Amritsar
3-kg gold seized from flight: The Excise and Taxation Department on Wednesday seized gold jewellery weighing over 3 kg from the cargo of a private airlines. The gold, sent through a courier company, was recovered from a Mumbai-Amritsar flight. Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner PS Randhawa (in pic) said the jewellery comprised 31 articles, including rings, necklaces, bracelets and ear rings. He said it seemed to be a case of tax evasion.

BBMB holds blood donation camp
: A blood donation camp was organised by the Bhakra Beas Management Board, Chandigarh, on Wednesday in association with a team from the Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGI, to commemorate the death anniversary of late Maj-Gen BN Kumar, a former chairman of the board. The camp was inaugurated by AB Agrawal, chairman, BBMB. As many as 104 officials donated blood.

Protest against ‘conversion’
: Brick-kiln owners and Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists on Wednesday staged a dharna in Moonak, alleging that the local administration was supporting an NGO that was luring kiln workers to convert to Christianity. Brick-kiln Owners Association's president Prem Kumar said the NGO comprised a foreigner and three persons from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Moonak SDM Subhash Chander claimed that it was not a case of conversion.

Radiation awareness programme: The Indian Association of Radiological Technologists, a national body of radiological technologists in India, organised a radiation awareness programme to mark World Radiography Day. Speakers delivered talks on benefits and hazards of radiation. Dr Laxmi Kant Tewari, National Council member, and organising secretary of CMEIART-2012, emphasised that exposure to X-ray and CT scans should be justified and explained to patients.

Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik called on Governor NN Vohra at Raj Bhavan here today. The Governor and the minister discussed matters related to the growth of institutions of higher education in the state and the need for effective implementation of various schemes for enhancing the employability of youth through vocational orientation.
