Mussoorie, November 18
The Festival of Lessons and Carols was celebrated at the historic Christ Church situated at Library Bazaar to mark the beginning of the festive season in town today.

Thoughtful lessons and beautiful renditions of traditional carols by members of the Christian community echoed at the church.

The festival began with choir ‘O’ Beautiful star of Bethlehem’ which was sung by students of Wynberg Allen School. It was followed by lessons from Genesis 3:1-15 titled ‘Adam and Eve rebel against god and are cast out of the Garden of Eden’ read out by Enosh Thomas from Woodstock Hindustani Church.

The choir from the Church of North India (CNI) Intermediate College, Dehradun, sang ‘Chup hai yeh chanda’ and ‘See him lying on a bed of straw’ while the drama teacher from Woodstock School sang duet ‘O’ Lord of Light’ duet along with her husband. The choir from Woodstock Hindustani Church sang ‘Bethlehem mein chamka sitara’ in praise of the lord on the occasion.

The congregational hymn, ‘Hark! The herald angels sing’, and carol ‘Dekho suno, gahnti baji’ by Ritesh Farmer created a festive and spiritual spirit around the church.

The choir from Hilton School, Dehradun, and Woodstock School were also appreciated by the devotees.

Head of the Christ Church Eric Templeton offered special prayers and read out verses from the Bible. Speaking on the occasion, he said the festival marked the beginning of the Christmas season. He further said the people should shun violence and work towards a peaceful world as propounded by Jesus Christ, who laid down his life for the sake of humanity.

The Christ Church is one of the oldest landmarks in the town with its gothic design and the pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows. A deodar tree planted by the Princess of Wales on March 4, 1906, after attending morning service at the church exists even today.

“It was founded in 1836 as an Anglican Church (Church of England). Shortly after Independence, the parish became part of the newly formed Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon. On November 29, 1970, the Christ Church became part of the Church of North India,” said Templeton.
