Dehradun, November 8
The Special Task Force (STF), which has been cracking cases one after another for the past many days, today achieved a major success by apprehending seven accused who were planning to commit five big crimes in the state.

The names of the accused are Anubhav Vashisht (22), resident of Bijnor, Deepak Chaudhary (24) of Dehradun, Sachin Kumar (23), resident of Haridwar, Irfan (20) of Roorkee, Sazid Ali (20), Dehradun, Ajay Kumar Saini (20), Bijnor, and Deepak Kumar (22), resident of Dehradun.

The accused were arrested from a dilapidated vacant building near Ring Road by the STF with the help of the city police. The accused had plan to loot a jeweller near the Shimla bypass three days ago.

They also had a plan to commit a dacoity at Kankhal in Haridwar, bank robbery in the city, contract killing in Roorkee and another contract killing in Nagina.

The police has recovered two stolen motorcycles and one gold chain from them.

While addressing the press conference, Deputy Inspector General, Dehradun Range, Sanjay Gunjiyal said, “The STF has done a great job by arresting the criminals and averting five big crimes from taking place in the state.”

He said the STF was tracking the activities of Anubhav ever since he had been released from jail last month. Anubhav was arrested for being involved in the much-talked about murder of jailor Narender Khampa in Roorkee last year.

Main accused Sunil Rathi was still in jail for Khampa’s murder. Besides, Anubhav had also been jailed for another murder case two years ago. Another accused Deepak too had been put behind bars in 2010 for being active in illegal liquor business.

It was after Anubhav released from the jail that he formed a new gang. This Monday, the accused followed jeweller Chander Mohan, owner of Meenaxi Jewellery Shop at the Shimla bypass. They had plan to waylay him and throw him red chilli power in his eyes before looting him.

The accused also carried the revolver to kill him in case he protested. But Mohan did not lose his cool. He also had no idea of being followed by them until today when the police called him gave the information disclosed by the accused.

In Roorkee, shooter Nafiz, who had gone to jail with regard to the Jindal murder case in 2005, had entrusted Irfan the task to eliminate Nitin, a relative of the Jindal. Irfan had been promised money for the killing. In Nagina too, the gang was to kill three women for Rs 3 lakh. Rs 1.50 lakh was already paid to them.

SSP A Senthil and SSP Kewal Khurana were also present in the press conference. The DIG announced a reward of Rs 5,000 and the SSP of Rs 2,500 for the police team for cracking this case.

Nautanki is one of the most popular folk operatic theatre performance traditions of South Asia, particularly in northern India. Before the advent of Bollywood, Nautanki was the single most popular form of entertainment in the villages and towns of northern India. Several art theatrical forms, including contemporary theatre and cinema, borrow heavily from this art form in India.Nautanki was also known as Svang. Bhagat, a 400-year-old form of operatic drama was a forerunner of Svang and Nautanki and is mentioned in the Ain-i-Akbari. Gulab Bai shone as its brightest star, it's foremost exponent. She began acting in Nautankis in the early 1930s and rose to dizzy heights. By the time she died in 1996, she was widely acknowledged as the uncrowned queen of nautanki. The organisers of Virasat, Reach, brought to Dehradun a special presentation of Gulab Bai's nautanki with their famous play "Raja Harishchandra."

Ex-DM sends report to govt on land encroachment by mafia
Indicates connivance of officials, employees
Seema Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 8
Ravinath Raman, who relinquished charge as District Magistrate of Dehradun yesterday, has sent a report to the state government with regard to encroachment and illegal acquisition of government land worth Rs 300 crore by land mafia in Dehradun district.

Out of the total land, 100 hectares, which were usurped by the land sharks, have also been identified.

It has been found out that the employees were hand-in-glove with the mafia in the whole bargain.

According to sources, the land mafia, which has encroached upon the land, has done the task so meticulously that it is not easy to pinpoint and lay accusations so easily.

Raman had asked for a team of experts to carry out the task and prepare a documentation report in this regard.

He has indicated towards the connivance of officials and employees of the collectorate with the land mafia in the matter.

The state government has not taken any decision on the matter till now. It is expected that soon something may come out of it. Raman said: “The encroachment over land in the whole district has been done with great precision. As the role of many officials and employees of the collectorate has come under scanner for making this wide encroachment possible, it would not be easy to unravel the complication. This is the reason I have asked for a team which has good knowledge of the city to conduct an enquiry into this matter.”

It was found that a fake stay order on the land was passed. Not only this, many land portions, too, have been shown distributed among landless people.

As per sources, since the officials at the District Magistrate level keep changing, they do not get to know about the mess unless the issue is brought up before them.

A few employees, involved in making documentation regarding land, prepare fake papers with great care.

This enables the land mafia gain illegal control over the government land. A layman cannot pick up any loopholes in the documents.

Not only Raman, his predecessor, Dileep Jawalkar, also came to know of the illegal acquisition of government land by the land mafia in this fashion.

He had started a campaign to free the government land.

A senior clerk of the collectorate who got exposed in the matter was also suspended.

This way, many illegal acquisitions came to light. Now it is to be seen how the new District Magistrate, BVRC Purushottam, takes up this matter.
