Fatehgarh Sahib, December 3
Fear of social stigma propelled 50-year-old Gursharan Singh, a resident of Salani village near Amloh, to kill a 35-year-old woman and her 11-year-old son. Gursharan allegedly pushed them into the Bhakra canal about three months ago. The police has arrested the accused and a case under Sections 365, 498, 302, 201of the IPC has been registered against him.

SSP Hardial Singh Mann said the relatives of the boy had approached the police after a news about the recovery of a body with name Navjot engraved on the arm appeared in the media. During the investigation, the accused told the police that he had visited his mother-in-law's house few months ago and came in contact with Sukhvinder kaur. As Sukhvinder's husband was a drug addict, the accused was able to develop physical relationship with her. The accused, who was working as a mason, arranged an accommodation for Rs 800 near the Aam Khas Bhag at Sirhind in August and started living with Sukhvinder and her younger son Navjot.

However, after realising that he will face trouble over the extra-marital affair, he on the pretext of paying obeisance at the Khwaja Peer brought the duo to the Bhakra canal near Shehjadpur village and pushed them into the canal.

Arrest warrants issued against chief of consumer awareness group
Ritika Jha Palial
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 3
Arrest warrants were issued against the chairman of the National Consumer Awareness Group Society for failing to comply with the order of the UT Consumer Forum for refunding the booking amount to the complainant.

The forum had earlier directed the group (through its chairman) to refund the membership amount of Rs 1,51,000 with interest at the rate of 9 per cent per annum to the complainant within a stipulated period.

The UT Consumer Forum issued the warrant on November 15 for securing the presence of the opposite party in the court, since the latter had failed to comply with the previous directions.

On the complaint of Deepak Mahajan, the forum, on July 30 this year, had directed the chairman of the group, PJS Mehta, to refund the booking amount paid by the former with interest.

The booking amount of Rs 1,51,000 was deposited by Mahajan in August 2005. The court had directed the opposite party to refund the amount with interest from the date of deposition of the amount, apart from paying the litigation cost of Rs 10,000.

Failing to comply with the order, Mehta was issued a notice calling upon to show “as to why he should not be tried and punished for non-compliance. The sole contention of the opposite party is that the society does not have any liquid amount to handover to the complainant at this stage.”

“It has been contended by the chairman of the opposite party that the society has refunded a large amount earlier to its members on their demand and now it is short of funds,” reads the copy of the order. The forum then issued the arrest warrants.

Complainant’s lawyer Pankaj Chandgothia said, “The society was originally meant to promote consumer awareness only, but later, it also took up a group housing scheme which led to the consumer dispute.”
