PM spells out government initiatives in health sector
New Delhi, November 3Enhancing allocation for health in the 12th Five Year Plan, opening of more institutes on the lines of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, greater attention to medical education and plans to distribute free generic drugs in public hospitals are some of the major initiatives of the Union government, said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today.
He was addressing a gathering during the foundation stone laying ceremony of redevelopment of nearly 100-year-old Lady Hardinge Medical College here. Underlining a significant three-point drop in the infant mortality rate (IMR) in the country, Dr Singh hoped the same energy and commitment that was brought to eradicate polio from India would be brought in to reduce the IMR further. “The old adage about health being wealth is truer than ever before. The health indicators of our nation have a great bearing on our overall social and economic well-being. I am therefore very happy to note five heartening developments in the field of healthcare in recent years in our country,” the Prime Minister said. Allocation for health has been enchanced threefold in the 12th Five Year Plan as compared to the 11th Plan. In addition, factors such as nutrition, safe drinking water, sanitation, housing and education, particularly education of the girl child, are increasingly being underlined as the social determinants of health, he said flagging the first achievement. Second, six AIIMS-type institutions of excellence had been opened coupled with 30 per cent increase in the number of MMBS seats, 50 per cent in postgraduate seats, and sanctioning of 269 new nursing schools mostly in remote and underserved districts to overcome the shortage of nurses and auxiliary nurse midwives, he said. To give a boost to paramedical education and scale up the availability of paramedics, the government was setting up a National Institute of Paramedical Sciences in Delhi and eight Regional Institutes of Paramedical Sciences at Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Patna and Aurangabad. A major urban health initiative would be launched in the 12th Five Year Plan to focus on the specific health issues of the urban poor, which, he said, was the third achievement, while the fourth was a drop in the IMR. “Finally, I am happy to note that free generic drugs will be made available to people through all public hospitals in our country. This will help reduce the out of pocket expenditure of the poor on health across the country,” Dr Singh said.

UP withdraws cases against farmers
Lucknow, November 3 In May 2011 during the Mayawati regime, there was a prolonged farmers’ agitation in the twin villagers led by Sarvdaliya Kisan Sangharsh Samiti head Manveer Singh Tewatia. The farmers were demanding better compensation for their acquired land. There was a violent showdown between the police and the farmers on May 7 causing the death of four persons, including two constables. Hundreds of cases had been registered against the farmers, mostly at Dankaur police station. Tewatia had been booked under the NSA and was absconding since then. The others named in the FIRs included Premveer, Kale Singh, Gaje Singh, Kiranpal and Dhan Singh among others. During his cycle yatra to the area while campaigning for the 2012 Assembly polls, Akhilesh had promised to withdraw the fake cases against the farmers of Bhatta Parsaul who were protesting the
land acquisition by the state for the Yamuna Expressway project. According to a state government press release, the cases against the farmers were being withdrawn after examination of evidence in various cases revealed that they had indeed been framed for protesting against the state government.

Big fat wedding lands Andhra minister in trouble
Hyderabad, November 3 The controversial minister, who is also the state Congress president, allegedly misused his authority and public funds for the bash last night that saw a star-studded guest line-up. What raised eyebrows in political circles was the order issued by the Transport Department to requisition 300 private taxis to ferry men and material as part of the wedding preparations. Around 80,000 guests were invited to the bash. It was alleged that the state ministers, who were put up at a star hotel in Vishakhapatnam close to the wedding venue, held review meetings only to make the trip official. Nearly 700 constables, 35 DSPs and 120 SHOs were deployed to ensure that the wedding went off smoothly.
