City awaits a Pied Piper
Jammu, December 25 In response to a complaint filed by RTI Activist Raman Sharma urging the state authorities to launch a drive to remove rats in the old city, the Jammu Municipal Corporation claims that even 65,000 anti-rodent doses used by the corporation over the past two years have failed to eliminate rats from the old city. In his grievance petition, Raman has sought intervention of the State Health Department and JMC to get rid of rats. “Through this prayer I would urge you to kindly direct the state Health Department and municipal authorities to launch a full-fledged drive against the cat-sized rats in our locality. These rats are now spoiling everything, we have tried our best but now it is not in the hands of citizens. Therefore we want the intervention of the state government and its agencies to help the citizens to get rid of this nightmare. Hope you consider this prayer,” Sharma stated in his complaint. The JMC in response to the application has also expressed concern over the issue of increasing number of rats in the city. It may be mentioned here that last year 35,230 doses of anti-rodent solution were used to kill rats. This year 30,700 doses of the solution have been used till November. The menace may lead to the spread of epidemics because of the rats, Sharma said. chasing rats

JU to have swimming pool, basketball, tennis courts
Jammu, December 25 Sources said the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education had emphasised on the availability of adequate sports infrastructure besides providing its sportspersons ample opportunities to exhibit their skills at higher levels. Sources said the newly-constructed swimming pool would be of Olympic standards (50 m) while the basketball and lawn tennis courts would also be constructed on international standards. Sources said architects and experts who were invited by the JU authorities to brief them about the plan had presented a model of the sports faciltiies to be constructed to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Mohan Paul Singh Isher and other committee members. Soon after assuming charge as Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof Isher had stressed on creating new sports infrastructure in the varsity. “Officials of the Planning Committee have recommended that the infrastructure would be set up at the spot adjacent to Zorawar Singh Auditorium and Gymnasium Hall,” a JU official said. “In fact tendering process for the ambitious project is in the final stages and the works department of the university is likely to advertise tenders to initiate the process,” he said. Sources said the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education had also faced severe criticism from the students for not sending its teams in the inter-varsity competitions in different disciplines held across the country. Prof Dhian S Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, justified his decision by saying that the Jammu University lacked the infrastructure required to compete in these events. He, however, made it clear that it was better not to field a weak team to avoid humiliation after their early exit. “There is a set procedure for selection of teams in the inter-university competitions, which we have to follow. The recent cancellation of some teams in their respected disciplines is one such example. The teams were not well prepared and bad performance of the team creates a bad image of the university,” said another JU official. the blueprint
