Even 28 complaints fail to move police

As many as 28 complaints of trespass, assault and intimidation filed by a woman at the public window of the police headquarters over the past one year were not enough to wake up the Chandigarh Police from its slumber.

Kashmiri students attacked in Barwala engineering college

At least 30 students hailing from Kashmir were attacked by assailants at the hostel of Panchkula Engineering College, Barwala, last night. The victims alleged that most of the attackers, about 70 in number, were outsiders.

In a daring robbery at gunpoint, armed assailants looted a father-son duo of Rs 6 lakh in Mani Majra this evening.

RLA auction: 0001 fetches Rs 8 lakh

The “Rolls Royce” parked outside a hotel in Panchkula. In an amount that could fetch a base model of a Sedan or 25 tolas of gold, a Panchkula-based businessman, Amitabh Singh Chandel, today paid Rs 8 lakh for a vanity number 0001 for his Rs 2.50 crore Rolls Royce car during an auction of vanity numbers in the CH 01 AQ series at the Chandigarh Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA).

Today’s auction of vanity numbers at the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) turned out to be a tiring exercise for participants when the RLA-cum-SDM, Kavle V Parashuram, arrived late for the auction at the RLA office.

Children display athletic ‘abilities’

A mentally challenged child throws a softball during a special athletics meet at the Sector 46 Sports Complex, Chandigarh, on Monday. The Sector 46 Sports Complex hosted a special athletics meet today. Participants showcased their agility and perseverance in various events, including 100m race and long jump. What made the event special was that these young athletes belonged to the Regional Institute of Medical Handicap (RIMH), who got together to mark World Disability Day.

Mohali MC proposes to extend its jurisdiction
Mohali, December 3
The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MMC) has sent its area's extension proposal, under which it has proposed to add 27 new sectors and 20 villages under its jurisdiction, to the state government for approval. A senior official of the corporation said the proposal, which was prepared in reference to the notified master plan of the area, had been sent to the government last week.

Encroachments back in P’kula in just 2 days

Merely two days after the encroachments in Panchkula were removed the violators are back again and have erected tents. The tent outside the residence of former Punjab Chief Secretary, Jai Singh Gill, stands tall near house number 199, Sector 6, Panchkula. Even the bathroom and kitchen of the staff of the Punjab IGP, BK Garg, has again come up near his residence in Sector 7, Panchkula.

Out of the two former Punjab DGPs, who had defied the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court by allegedly encroaching upon a part of the service lane and a greenbelt near their houses in Sectors 8 and 18 respectively, one of them got the temporary shelter removed today.

Govt schools yet to receive forms

With just two days left for the admission process to begin in the government schools, the schools are still waiting for the admission forms. As per the common admission schedule, all the government schools need to start distributing the admission forms from December 5, and subsequently receive them by December 15, for the admission to the entry-level classes for the next academic session.

There is no requirement for a sub-quota within the 25 per cent reserved seats under The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, stated the UT Education Department, in its reply to the private schools. The written reply will soon be sent to the private schools.

Students of Sohanjana Eco Club and other students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, observed National Anti-Pollution Day on the school campus. Plantation of indigenous plants and promotion of cycling, car pooling and public transport were the ideas discussed to curb pollution. Students of the club also participated in a painting competition.

National Pharmacy Week observed
Ropar, December 3
Over 1,250 people, including 1,020 students from 25 senior secondary schools, visited Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jujhar Singh Memorial College of Pharmacy, Bela, during the National Pharmacy Week. A workshop was also organised. 

Murder accused arrested
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 3
Fear of social stigma propelled 50-year-old Gursharan Singh, a resident of Salani village near Amloh, to kill a 35-year-old woman and her 11-year-old son. Gursharan allegedly pushed them into the Bhakra canal about three months ago. The police has arrested the accused and a case under Sections 365, 498, 302, 201of the IPC has been registered against him.

2 drug peddlers held
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 3
The district police has arrested two drug peddlers during checking at different places in the district and recovered 2,100 intoxicant tablets from their possession. The police also arrested two chain snatchers at Sirhind. HS Mann, SSP, said the Khamano police had arrested Jagtar Singh, alias Soni, a resident of Morinda and recovered 1,000 intoxicant tablets.

Arrest warrants were issued against the chairman of the National Consumer Awareness Group Society for failing to comply with the order of the UT Consumer Forum for refunding the booking amount to the complainant.

Stepfather rapes 10-yr-old at Mani Majra
Chandigarh, December 3
In a shocking incident, a Class five student was allegedly raped by her step-father last night. The police has registered a case against 32-year-old Sushil Kumar who is absconding. The police said the 10-year-old girl was raped when her mother was out of station. The incident came to light when she returned home and her daughter narrated the sequence of events to her.

Man dies in road accident
Zirakpur, December 3
A 50-year-old man was killed in a road accident near Zirakpur last night. The incident took place when he was returning after attending a marriage function at Occasion resort. The deceased was identified as Balwinder Singh, a resident of Seehanpur village, Mohali.

6 held for killing scrap dealer 
Chandigarh, December 3
A day after the murder of a scrap dealer in Hallo Majra, the police has arrested six accused, while one is still absconding. A scrap dealer, Siya Ram, was allegedly killed by the accused owing to prior enmity.

Man hit by Scorpio, dies
Grief-striken family members of the deceased in Chandigarh Chandigarh, December 3
A 50-year-old man died after being hit by a Scorpio on the dividing road of Sector 10 and 16 here today. The victim, Krishan Kumar, an employee of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, was attached with the road wing of the MC. He was on duty and crossing the road to enter into Sector 16 when the mishap occurred. The driver fled the spot and Krishan was declared brought dead at the hospital.

Yuvraj beats Savneet

Chandigarh, December 3
Yuvraj Singh defeated Savneet Bajwa 4-2, 0-4 and 7-3, during the ongoing AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament today. The tournament is being held at the CLTA and Lake Sports Complex. In other match Sahishnu Sharma made a comeback after losing the first set and registered win (4-0) in the second set . Later, in the decider he crushed his opponent 7-0.

Dikshant school strike 45 medals in skating
Mohali, December 3
Dikshant International School won the eighth Mohali District Roller Skating Championship. The skaters bagged a total of 45 medals, including 25 gold medals, 13 silver medals and seven bronze medals. A total of 200 skaters participated in the championship. The winners will represent the district in the upcoming Punjab State Roller Skating and Hockey Championship to be held later this month.
