Girl dies of typhoid in P’kula
Panchkula, February 22
An eleven-year-old girl reportedly died and over 20 residents of a society in Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, were taken ill after a typhoid outbreak in the area.

PU to suspend courses in Hindi, Punjabi journalism

From the next session, Panjab University will not offer journalism courses in Hindi and Punjabi language. It has also decided to suspend M.phil course in geography. The decision to suspend the courses in both the language was taken at a Syndicate meeting today and a review committee was constituted to decide the future of these courses.

Girl ends life in Sec 44
Chandigarh, February 22
A 22-year-old pharmaceutical student residing as a paying guest (PG) in Sector 44 committed suicide by hanging herself in her room, here today.

PU to hike fees from this session
Chandigarh, February 22
The Syndicate chaired by the Vice- chancellor, Arun Kumar Grover, today approved the hike in tuition and examination fees along with the hostel fee for the 2014-15 session. For the final approval, it will be tabled in the Senate meeting scheduled to be held next month.

Dy CM launches web portal, claims state to go paperless by year-end

Local contender Parasdeep Virk registered victory in a well settled match against Vikrak Srinivas, in the first round match of ITF Men’s Futures Tennis Tournament, at CLTA tennis courts, Sector 10, here today. Parasdeep Virk bt. Vikram Srinivas 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3. In other matches, Rutget Cramer of Netherlands defeated Rahul Sadhwani, 6-7 (20), 6-3 whereas Shahbaaz Khan beat Ajay Yadav 3-6, 6-3 and 7-6. Wild card entry for main draw was given to Sanam Singh (India); Anvit Bendre (India); Ranjeet Singh (India) and Vikrant Dahiya (India).

Badminton tourney begins today

The 23rd Smt. Krishna Khaitan Memorial All India Junior Ranking Prize Money Badminton Championship will commence at badminton-hall of Panjab University, tomorrow. The qualifying rounds of the championship will be played from Sunday and Monday whereas the main round matches will be played from February 25 to 28. The winners will be awarded with total cash prizes of Rs 3 lakh.
