UJVNL director Mishra shown the door
Dehradun, January 4 It was all of a sudden that the letter of termination reached the office. Mishra, who was always stuck in the vortex of controversies, did not respond to phone calls made to him in this regard, nor he came to office today. It is he who was considered closer to a former Chairman, UJVNL, Yogender Prasad Narayan, against whom an inquiry was also set up for unduly favouring some firms in allocating works and receiving huge kickbacks in return. Narayan had promoted Mishra who had joined the UJVNL on the post of Executive Director, Civil, in February 2007, to Director Operation, out of turn. Some also blamed him for allegedly back-stabbing Narayan and getting him removed and implicated him in the inquiry. Mishra was also in the team that evaluated the 56 hydro-power projects the distribution of which came under scanner during the BJP-led state government. Principle Secretary SS Sandhu, however, maintained that Mishra’s tenure was over, so he was removed. But when he was asked that if this was the reason, then he should have been replaced in February 2011, at this Sandhu said there were a few things which could not be deciphered in this matter. His assertion clearly indicated that all was not going well in the UJVNL, especially with regard to Mishra. It is also seen that last year, when an advertisement was published in newspapers for the posts of director at various level in the UJVNL, then the post of Director, Operations, was not included in the ad. It also raises another question mark on this issue, as to why Mishra was given a long rope. |

Gaddi Khana to have dog shelter, clinic
Mussoorie, January 4 Municipal Council president OP Uniyal discussed with the PFA members the ways to reduce the stray dog menace. More than 350 cases of dog bites were been reported in 2012. The Municipal Council had provided the land to the PFA members near the IDH building on the Tehri bypass road in the past for animal shelter, but as the land was lying unused, the MC decided to transfer the land for the solid waste management resulting in the PFA and Municipal Council blaming each other for the delay. Uniyal summoned MC officials and PFA members to remove the bottleneck today and it was decided that the animal shelter would be provided to the PFA members at Gaddi Khana. Executive officer PS Rawat also informed the members that all equipment required to run the shelter had been bought by the MC and requested the PFA members to begin the project at the assigned place on priority basis. The health officer, Dr RK Singh, also informed the members present on the occasion that the veterinary doctor at the hospital in Mussoorie had been provided the necessary training required to treat the stray dogs with the help of PFA members and once the shelter work was started at the designated site, the cases of dog bites would be reduced to a large extent. Yash Gupta, a PFA member, said the team from the MC and PFA would visit the assigned site on Monday and once convinced, would begin the operation to catch dogs and treat them accordingly thereafter. "The shelter will also have adequate veterinary assistance. Dogs in such shelters will also be part of the animal birth control (ABC) programme and civic body, in association with PFA, will also encourage the adoption of such dogs,” added Yash. He also said the adoption programme would also solve the problem of putting all stray dogs in one place. Uniyal also said once the project gets going, the MC would provide additional funds in order to reduce the cases of dog bites in the town. He said construction of a cattle shelter was also proposed in the town. According to Dr VK Uniyal, chief medical superintendent of St Mary’s Hospital, they have received around 350 cases of dog bites in 2012 and 1,432 doses of rabies vaccine had been administered till December 31. “Our half of the budget goes into buying vaccine for animal bite cases and if a dog shelter comes up, there would be a decrease in such cases which would help in the reduction of rabies cases and the hospital would be able to focus on buying medicines for other diseases,” said the chief medical superintendent. The animal lovers have welcomed the move but are keeping their fingers crossed till the time the project finally takes off. |
14 bikes recovered from two persons
Dehradun January 4
