Con man 'dupes' man of Rs 5 lakh
Bank CCTV footage tells a different story; victim, too, under police scanner

Ludhiana, December 18
A con man, posing as a banker, duped an employee of a textile company and fled with Rs 5 lakh here today. The suspect has been caught on a CCTV camera installed in the bank. The role of the textile company employee, Parminder Singh (57), has also come under the scanner after the police monitored the CCTV footage.

Thieves strike at shops, decamp with mobiles, goods worth lakhs
Ludhiana, December 18
Thieves struck at a mobile shop near Mata Rani Chowk in the old city area and decamped with high-end mobile phones and accessories worth lakhs of rupees. The incident came to light here this morning when shopkeepers of the mobile market informed Inderjit Kalra, owner of the shop, about the incident.

Trade unions' protest throws traffic out of gear
Ludhiana, December 18
Vehicles stuck in a traffic jam near Bharat Nagar Chowk in Ludhiana on Tuesday. A protest and "chakka jam" organised by the Joint Council of Trade Unions at Bharat Nagar Chowk, one of the busiest intersections on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur National Highway, threw traffic out of gear with motorists and other road users caught in a traffic jam for more than two hours here today.

School Games get off to a colourful start

Students perform bhangra on the opening day of the 58th National School Games in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Even as residents remember the third edition of the World Kabaddi Cup for kabaddi competitions and cultural functions organised on December 15 at Guru Nanak stadium, budding players who are here to participate in the 58th edition of the National School Games will remember the kabaddi cup for another reason.

Minister makes players wait for hours
Ludhiana, December 18
Participants wait for the chief guest at the games venue. Players from across the country, participating in the 58th edition of the National School Games being held at Guru Nanak Stadium, had to wait for over three hours for the Education Minister to reach the venue and inaugurate the games. Punjab Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka arrived over three hours late to open the National School Games.

Safai workers continue strike 

Jagraon, December 18
The indefinite hunger strike, launched by the temporary safai karamcharis, in support of their various long-pending demands entered its second day today. The safai karamcharis, working with the Jagraon Municipal Council, held a demonstration at Lala Lajpat Rai Park, situated in front of the local Municipal Council office and raised slogans against the state government.

A woman, aged between 35 to 40 years, was tested positive for HIV at the testing laboratory on the Red Ribbon Express today. According to the report of this special laboratory, three visitors have been tested positive for HIV so far.

In a shocking incident, a woman, whose husband died in the civil hospital on December 11, has alleged that the driver of a van, in which she was carrying her husband's body back to the village at night, asked her for sexual favour in lieu of money.

Gunjan wins dance contest
Young dancers Gunjan (IX) and Heena (XI) of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Udham Sngh Nagar, participated in the Talent Hunt-2012, organised by Indus World School on December 9. Out of the 550 dancers, these enthusiastic girls secured a place in top 12 dancers. The students further participated in the final round on December 16 where they competed with 120 students. Gunjan (IX) was declared as the best dancers during the competition. Principal Bandana Sethi applauded the efforts of the students.

Two booked for illegal sale of kerosene 
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 18
The Malaudh police has booked two members of a gang allegeldy involved in the sale of essential goods, meant to be supplied among residents through fair price shops, on the black market. As amany as 1,400 litres of kerosene and a tempo (PB 11 F 9603) were seized in a joint action undertaken by the police and food supply inspector Jaswinder Singh.

8 booked on charge of assaulting youth
Jagraon, December 18
The Jagraon police has registered a case against eight persons of Galib Kalan village for allegedly assaulting and abusing a youth of their village. All the accused are on the run.

Motorcycle stolen
Ludhiana, December 18
Attending a bhog ceremony at a gurdwara in Sarabha Nagar proved costly to an RTI activist after his motorcycle was stolen. "Without wasting time I dialled the helpline number-100 but it was busy. Then I called at the police control room but instead of sending the PCR cops and sounding an alert, the police told me to report the matter at the Sarabha Nagar police station," said Kuldeep Khaira.
