Jammu region reels under dry spell
Jammu, December 9 The weather in the region is dependent on western disturbances. In recent years, the rain has been getting delayed by 10 to 15 days which is not a good sign for farmers and residents. The Meteorological Department officials said strong western disturbances still eluded the region which has resulted in non-formation of low pressure winds over the state. This, they said, has resulted in a prolonged dry spell. “Though we are receiving heavy rainfall and snowfall every year, it is not uniform. It occurs in a short span of time while weather remains dry most of the time,” said Dr MK Khushu, chief scientist at the Agronomy Division of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-Jammu). Dr Khushu said there was 63.4 per cent below normal rainfall in Jammu region in October this year while 99 per cent below normal rainfall was recorded in November. After the driest ever November month this year, the situation will not be getting any better this month either. The forecasters fear the dry spell may continue for few more days or weeks. Met office said maximum and minimum temperature is likely to dip further in next few days since there is a cloudless sky. “Days are hot while nights are cold. We are waiting for the rain to enjoy the winters,” said Sheenu Raina, a college student. As per the forecast of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature will be around 23 degree Celsius on December 11 while the minimum temperature will be 9 degree Celsius. An official said the department recorded 0.9 degree Celsius as lowest ever temperature in Jammu city on December 28, 1998 since the state meteorological observatory was established in 1982. The all-time low temperature in Kashmir was recorded at minus 2.8 degree Celsius on December 13, 1964.

Garbage heaps give city residents tough time
Jammu, December 9 Furthermore, the sanitary situation is worsening with each passing day in absence of containers in several localities. Sadly, it is not only the solid waste but the foul smell emanating from various corners of the city is also giving tough time to commuters who pass through these dumps dotting the Temple City. Residents say these dumps are creating health problems for them as flies and stray dogs flock these sites. "We inhale the foul smell everyday which is badly affecting our health. We cannot even eat food properly. There are no containers in our locality,” said Aman Sharma, a shopkeeper in Roop Nagar. Despite a ban imposed by the government on burning of solid waste, the civic body is still practicing this with impunity. Residents of various localities such as Shastri Nagar, Nai Basti, Nanak Nagar, Channi Himmat, Janipur, and Talab Tillo allege that the MC safai karamcharis in their areas burn the garbage instead of lifting it on time. “The municipal staff does not lift the garbage and burn it in the open. There are no containers to allow residents to put their waste material,” said Sunil Sharma, a resident of Channi Himmat. The city is facing a huge challenge as the civic body has failed to find a suitable place for its disposal. Last year, plan to dump it at Kot Bhalwal area was resisted by the local residents. KL Khajuria, Municipal Commissioner, said they were facing some problems in placing garbage collection containers. New containers are being procured to meet the demand in various localities, he added. “The city population is expanding fast. To meet the growing demand, we are bringing in more bins which will be soon distributed in different localities. Steps are also being taken to stop the practice of open burning of solid waste.” Khajuria, however, asked people to dispose of their waste properly and not scatter it around. “All employees have been instructed not to burn the garbage. In fact, people are in the bad habit of burning domestic garbage,” Khajuria said. “While the government has set pilgrim tourism as main attraction in the state and is projecting the city as a pilgrim town, most of the people often go back with a bad image of the place in their mind,” said Ranjit Sharma, a local resident. Jammu city generates nearly 350 tonnes of garbage daily. Experts say there will be a tremendous increase in solid waste generation in the next decade.

Under pressure, DYSS agrees to reduce contingent strength
Jammu, December 9 The DYSS had earlier decided not to send “weak teams” for participation in major disciplines. Sources said after denying the U-19 Basketball team to compete in the championship, parents of the selected sportspersons had met the DYSS officials and requested them to allow their wards to participate which did not happen. The department had hardened its stance and decided to stop other contingents from competing in other important disciplines due to poor performance in previous editions. Sources added that some parents had approached the higher authorities and demanded an immediate intervention to ask the sports department to allow the teams to participate in important events in the National School Games. The department has decided to reduce the contingent strength making it clear this relaxation will not be given in future. Sources said efforts were afoot to find out the loopholes and plug them to ensure an improved performance of the contingent in the 59th edition of the coveted games. DYSS director Jai Pal Singh has asked the officials to formulate a concrete strategy to improve the skills of sportspersons in important disciplines. “Earlier, the department used to select more than 100-member contingent for participation in important disciplines. But it failed to win even a single medal which brought a bad name to the state,” a DYSS official said. “Before the commencement of the next competition, the department would focus on conducting coaching camps of medal winning disciplines at regular intervals and then identify the promising players to give them rigorous training through experts in order to enthuse self-confidence in him”, he maintained. Meanwhile, Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director, DYSS and Vice-President, School Games Federation of India (SGFI) told The Tribune, “We have decided to reduce the strength of contingent in the ongoing National School Games because it was difficult to convince the parents of sportspersons.” “But we made it clear to them that there will be no such relaxation next time as only strong teams will be allowed to participate”, the Deputy Director added. |

Jammu, December 9 The protesters said the official negligence had resulted in the death of several people in the recent past. Members of both organizations, led by Shiv Sena president Ashok Gupta, took out a light march to protest against the recent death of a family in an accident in Kathua. Gupta said the police was not taking action against overloading in passenger vehicles and rash driving was still common despite several police parties deployed on roads. The protesters demanded strict action against the violators and cancellation of licenses of habitual violators. They also urged the government to conduct a survey in rural and far-flung areas of the state where old vehicles were used to ferry people. Gupta said the responsibility of managing traffic should be transferred from traffic police to Road Transport Office (RTO) for better management. He said, “Violations are allowed on roads because police personnel are taking bribes. The traffic police is responsible for the mess which people have to witness everyday on city roads.” — TNS |

‘ReTs backbone of education system’
Rajouri, December 9
While addressing ReT teachers, Qureshi said they were the backbone of the education system as they had played a great role in raising the literacy level in the state. He said ReT teachers had filled in the gaps due to which the Education Department was lagging behind a few years back. He said there were hardly any schools in remote areas owing to non-availability of teachers but now, children in far-flung areas were getting educated near their homes only because of ReT teachers. The Jammu education director assured that the demands of ReT teachers across the state would be redressed soon, saying that the government was working in close coordination with him and the Kashmir education director in this regard.
