Jethmalani adamant; RSS ideologue Gurumurthy stands by Gadkari
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 7
Continuing his tirade against the Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari, senior party member and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Jethmalani today insisted he will carry on with his fight after the party collectively expressed unstinted support to its beleaguered chief.

A day after the BJP core group absolved Gadkari of any legal or moral wrongdoing, the Rajya Sabha MP emphasised he was not quitting the party and promised to continue his fight even if it meant going it alone. By raising the issue of allegedly dubious funding of companies owned by Gadkari yesterday, Jethmalani stoked a controversy that forced the party core group to get into a huddle late evening and come out with a statement.

On his part, Gurumurthy, an RSS ideologue and financial analyst, today said the Nagpur group (of companies) had given it in writing to financial institutions that they owned the companies. He said by stating this now, these companies were not obliging Gadkari. The reference to Nagpur companies apparently comes in the context of Purti power and sugar group, about whose funding pattern questions have been raised.

“So I am convinced that Nitin (Gadkari) has legally nothing to do with the 14 companies in question. Morally, he is clear because Nagpur (companies) has owned them in 2003-04. I have done in Nitin’s case what I would have done in any case I write on. I will never write on business matters unless I verify facts,” Gurumurthy said on microblogging site Twitter.

The clarification came after the BJP said last night that Gurumurthy had perused the documents pertaining to the companies and briefed the party leaders before the joint statement supporting the BJP chief was issued.

Gadkari, handpicked by the RSS in 2009 to head the party, is scheduled to get a second term but in the wake of the controversy, but such a move may affect the BJP’s credibility at a time when it is targeting the UPA on corruption. As for now, the BJP chief seems to have survived the attack, with the RSS backing.

Swamy: Will challenge EC decision in court

New Delhi, November 7
Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy today decided to move court challenging the Election Commission’s decision rejecting his petition for derecognition of Congress.

He shot off a letter to the commission a day after it dismissed his petition for derecognition of Congress on the ground that the party violated laws by providing a Rs 90 crore loan to Associates Journals which ran the now-defunct National Herald newspaper.

Maintaining that he was not given an opportunity to present his case from a legal point of view, he said Election Commission must realise that it has not only to dispense justice as a tribunal but they must be seen to have dispensed justice. — PTI

IMG wants eight coal blocks de-allocated

New Delhi, November 7
Coming down hard on the public sector undertakings (PSUs) which have not been developing the coal blocks allocated to them, the Inter Ministerial Group (IMG) today recommended de-allocation of eight blocks allotted to the state-owned companies.

The recommendation of action against the PSUs came after the IMG, headed by Additional Secretary, Coal, Zohra Chatterjee, went through the presentations made by the PSUs in 19 cases.

The IMG, which had earlier this month reviewed 33 cases of coal blocks not being developed by the PSUs, would take up rest of the 14 cases after Divali.

In two other cases, it has recommended deduction of the bank guarantees provided by the PSUs and imposition of bank guarantees in six other cases.

The panel had earlier recommended de-allocation of 13 mines to private firms which has already been accepted by the government.

Among the blocks recommended for de-allocation are Mandakini, Utkal-D and Touli-Paharpur.

Utkal-D coal block in Odisha was allotted to Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) in December 2003 while Mandakini block was given to Assam Mineral Development Corporation.

The Shankarpur/Bhatgaon II & extension block in Chhattisgarh allotted to Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation in 2007 has also been recommended for de-allocation.

The block in Bisrampur coalfields has a geological reserve of 80 million tonnes.

The decision to de-allocate the blocks followed marathon meetings on November 5 and 6 by the IMG, which has so far reviewed 19 out of 33 cases.

The government had accepted the IMG’s recommendations for de-allocation of 13 mines and deduction of bank guarantees of 14 allottees in the private sector.
