Women not safe in Haridwar, too
Haridwar, December 24 With a week to go for the completion of this year, a whopping 40 cases of rape have been registered so far in Haridwar, which surely set the alarm bells ringing. If in a place where religious-spiritual aspect is quite high, women are being raped, then one can imagine the condition of other major cities or semi-urban towns. Taking into consideration the three-year rape data provided by Haridwar district police, cases of rape are on the rise. In 2010 the total number of rape cases registered in Haridwar district was 19, which increased to 22 in the year 2011. On this Senior Superintendent of Haridwar Police said that the police was looking into this aspect with sincerity and deep concern. Night patrolling, presence of women cops at police stations and Women Helpline are provided round the clock. Police officials point that in Haridwar city such instances are rare, with most of such cases occurring in villages or places bordering Uttar Pradesh, where the crime graph was quite high. Varsha Dhanik, girl students' union chief of the local Shravan Nath Math Jawaharlal Nehru College, who led a protest march taken out by girls, demanding justice for the Delhi rape victim, stated that the city police needed to be serious on the issue of eve-teasing in public places, buses or bazaars. “After 7 pm roaming in Haridwar is not safe, with multiple incidents of eve-teasing, chain-snatching and molestation being reported. As a resident I want comfort and assurance which the police has failed to provide fully,” said Prerna Kainthola, another student. |
