Ensure implementation of free water scheme, LG tells DJB
New Delhi, February 19 Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced free water up to 600 litre per month to Delhi residents. "The DJB was asked to plan for its effective implementation in metered areas by ensuring that meters remain functional and error free so that the benefit of the scheme reaches to intended beneficiaries and is not misused by unscrupulous elements," said a senior Delhi government official. In a review meeting with DJB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Secretary S.K. Srivastava, Jung ordered them to prepare the summer action plan within two weeks. Detailed presentation on various issues and problems faced by the DJB was made by its CEO. He asked the officials to devise efficient ways and means to ensure that there is no scarcity of water during the summer. Jung expressed desire to take up the issue of early completion of Munak canal with the Union government on priority basis so that the plants at Dwarka, Bawana and Okhla get commissioned timely and ensuring adequate supply in these areas. Jung also took note of the vacancies of junior engineer and assistant engineer, especially at the field level, and asked the CEO to take it up with DSSSB to ensure that these vacancies are filed at the earliest. In another meeting with the local task force for ensuring smooth flow of traffic in Delhi, Jung directed all the officers concerned to conduct joint survey of all accident-prone areas and rectify the shortcomings within two weeks. JNU teachers back DUTA's issues
New Delhi, February 19 "We the teachers of JNU have been witnessing attacks on the autonomy of the teachers of Delhi University in the past few years through several steps. Major changes in the undergraduate programme of Delhi University have been brought about by undermining the democratic bodies of university and ignoring the majority opinion of the teachers and students," said memebrs the JNUTA. In this, the fact that the majority opinion has been against these changes was demonstrated by the recent victory of those who have been opposed to these changes in both the students' and the teachers' elections. "We would like to reiterate that in a university, `Dissent is the essence' which ought to be encouraged and not suppressed by the authorities. We believe that in a university a consensus has to be arrived at on all major issues through discussion and persuasion. This may be time consuming but in the end it leads to well considered decisions that stand the test of time," said the association in a letter of support. "We believe that the hastily introduced semester system and the FYUP are not serving the best interest of Delhi University and need to be reviewed immediately," said the JNUTA. Further, they said those teachers who had opposed the FYUP are now being victimised in promotions and appointments. "This is an attack on the autonomy of academics. The democratic functioning of the academic bodies of Delhi University needs to be immediately restored," they asserted. Demanding a review of the FYUP, JNUTA president Arun Kumar appealed the entire academic community of the country to support the struggle of DUTA on the above mentioned issues. |

Vardhan new Delhi BJP chief
New Delhi, February 19 Dr Vardhan, a four-time MLA from Krishna Nagar, has replaced Vijay Goel who has been elected Rajya Sabha member from Rajashthan. He resigned today. Goel, who is considered close to Singh, was given the charge of Delhi BJP on February 15, 2013. He has the shortest term as president of the state unit. His one-year term was very controversial. During the assembly election he had posed himself as chief ministerial candidate but party high command had refused to accept this due to opposition from many senior leaders in the capital. When instead of Goel, party had declared Dr Vardhan's name as the chief ministerial candidate, he had threatened to resign. However, he was pacified with an indication of Rajya Sabha membership.
