Subscribers left in the lurch as Tata shuts shop
Jammu, December 18
Besides, the TTSL customers are also a harried these days lot due to poor services-both mobile as well as internet-since the last month when it came to fore that the company would close its operation in the state on January 18, 2013. There are over 1.5 lakh mobile subscribers of the company, apart from thousands of Tata Photon subscribers. “Despite the fact that the company had charged a hefty security deposits prior to issuing mobile and photon connections, not even a single word has been uttered by the TTSL management vis-à-vis refund of security deposits to subscribers, creating confusion among their minds. We have been facing ire of customers who visit our head office regularly,” a Jammu-based official said. The brewing resentment among subscribers could be gauged from the fact that they had even demanded immediate seizure of company’s infrastructure, until the people are paid their security deposits. Yesterday, the TTSL had made an official announcement to wind up its operation in Jammu and Kashmir. “Tata Teleservices license for the circle of Jammu and Kashmir was a part of 122 licenses of various operators which were cancelled by the Supreme Court in February 2012. Consequently, Tata Teleservices is constrained to withdraw services from Jammu and Kashmir circle with effect from January 2013 and as a result, your connection will be deactivated post January 18, 2013,” the company had said. The company had started its operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2008. It was supposed to renew its license by November 12, 2012 by getting fresh spectrum which it had failed to do so. “I had paid Rs 1,700 for Tata Photon device, which will be useless for me after January 18. Similarly, I subscribe a post-paid connection of Tata Indicom for which I had given a security deposit. I don’t know whether the company will refund the security deposit and return the amount which I had paid for the photon device,” Amit Sharma, a subscriber rued. Another subscriber said, “So far, no official word has come from the company on the return of the money which the subscribers had paid to get post-paid mobile and internet connections. It will be a case of robbery if it didn’t return the money,” the subscriber said. The TTSL officials evaded queries whether the company had any plans to return the security deposit to the customers. Meanwhile, Shri Ram Sena has demanded the state government not to allow Tata Telecommunication to discontinue services in the state before they return security deposits of the customers. Rajiv Mahajan, SRS state president said, “The company had announced closure of their venture in the state due to the non-availability of spectrum.” He also demanded that the state government should immediately seize the infrastructure of the company, until the customers are paid to their security deposit.” A spokesperson of TTSL said, “The high reserve price for spectrum has made business unviable for us in the state. As a result, the company was left with no option but to close down operations from January 18, 2013. This decision has been communicated to our business associates and the process related to channel partner settlement is being worked out. Announcements regarding specific steps being taken will be made in due course.” |
