State's stand on domicile certificate comes under fire
Dehradun, December 9 President of the association Jagmohan Negi said the other states in the country were abiding by the decision of the Supreme Court over the issue of domicile and caste certificate, whereas the newly formed Uttarakhand a adopted different stance altogether. He said people of lower castes or Dalit communities who came from Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar were easily getting these certificates, but those who hailed from the hills were facing huge problems for the same. BJP leader Ravinder Jugran said those who settled in the state after 2000 would benefit from the state government’s policy on domicile certificate. He said: “The outsiders who came in the state after 2000 will vie for the benefits or facilities, which in reality are deserved by the hill people, who had been living in the state for several decades and many generations. It is this section of the hill people who struggled for the formation of the state and also sacrificed their children for it.” Leader of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (J) Omi Uniyal said the state government, on the one hand, was talking of creating infrastructure in Gairsain but on the other hand was hesitating to get the proposal regarding declaring it as summer capital passed in the Vidhan Sabha. District president of the organisation Pradeep Kukreti said the state government itself promised to give Rs 3000 to each dependent of statehood martyr but now the government was shirking from doing so by citing the reason of crunch of funds. He said the government was attempting to give employment to people of their own choice by providing them with the domicile certificate. Secretary Ramlal Khanduri said the issue of domicile and caste certificate had been reduced to the subject of division between people of plains and hills, which had distracted the attention from the main cause.

Selaqui students, staff carry out cleanliness drive at Vikasnagar
Dehradun, December 9 About 120 school and
college students and 30 teachers participated in the drive. The drive was inaugurated by
Navprabhat, local MLA from Vikasnagar. Other guests of honour were the Chairman of the local municipality, ML Shah, Station House Officer of the Vikasnagar police station, Vinod Kumar Jetha, and SDM, Vikasnagar, Ashok Kumar. Armed with garbage
collection bags, banners and placards, the students made sincere attempts
to make the local residents aware of the crucial need for living in sanitary and clean surroundings. The authorities of Selaqui education society also
participated in the drive. The Vice-Chairman of the institute, Major General Basant Singh (retd), school Headmaster Rakesh Singh Tomar and school Deputy Headmaster Jashvir Chaudhary were eager participants as well. The drive spanned a distance of 2 km between the Vikasnagar municipality and Pahari Gali. The aim behind the
drive was to emphasise the dire need for people to take up the task of
maintaining clean, sanitary surroundings. Cleanliness of public areas becomes an onerous task if left entirely to the local authorities. The students warned
the locals that if they do not become aware of the need for clean living, they will soon be victim to many diseases that can easily be avoided by taking simple precautions for sanitation. The students encouraged the people to pick up garbage and dispose
it wisely. They did so by displaying motivating slogans and leading by example. To the surprise of the onlookers, they did
not hesitate in picking up garbage along the road. The cleanliness drive
will end with its second phase on the 14th of December, 2012, when a similar cleanliness
campaign will be conducted for the locals at Selaqui. |
CPI, CPM, Samajwadi Party convene joint meeting on FDI
Dehradun, December 9 Member, National Council, CPI, Samar Bhandari, said by bringing FDI into multi-brand retail, the Centre was affecting the interests of four crore shopkeepers, who were running from small to big 1.30 lakh shops in the country. He said the retail business which contributed 11 per cent of the total GDP should not have been thrust upon people of the country. While alluding to places like USA and Europe, he said these places provided subsidy to their farmers in billions, which shielded them from the harmful effects of FDI, but a country like India would never do so. He also brought attention to the controversial atomic energy treaty by the Centre in 2004, saying that the countrymen had all the right to know what happened to that treaty and it's benefits, of which Centre talked highly while supporting it brazenly. He said the FDI would also meet the same fate. State president, SP, SN Sanchan, said the SP had made it's position clear by staging a walkout on the FDI issue in the Rajya Sabha. He said since the state was free to enforce or reject it, so the SP had chosen to opt for the latter in Uttar Pradesh. He said if Uttarakhand tried to adopt it, it would fight vehemently against it. This very legislation would also expose other parties, especially BJP, when it would also exercise it's right with regard to implementing the FDI in states as well. He said his party was always ready to support those who would oppose FDI in any form or at any platform in the country. |

Dehradun, December 9 Talking to The Tribune here today, Maneka said the state had a wealth of wildlife and poachers were now finding the state an easy prey. “Poachers that have been targeting different states of the country are now eyeing Uttarakhand, as the state has a wealth of wildlife. The forest authorities need to be very cautious of the poachers,” said Maneka. Stating that Uttarakhand had a healthy population of elephants, Maneka asked the state wildlife authorities to come up with an elephant-rescue centre in the state. There was a notion that animal sacrifice in Uttarakhand hills cannot be stopped but this notion has been proved wrong,” she said. She also congratulated the PFA volunteers in the state for making it possible. She also questioned sacrifice of camels. “Camel is not an eating animal as per the Indian laws and thus cannot be allowed for sacrifice,” she said, while adding that the even sacrifices of goats could take place at designated places. She pointed out that in the Frankfurt fair, 50 per cent of the insects come from India, indicating the level of illegal wildlife trade in the country. She said wildlife trade was today very systematic and was conducted through Internet. She asked the Forest Department to call a meeting of it the IT cell to keep a tab on wildlife trade on Internet.
