to pay around 30 lakhs to our union members," said Sandhu. |
