Many areas sans power
City goes dark and shivers as geyser, other electric appliances fail

New Delhi, January 4
An acute shortage of coal for the power plants supplying electricity to the city has led to severe loadshedding in the Capital, said senior discom officials.

The officials said that the discoms had arranged sufficient power for the winter months but due to unforeseen conditions, parts of Delhi have been facing intermittent shedding for the last few days. Many areas go dark as a result.

This has happened as Delhi is getting less power from several plants, including Dadri. “With the dense fog forcing cancellation and rescheduling of goods trains, as reported by some generators, there has been a coal shortage at Dadri plants, resulting in a reduction of 300-500 MW of power to Delhi,” said a senior discom official.

Areas in south and east Delhi were worst hit. “It was so cold and there had been no electricity for two hours in the morning. We could not use geyser and other electric appliances,” said Garima Sharma, a resident of Mayur Vihar Phase I.

There has been a reduction of around 200 MW power to Delhi from units 7 and 8 of Chandrapura since last week due to congestion in the transmission corridor. Besides, Mejia Thermal Power Station Unit 7 is generating 500 MW less power (of which 320 MW is supplied to Delhi) from this afternoon.

The officials said that they are forced to carry out rotational loadshedding to restrict overdrawing from the Northern Grid so as not to breach the grid code.

A Met official said that minimum temperature plummeted to 2.7 degree Celsius, four degrees below normal and down from yesterday’s 4.4 degrees, in the early hours, forcing people to pull out more woollens from their winter wardrobe.
However, as the day progressed there was slight improvement in weather conditions with morning fog giving way to a largely clear sky.

The maximum was recorded five degrees below normal at 15.7, which bettered previous day’s temperature by three degrees, the official said.

He said that humidity oscillated between 45 and 100 per cent.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature had dipped to four degree Celsius, the previous lowest for the season and the next day, the city witnessed the coldest day in 44 years when maximum plummeted to 9.8 degree. The morning fog, meanwhile, affected the rail and air traffic with schedule of around 30 flights being disrupted at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Around 100 flights were delayed while one was cancelled and three international flights were diverted to other airports. The weather department has predicted mainly clear sky with fog or mist in the morning for tomorrow.

Son held for kidnap drama
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 4
A 19-year-old boy who tried to extort money from his father by allegedly staging his own kidnapping was detained by the Delhi police on Thursday.

The police said that Saurabh Mandal, student of Class XII of Maharaja Agrasen Public School and resident of Narela in outer Delhi, was detained from Old Delhi railway station. Investigations have revealed that Saurabh, who was weak in his studies, was also unhappy with his parents for not getting enough pocket money. So he made the conspiracy, said police officials.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) B S Jaiswal, Saurabh’s father Ranjeet Mandal informed the police on December 21 that his son had not returned home from school. After checking with the school and his son’s friends, he was unable to find him.

“The police registered a case of missing at Narela police station and started looking for the child. While investigators and Ranjeet were looking for him, they received a ransom call, demanding Rs 3 crore for his release on December 23. The police registered a case under Section 365 (Kidnapping) and 364A (Kidnapping for ransom) of Indian Penal Code,” said Jaiswal.

The investigators started looking for Saurabh and through technical surveillance, they found that he was somewhere in Kolkata, West Bengal. A police team went to Kolkata. However, it could not locate Saurabh.

He was found loitering around Old Delhi Railway Station on Thursday morning. During interrogation, he tried to mislead the police, but later on revealed that he had left home on December 21 as he was not good at studies.

He told the police that his father, who is a doctor practising in a private clinic, was not giving him enough pocket money. So he staged his kidnapping and demanded ransom. According to him, he stayed at various hotels in Kolkata.
