Tickets to ‘VIPs’ irk AAP volunteers
New Delhi, February 22 They expressed their anger and said the views of the locals have not been sought in choosing the candidate for the Lok Sabha polls and the very basic objective of involving people through mohalla sabhas has failed in the course. Primary members Mehfooz Alam, Deepak, Arvind Khatri and Sandeep today began an indefinite fast outside the Hanuman Road party office here. "AAP should stop this practice of choosing VIPs over common people in nominations. In the area there have been over 150 applications then why a sitting MLA should be given the ticket. There are other people too who are honest and have done a lot for the area," said Alam. "Our views were not taken while choosing the candidates. There have been no local level meetings in this regard," said Sikandar Pradhan and Mohd. Azharuddin, who were part of the protesters representing various assembly seats of the parliamentary constituency such as Bawana, Badli, Rithala, Narela Rohini and Kiradi. "The party is deviating from its basic principles. Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal had said the party would not give Lok Sabha tickets to its MLAs and now it is planning to give a ticket to Rakhi Birla," said Suresh Kumar, a party activist from Kiradi. According to a resident of Bawana JJ colony, Jaikapish Thakur, people in the area are gradually getting disenchanted with the greenhorns. "We have been volunteering for the party and will be able to tell who among the applicants is better but the party kept us out of it," noted Sandeep Hooda of Bawana. On the other hand, the party senior leaders denied Birla being the AAP candidate for the north-west Lok Sabha seat while on taking locals' views, the leaders said it is not possible this time due to time constraint. |
AAP decries rollback of
power bill relief
New Delhi, February 22 Condemning the move, senior party leaders said while the Congress is peeved with its drubbing in Delhi and that too at the hands of a one year-old party, the BJP is party to this anti-people decision at a time when it had assured the people of Delhi 30 per cent cut in the electricity bills in its manifesto for the assembly elections. "The Centre reversed the pro-people's measure and the BJP leaders did not oppose it in Parliament. Besides, opposing the CAG audit of private power discoms has only led to burdening people with high tariffs. This shows that both the Congress and BJP are hand in glove," said former cabinet minister of the AAP government Manish Sisodia. The reaction comes a day after Parliament cleared the interim budget for Delhi according to which the subsidy provided by the AAP government, will be discontinued from the next financial year. In the matter, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had proposed continuing the 50 per cent power tariff for consumption up to 400 units-one of the first steps that the AAP government took in December after coming to power-till September. "The Congress is yet to overcome the shock of its defeat in Delhi and the BJP is an equal partner in this anti-people decision," he said. The government chose to ignore, he added at a time when more than 90 per cent of the MLAs in the existing Delhi Assembly, except for the eight Congress MLAs, were in favour of reducing electricity bills by at least 30 per cent. |
BJP to make rates of
essential items reasonable: Vardhan
New Delhi, February 22 Condemning the burden of threefold hike in power tariff for the power consumers of Delhi, BJP Delhi Pradesh president Dr Harsh Vardhan said that AAP has betrayed the people of Delhi. After coming to power at Centre and Delhi, the BJP will make the rates of essential services and commodities reasonable, he said. "The lies of Arvind Kejriwal are being exposed. Despite objections from various departments and without getting approval of the Central government, the AAP made announcement of 50 per cent reduction in power tariff. The promise made in its manifesto is not fulfilled," Vardhan said. Stating that the AAP government's announcement was hasty when it gave a subsidy of Rs 372 crore per month to the power companies, he said, "The power consumers will have to pay at the rate Rs 7 per unit from April. One third of their income will be spent on paying the water and power bills." The AAP had initiated a movement in Delhi against power companies from October 2012 to April 2013. |
