Fate of Sunday markets hangs in
balance
Dehradun, December 13 At the maximum, he said only 167 recognised traders would be allowed to operate. The SSP made it clear that if required, he would move the High Court in order to enforce a ban on holding markets on either side of city roads. The Mayor, too, easily gave in to the pressure built up by lobbyists to allow their groups to hold stalls in the Sunday market without giving the slightest consideration to serious traffic jams and multiple other problems. SSP Kewal Khurana, who is paying special attention to streamlining traffic in the city and has not allowed these Sunday markets to be held at the Parade Ground for the past three weeks, said: “If issues related to law & order and traffic management are the responsibilities of the police, then other departments should not create such conditions that it becomes difficult for us to carry out our duties." He said: " Who will take responsibility if a serious accident happened due to movement of vehicles among the swelling crowd, or a parked vehicle gets stolen, or a gold chain or purse gets snatched?" He said: “ On Sunday people who are settled outside come to the city. The working class and families get time to shop on this holiday. Because of the movement of the floating population, the city roads remain heavily crowded on Sundays as well. So occupying the roadsides for holding makeshift markets and creating traffic jams is impractical. If the Police Department did not get support from other departments on this issue, then I will move the High Court to enforce a ban on holding Sunday markets.” While extending sympathy to stall owners, he said they could be given open space far from the main roads to hold markets so that traffic and law and order problems did not crop up. The Mayor gave nod to 60 others, besides 167 stall owners, to use the space near Parade Ground to hold their stalls for the Sunday market.

Treat magic as a holy art, says Samrat Shankar
Haridwar, December 13 Popularly known as Jadugar Samrat Shankar, the veteran magician, who has to his credit a whopping 28,000 plus magic performances, appealed to magicians here today to take this art as a holy one. "Of late many incidents of magic art being used for wicked acts have come to light, which is degrading the noble magic profession. Already due to multiple entertainment-media tools, magicians thriving on sheer performances are facing the heat. If such misuse of this art carries on, then people's faith in us (dedicated magic practitioners) may also wither away," said Shankar, while talking to TNS. On the art of magic, Shankar termed it as a mix of skill and illusion, where hard work, dedication, concentration and timing played an important part. Samrat Shankar has also been quite active when it comes to charitable causes. He donates a major portion of his earnings in charity. Till date he has donated Rs 1.65 crore for charitable purpose and has also been pivotal in setting up a Magicians Welfare Fund in India. Born in Shri Karanpur, Rajasthan, Shankar as a child got enchanted with magic at the tender age of 12, seeing magician Dev Kumar of Bengal. Attributing his success to his yoga guru Swami Dev Maharaj, Shankar reveals that yoga is also extremely beneficial for magicians as, apart from controlling other senses, the magician has to first control his thoughts, movement and thinking, too. Due to spiritual, natural and religious aspects of Uttarakhand, Shankar wants to set up a magician-training academy in the state for which he is seeking assistance from the Uttarakhand government for providing land space. With multi-entertainment media options available, was there a danger of the younger generation getting weaned away from magic?Pat came the reply from the master magician: "We feel the heat but we also innovate in our items as per the demands of the audience. For metropolitan, urban, semi-urban, rural and foreign audiences, we have many a different presentation. Besides, we now present the 2-hour odd magic show in a kaleidoscopic-theatrical manner that leaves he audience spellbound when it comes out of the auditorium," said Shankar. To aficionados as well as new learners of this ancient art which emanated in India, Samrat Shankar says: " It is an ancient Indian practice which needs to be declared as national art. Work hard, practice as much as you can, try to read the psychology and eye movement of the audience. It takes not only time but a lot of time to get expertise in this art." |

Small-time traders meet Mayor
Dehradun, December 13 The traders demanded that they should be provided space near the Parade Ground. Mayor Chamoli made it clear to them that stall owners could not sit anywhere they liked near the ground during the Sunday market. He said they must sit only on the approved location, otherwise the police would remove them and issue challans. The system, however, does not seem to be full proof and could lead to an altercation among these traders over the occupation of space. Earlier also, resentment was witnessed among traders over the space. Another contentious issue is the fight among two groups - local and outsiders. Jitender Kumar, a trader, said: “We are 65 shoe sellers who sit on the ground and sell our products. Despite the fact that all of us are local, those who come from outside the city occupy the space and get receipts from the DMC. They have also formed their own factions.” The DMC issues receipts to the traders in the morning and charges Rs 100 for the day. Congress leader Lal Chand Sharma said all stall owners should he given space to sell their products around the Parade Ground on Sundays. |
