Narwal bypass emerges as new commercial hub
Jammu, December 3 Hundreds of shops, eating joints and showrooms have come up in the area in the recent past as a result of which land prices have shot up remarkably. The highway stretch, particularly from Channi Himmat till Sidhra, is abuzz with activity as new commercial establishments have come up here. The area which was covered with forests and shrubs till a decade ago is becoming a concrete jungle. All the main roads, including streets, are packed with shops and other commercial outlets. Reports suggest many of them have come up illegally in violation of the Jammu Master Plan. “Earlier, the focus was on the highway passing from Jammu to Satwari but now most of the tourist traffic gets diverted through the bypass. In the next few years, it will become a major commercial hub,” said Lal Din, a local resident, who is establishing a chain of shops near Sidhra. In the past few years, major automobile companies have opened their showrooms in absence of space in city’s central areas. The upgradation of the road to a national highway has given boost its commercial potential. The highway project has already missed its completion deadline in August this year. The deadline was then rescheduled to be met by the and of the year. The Jalandhar-Pathankot-Kunjwani National Highway has become a preferred route for lakhs of devotees going to Amarnath Yatra and Vaishno Devi shrine. Hence, the road remains overcrowded during the pilgrimage season. Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) president YV Sharma said, “The stretch will become a major commercial centre in near future as the focus of traders will be on this road. Not only this, the stretch has also witnessed emergence of a number of residential colonies.” The government has also cleared Rs 250 crore 60-km-long Jammu-Southern bypass project which will further create new commercial areas. The bypass will start from Raya Morh on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway and connect it to Ban Talab on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Along the way, it will pass through Miran Sahib, Raipur and Domana touching the Akhnoor road near Jhiri and also the upper areas of Chinore and Roopnagar. Stretch becomes new hotspot

JKCA to take up key issues with president Farooq Abdullah today
Jammu, December 3 Sources said the boycott by some Kashmir Province cricketers against the alleged biased selection of the team and also locking of Sher-i-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar besides other key issues would be taken up with JKCA President Dr Abdullah who is likely to reach Valley tomorrow. “The indiscipline shown by the senior cricketers of Kashmir Province- Sammiullah Beig and Majid Dar- who had opted out despite being selected to play the ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Assam in Guwahati is not an encouraging sign. Such incidents will encourage young players to repeat such things in future over trivial issues,” a JKCA official said. “JKCA Treasurer Manzoor Wazir, who recently offered his resignation to JKCA president owing to selection row, was not accepted. We will brief Dr Abdullah that how the senior cricketers had decided not to accompany the team and that too after submitting a written apology to the association along with other cricketers,” he added. “After the locking of Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium incident by the cricketers, we have requested the district administration to provide adequate security on the stadium premises till the situation gets normal. We would also appeal to the JKCA president to ensure security arrangements so that such incidents do not happen again,” the official said. “We are not against the cricketers no matter if they are senior or junior. But if they continue to involve in acts of indiscipline it would send a wrong message to other associations across the state. We are not going to tolerate this non-seriousness in future and for that we will request Dr Farooq Abdullah to take stern action against the law-breakers,” the official added. “Just look at the way the J&K team is performing against Assam. Young cricketers who became the victims of politics are now playing brilliantly. They have realised that they were misguided by some vested interests,” he opined. |

West Pak refugees to take out cycle march to Parliament
Jammu, December 3 The refugees have already started mobilising people to make Parliament Chalo march a success. Labha Ram Gandhi, chairman of the West Pakistani Refugees Action Committee (WPSAC) yesterday organised a meeting of refugees in Vijaypur and apprised them of the march. “This is a high time to launch the decisive battle. We have decided to take out Parliament Chalo cycle march this month to make countrymen aware about our plight and grave injustice meted out to our people,” Gandhi said while speaking to The Tribune. He said around 150 refugees riding on bicycles would march to Parliament. “We will cover Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh before reaching New Delhi. Our main objective is to make people aware about the grave injustice being meted out to us over the years,” Gandhi said. They had decided to rope in more organisations in their struggle for getting citizenship rights, he added. He alleged that Kashmir-centric parties, including the ruling National Conference and opposition Peoples Democratic Party, were opposing citizenship rights to West Pakistani refugees citing special status of the state. Gandhi also slammed the Congress-led UPA government for making “hollow promises with the refugees”. Meanwhile, taking serious notes over the construction of illegal colonies in Jammu, Kranti Dal took on the state government for ignoring the demands of refugees, including those from West Pakistan and the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK). “The state government is supporting foreigners from Burma, Bangladesh and Nepal and working for their settlement in violation of Article 370. It has done nothing for the welfare of refugees who had migrated here in 1947, 1965 and 1971,” said Anan Sharma, Kranti Dal chairman. -- TNS |

Students demand action against traffic violators
Jammu, December 3 The protesters demanded strict action against those drivers who violate traffic rules. Students of Polytechnic College in Purkhoo, along with the leaders of the National Panthers Students Union (NPSU) boycotted their classes and expressed anger against the death of one Sandeep Kumar who died in a road accident near Domana recently. The students gathered at the main gate of the college in morning and demanded that the Traffic Police should take action against the violators who were posing threat to commuters and pedestrians. NPSU’s rural wing president Deepak Raj Panday led the protest. He said 37 people had lost lives in one month but no action had been taken to streamline the traffic. The protesters alleged that the Traffic Police was not performing its duty well. A student said if more traffic police personnel were pressed into service on this portion of the road, especially from Jammu and Akhnoor to regularise the traffic, the rate of accident and death might be reduced. The protesters said the Akhnoor road, an important route connecting Jammu via Poonch to Kashmir, had become a death trap for the commuters. NPSU state president Partap Singh Jamwal alleged that the government had failed on every front to make life of people secure. He demanded action against the drivers who run their vehicles on high speed and also sought fine on violators. He said the Jammu Poonch highway should be started soon. |

Before agitation, employees on Samparak Abhiyan
Jammu, December 3 Enhancement in the retirement age is one of the key demands of the amalgam of nearly dozen unions of government employees. The malgam had negotiated on a number of issues with the Sub-Committee, including removal of pay anomalies, conversion of the cost of living allowance into dearness allowance (DA) and regularisation of daily wagers. The campaign has been started across the state to apprise the trade union leaders about the issues employees were facing. Many trade unions operating from Kashmir and Jammu divisions had formed small unions splitting the original EJAC which was established in 1992. “It was due to the narrow and selfish approach of some union leaders that the demands of employees have not been fulfilled yet. The present mess created by these so-called leaders has only helped the government thus badly jeopardising the trade union movement in the state,” said Subash Verma, a senior union leader. Suresh Sharma, a union leader, said they were receiving good response from employees in various districts and they would have broader and united platform. Other demands include regularisation of daily wagers, consolidated, ad hoc and contractual workers in all departments, removal of pay anomalies in all cadres, increase in the medical allowance to Rs 1000, Sixth Pay Commission benefits to PSUs and budgetary support to sick PSUs. Sources said factionalism within employee unions had provided an advantage to the government to avoid a sustained stir. But hectic efforts being made to forge unity among various organisations to present a united challenge to the administration had not been achieved so far, they added. “Only a united front can make the administration relent. The government has no regard for problems faced by workers, particularly daily wagers working in different departments,” said Sushil Sudan, a union member. What are their demands