The accused were arrested with three bikes and on subsequent information provided by them, the teams later recovered 11 motorcycles hidden in Bhagat Singh Colony and jungles near to the colony. Another accused, Devender alias Chotu, however, managed to run away. Director General of Police, Satyavrat Bansal has given a reward of Rs 20,000 to the teams. SSP Kewal Khurana said the motorcycles were stolen from various locations in the city included Paltan Bazar. He said the accused used to carry two-three master keys and would steal the bike from the crowded places by opening the locks. Their modus operandi was to hide the bike at safe locations in jungles and later sell it to the buyers after changing the number plates and preparing the fake documents. The job of fiddling with number plates and documents was done by Narpal who earlier worked as a conductor in a bus. Naushad earlier used to do whitewash and later took up the job of working for passenger taxis, that is how he came in contact with Narpal. It is he who lured Narpal into bike stealing by gifting him with a stolen bike. Naushad had been sent to jail in the past too under cases registered in Dalanwala and Nazibabad police stations for picking pockets. The accused used to sell these bikes at cheap prices of Rs 5,000. |
Mussoorie MC gets special garbage disposal vehicle
Mussoorie, January 4
The Bob Cat Vehicle has been retrofitted with around 150 additional components such as a vacuum cleaner, a suction machine and a sprinkler to keep the town free from dust, besides lifting garbage from bins. It will also ease pressure on the council which has been facing a shortage of sanitation workers in the town. Health Officer Dr RK Singh told The Tribune that the vehicle purchased for around Rs 14 lakh would speed up garbage disposal from designated points in the town. Additional components would be fitted on it later to ensure clean and hygienic roads in the town. The vehicle would also come handy during disasters and help in clearing mud debris during the monsoon. He said though it was small in size, it was a powerful machine that could be used for multiple purposes. Meanwhile, residents of the town have welcomed the move but they are skeptical that the vehicle might become another white elephant lying idle on the council premises. |
Accused have right to defend: OP Saklani
Dehradun, January 4 Accused had all the right to fight for justice, he said. Chairman, Uttarakhand Bar Council, Prithviraj Singh Chauhan, said some people with vested interests were deliberately fanning the rumours not to contest the case on the behalf of the accused so that the case gets transferred to some other city. This is what they did not want to happen. Chairman, Uttarakhand Bar Association, Surinder Pundir, thanked media for giving adequate attention and space to the case, which was why it could be transferred from the city police to the CBI. Pushpa Saklani was murdered by six men, the motive of which was said to be theft. Only Rs 600 were found stolen. She was brutally killed with her throat slit using kitchen knife after badly beaten by the accused. Her servant was also severely beating. Sixth accused Billa is still at large in the case. Unsatisfied with the police’s version of the theft of petty sum for being the reason behind the murder, Prithviraj Singh Chauhan moved the high court to make plea to refer the case to the CBI which the high court decreed in his favour yesterday. |
2 held for rape, murder of villager
Dehradun, January 4 Munna Devi was raped and murdered by the duo on December 29 last year. Bhura earns his livelihood by running a bullock cart for quarrying purposes while Mehtab works as a conductor in local buses. DGP Satyavrat Bansal had termed the case as a challenge for the police. It was revealed during the course of investigation that the accused knew Munna Devi quite well and often used to visit her. On the fateful day, they consumed liquor around 1.30 pm and went to the jungle in the vicinity where she had gone to collect firewood. In an inebriated condition, they overpowered the woman and raped her and inflicted deep bite marks on her face. When the old woman screamed, Bhura strangulated her. The police has recovered the earrings of the victim from the accused. The duo has admitted that they followed the woman with an intention to rape her but killed her when she raised the alarm. The DGP and the District Magistrate, Dehradun, BVRC Purushottam, have announced a reward of Rs 10,000 each to the police team. and also Rs 2.5 lakh to the victim’s family. The police team comprised of SP, Rural, GC Dhyani, Circle Officer, Vikasnagar, Jagdish Chand, two inspectors, four police station officers, 10 sub-inspectors and 30 constables who had been pursuing the case vigorously for the last four days. She did not get along well with any of her eight children, one of whom also lived in the village. Her husband, Tula Ram, was a labourer and had died 15 years ago. The SSP told mediapersons that the police got important clues from the spot of the incident which included a torn pocket of a shirt.
