Matra Sadan saints plan agitation from Dec 10
Haridwar, December 6 From December 10 onwards, Matra Sadan saints will stage an agitation. This was disclosed by Matra Sadan Ashram founder Swami Shivanand here today. Matra Sadan has also written a letter to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna regarding cutting of trees for construction of a road from Kankhal downstream to the pious river Ganga that passes through the saint-dominated areas till Jagjeetpur. Swami Shivanand alleged a nexus between quarrying mafia and some administrative officers in the region in view of the multi-crore profit accruing from illegal quarrying. Talking to TNS, Swami Shivanand said that he would approach the apex court for contempt of court against the Uttarakhand government and the Haridwar district administration for flouting directions of the court regarding banning of quarrying in the Bishanpur-Bhogpur river bed. Citing an order dated 05/12/2011, which stated banning of mining and crushing till submission of an environmental impact assessment report in the Bishanpur-Bhogpur areas, the revered saint sought an explanation from the state government and the district administration for flouting the order by allowing quarrying in these areas. He alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched by pro- quarrying forces to negate the movement of Matra Sadan carried on for the cause of the holy Ganga. Swami Shivanand decided to skip the Allahabad Maha Kumbh in view of the upcoming anti-quarrying agitation. |

Reverse Osmosis water equipment unsafe for human health: Scientist
Mussoorie, December 6 Speaking to mediapersons in Mussoorie on the sidelines of the chemistry fair being organised at a school here, he said that the RO water was nothing but a form of distilled water that was bereft of most of the natural inorganic minerals present in natural water that was important for the growth of the human body. Elaborating further he said that the Reverse Osmosis (RO) purified water was unhealthy and should only be used for industrial applications and not for human consumption. Sharma said that RO filters could not filter substances that were less dense than water, such as traces of pesticides and herbicides. And since RO filters completely filtered out traces of minerals that naturally occurred in water, it was essentially removing minerals that were essential for health. Another disadvantage was the wastage of water while using Reverse Osmosis equipment. One required around 2 to 3 liters of regular tap water in order to produce a litre of filtered water. The water that was not filtered was essentially utilised for cleaning the semi-permeable membrane in the RO filter. With the amount of water that went to waste, using an RO filter was generally not recommended in areas where there was a short supply of water. The RO system in the process of removing contamination from the water also removed minerals which were required by the human body, thus destroying the digestive and the immunity system of an individual. He further informed that several tests conducted by the laboratory of science and technology on RO filters in Dehradun by Specs revealed that the minerals such as iron etc which were present in natural water in minimum quantities were found to be absent in the RO water. He also said that tests also revealed that the most of the RO filters installed in Dehradun were selling the equipments without approval of any designated agency such as ISI. Brij Sharma demanded that the state government should formulate a policy to monitor and regulate such RO companies which were claiming to provide safe drinking water at the expense of ordinary citizens. However, when contacted the officials from the firms selling such equipments had a different view about the RO filters. Speaking under anonymity, they said that that Reverse Osmosis, also known as hyper filtration, was the process by which water molecules were forced through a 0.0001 micron semi-permeable membrane through the use of water pressure. This membrane allowed only microscopic water molecules to pass through, filtering out almost everything else, including 90-99% of all contaminants in the water. RO systems removed minerals from tap water. Science behind miracles explained
A three-day chemistry fair began at Mussoorie Girls Inter-College with an objective of promoting scientific understanding among the students in Mussoorie today. On the first day, the resource person, Devi Shankar, tried to communicate the use of science in daily life through puppetry which was much appreciated by the students. Yogesh Bhatt explained science behind miracles to the students. He also demonstrated the scientific reasons behind preparing tea on human head along with eating fire and piercing the tongue using a trident. He also explained the use of surface tension while performing tricks on the occasion. Dr Brij Mohan Sharma demonstrated the adulteration testing technique used on food items such as turmeric, chilly, black pepper, milk and milk products, tea, coffee, besan, heeng, edible oils and cereals. |
