UT’s no to DANICS cadre officers

The UT Administration is not keen on appointing officers from Delhi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Services (DANICS) on posts at present held by the Haryana Civil Services (HCS) and Punjab Civil Services (PCS) officers.

More heads to roll in booth scam

More heads are set to roll in the booth scam. The UT Estate Office has found that a number of beneficiaries, who have been allotted booths in the Sector-41 Krishna Market, have rented them out in violation of the allotment rules.

Learning no lessons from major fire incidents at the Sector-22 market in which the firemen had to struggle through a maze of mangled electricity wires and haphazardly constructed partitions, the UT’s Estate Office and the MC’s Fire Department are yet to wake from slumber and take any action against the violators.

Work on bridge over Kurali level crossing to begin soon, says MLA
Mohali, November 3
To facilitate the local people, an over bridge or underpass would be constructed on the level crossing no. C-31 in Kurali very soon. MLA from Kharar constituency and former Punjab Minister Jagmohan Singh Kang made this announcement here today.

Relatives, friends pay tribute to Jaspal Bhatti

People today paid tribute to late comedian and satirist Jaspal Bhatti during a bhog ceremony at Sector 34. Family members and fellow artistes gathered to pay honour the late comedian. His close friends remembered his contribution during the ceremony.

Monika’s parents hold protest
Chandigarh, November 3
Parents of computer teacher Monika Goyal (32), who died under mysterious circumstances last month, protested outside the UT district court complex when athe deceased’s in-laws were being produced in the courts on Saturday. Later, her in-laws later sent to judicial remand.

Divali gift for UT staff
Chandigarh, November 3
The Chandigarh Administration today hiked the dearness allowance (DA) for its employees by 7 per cent. The move will benefit around 20,000 UT employees. The hike will be effective from July 1, this year, and the employees will be entitled to receive arrears.

Spurious sweets destroyed

Officials of the UT Health Department along with officials of district administration today conducted surprise checking at sweet shops in Sectors 29, 30, 36 and Colony No 4. They destroyed unhygienic sweets during the raid.

Schools rush for minority status
Chandigarh, November 3

As the next academic session draws near, schools in Chandigarh are rushing to apply for the minority status to avoid violation of provisions under the RTE Act. Four city schools have applied for the minority status before the six-member panel, which was recently constituted by the Education Department for schools seeking minority status.

Shooting films on PU campus to cost more

Shooting for films and songs on Panjab University campus is going to be costlier. The PU authorities have framed a policy for shooting films on campus. A single day shoot now going to cost Rs 25,000, which would be preferably allowed on non-working days only to ensure studies are not disrupted.

The district police has arrested five drug peddlers, who were involved in the sale of drugs for a long time and four thieves, who used to steal iron and scrap from the godowns.

Police files plea to withdraw FIR
Panchkula, November 3
In a curious development in the Mehak case, the Panchkula police has requested a local court to accept the cancellation of the FIR lodged against the in-laws of the victim on the plea that she had extra-marital relations and that she had committed suicide.

The Panchkula police today arrested man, who had alleged attempted to rape a woman this August. The woman was married to a Ludhiana-based industrialist.

In the infamous kidney scam, that rocked the city last December, the local police has arrested two more accused, Sandeep Goyal and his wife Archna Goyal, from Panipat today.

Car-borne youths snatch chain

Four car-borne youths, reportedly, snatched a gold chain from a woman in Sector 22 here yesterday. The police said that Surinder Kaur, a resident of Sector 49, complained that four unknown youths travelling in a car snatched her gold chain at Sector 22 market.

A 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after setting herself ablaze at Kaimbwala village. The victim, who was reportedly harassed by her husband, succumbed to her injuries at the PGI today.

Youth held with 150 gm charas
Panchkula, November 3
In another case of drug peddling, the Panchkula police has nabbed a youth and seized 150 gm of charas this morning. The accused, identified as Ravinder, alias Ravi, was caught by the police at the road diving Sectors 14 and 19.

Man hit by vehicle, dies
Mohali, November 3
A 50-year-old man was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle at the Focal Point Industrial Area road, Phase IX, here last night. The victim was identified as Baljinder Singh, aka Vijay.
