New SSP Khurana promises full security to people of Doon
Says will instil fear of police in minds of criminals
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 7
The new Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kewal Khurana, today took charge from outgoing SSP Neeru Garg. Indian Police Service officer of the 2004 batch, Khurana has also served as Additional Superintendent of Police in Dehradun in the past.

Since the increasing crime rate is considered to be the reason behind this transfer, expectations from Khurana have increased. Khurana, too, gave a clear message to his subordinates to pull up their socks in this regard.

While talking to the media about the serious crime situation, he said: “The first priority of the police is to make the public, including women and traders, secure. It is the responsibility of the police to control crime.” He said it was wrong to say that new criminal gangs had sprung up, which were coming from other states and running away after committing crimes.

“Around 70 per cent of the crime is committed by old criminal gangs. Even about new gangs, the police has to find about their movement through intelligence network. The verification drive of tenants or outsiders living in the city will be intensified. Photos and other details of the verified criminals will be put on our website, which can easily be accessed by people,” he added.

On the matter of chain snatching, the police had been making the excuse that it could not keep a tab on culprits who emerged from nowhere and committed the crime. Khurana said: “The offenders must have the fear of the police in their minds. The police must build up such an image. It cannot ask people not to venture out in any specific place for the fear of criminals.”

While speaking on the acute traffic problems in the city, he said all the police personnel of police stations and police posts had to contribute in streamlining traffic. Those in-charge of police posts would no longer be allowed to be confined to paper work, and would now chip in to investigative work as well. He made it clear that 100 per cent utilisation of the whole workforce would be made to eradicate crime and streamline traffic in the city. He also assured of full cooperation and communication flow with the administration.

Citizens for Green Doon protests felling of trees
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 7
Activists of the Citizens for Green Doon today staged a protest against the felling of a big mango tree and other small trees on the Tilak Road campus of the Dehradun Divisional Forest Officer’s office here today.

The felling of trees flies in the face of green conservation efforts of the Forest Department.

Led by Dr Nitin Pandey, Chief Coordinator of the Citizens for Green Doon, the protesters questioned the logic behind the felling of trees at the DFO office as part of a beautification drive.

They asserted that while the Forest Department was coming up with a full-fledged office on Rajpur Road, there was no justification in felling the trees in the Dehradun division office, Tilak Road.

Pandey said such cutting of trees did not convey the right message to the people. Meanwhile, DFO, Dehradun, Sushant Patnaik said the felled mango tree had passed its fruit-bearing age. He added he had been instrumental in saving a large number of trees during his career as Forest Officer.

However, Pandey said if the felling of the trees was required for the beautification of the DFO’s office, all trees of the city could be felled on similar excuses. He added a bad example had been set by forest officers, who were duty-bound to protect trees, for others to emulate.

He said many forest officials had opposed the felling of the trees and were upset at the incident.

Hema Phulera, Himanshu Arora, Sonia Pandey, Laksha Mehta, Prasanna Kapoor, Devendra Shah, Priya Maheshwari, Shruti Kaushik, Bimal Raturi and Sanjay Bhatt were among those who participated in the protest.
