Students on heritage walk visit Jhanda Sahib Gurdwara
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 25
As part of Spic Macay’s heritage walk programme, Carman School and Kasiga School and Spic Macay’s teams were taken on a walk to Jhanda Sahib Gurdwara here today.

The students visited the corridors and domes of the Jhanda Sahib, the monument which was constructed by Guru Ram Rai, the elder son of seventh Sikh Guru, who came here in 1675. Spic Macay these days is conducting heritage walk programmes in various schools of Dehradun with the motto to create awareness among the students about the key historic places in the city.

History is revisited through the heritage walk and the students are enlightened about the rich cultural and architectural treasures the city possess, taking a break from books and studies.

The brief introduction of the historic events related to the Jhanda Sahib ignited interests among the students to go around and see places where the founder of this city lived a spiritual life. The eye catching paintings using the natural colours, the architectural tombs, the huge iron vessels used for cooking and the pully system which helps in carrying out the greatest task of cooking for a very large crowd, amazed the students.

The Jhanda mela that is celebrated on the fifth day of Holi where people from all over the city and in and around the state throng to witness speaks the sacred memory of the revered guru.

The structure, resembling the constructions of the Mughals, the mural paintings depicting the scenes from Mahabharat, Ramayan, Krishna leela and Laila Majnu and even the British were the main attractions that made the students realise the importance of architectural and artistic possession Dehradun has.

The walk around the heritage buildings made it clear to the students that even after centuries of growth, the old buildings and monuments occupy the predominant position in the history of any city. Though the new growth tends to overshadow the older areas of the city, the glorious past can never be forgotten.

Akila Ramasami from Spic Macay said this heritage walk was an eye opener to all young citizens of Doon to preserve and protect the pride of the place where they lived. No doubt, the few hours spent inside the Jhanda Sahib Gurdwara will have a long lasting impression in the budding young minds.
