Dehradun, November 12
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kewal Khurana today flagged off a mini truck carrying banners of public awareness related to traffic regulations and precautions regarding pick-pockets, thefts, burglaries and other crimes a day before Deepawali.

Khurana said the truck was a mobile police station which would not only circulate messages and spread awareness among people regarding traffic and crimes throughout the length and breadth of the city but would also check on the traffic/police personnel or patrolling vehicles which had been put on duty at various places in the city.

These police personnel would be served mini mineral water bottles and glucose biscuits kept in the truck.

A team of one sub-inspector and six constables who would be present in the mini truck would keep an eye on suspicious elements and attend to public complaints with regard to crime. Khurana said the mini truck would remain mobile. The traffic messages were in connection with prohibition of helmetless driving, triple riding, over-speeding, jumping red lights, parking in no-parking zones etc.

In other messages, the public was advised to inform the police stations regarding their tenants or outsiders in the area. They were advised to inform the police before leaving homes for long durations.

Meanwhile, Khurana also took another initiative in the direction of improving traffic in the city by removing beggars who were roaming near traffic lights. He passed strict instructions to the traffic police not to allow the beggars to move around the traffic lights and impede the traffic flow.

He also inspected the markets of the city to check on the effective compliance of his instructions regarding traffic, security and anti-encroachment. The stringent policing seemed working wonders on the city roads. Meanwhile, strictness in streamlining traffic on city roads ever since

Director General of Police Satyavrat Bansal held a meeting with the SSP and other fellow officers a few days ago is working wonders.

The ever congested Paltan and Dhamawala Bazaars appeared spacious. The vehicles were parked on sides of the roads. Police personnel were stationed outside jewellery shops. The entire Kotwali staff seemed doing patrolling throughout the stretch of the market. The traffic police was sounding the public through loudspeakers against parking of vehicles in the Clock Tower area. Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, November 12
The hill town of Mussoorie, better known as “Queen of Hills,” has been decorated just like a newly-wedded bride, and is ready to welcome tourists and others alike for the Divali festivities.

Hotels, shops and restaurants were decorated with ornamental Chinese lights, while some residents preferred to light their houses using traditional lamps and candles to usher in the Festival of Lights.

The president of the Mussoorie Hotels Association, Rajat Agarwal, informed The Tribune that the shopkeepers themselves had decorated the markets at Landour, Kulri and Library Bazaar and the Mussoorie Traders' Association had no role in it.

The GM of Jay Pee Residency, the only rated hotel in Mussoorie, Anil Sharma, said that they had decorated the hotel with flowers and ornamental lights for the festival.

He also informed that as the occupancy was slow on Divali and winter was setting in, they had created special packages for the tourists at discounted rates. The packages of Green Breeze and Green Castle were also on the lower side considering the festive season. Hotel Green Breeze is offering packages from Oct 5 to Dec 20 at the rate of Rs 2009-Rs 14,999 for different rooms.

Spokesperson of the Mussoorie Hotel Association Sandeep Sahni said that the occupancy in most of the hotels was on the lower side as the tourists preferred to enjoy Divali with their families in their respective towns. However, Divali also heralds the announcement of the winter package at much discounted rates, thus making it the best time of the year to visit Mussoorie.

The students from various schools also had a day out and were seen buying crackers and sweets from shops in the town today. Environmentalists greeting the people on Divali also made an appeal to make this year’s festival an eco-friendly and pollution-free one.

Verification of works under MGNREGS soon
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 12
The Rural Development Department is going to undertake an on-the-spot inspection of all works carried under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Chakrata of Dehradun district and Haridwar.

“The assessment of the works was carried out by our officers but these did not match with the statements provided by gram pradhans. We will be shortly carrying out the physical verification of the works. In the districts of Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar, assessments are already underway,” said Vinod Fonia, Secretary, Rural Development.

For ushering in greater transparency and better monitoring of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, a separate unit of audit of accounts and social audit will be created in the state.

In the latest directive from the Central Government, the auditing units will be entrusted with the task of undertaking social and accounts audits twice a year.

“We were already carrying out social audits of the MGNREGS.Now we will we have to set up a separate entity that will be part of the state unit and recruit field staff within the next six months. The permanent institutional arrangement will further help us plug leakages,” said Vinod Fonia.

Officials say the government has three options to choose from for creating an audit of accounts and social audit unit. The government can either go for the existing Director, Local Fund Audit, that is under the Finance Department, hire any empanelled chartered accountant firm or go for other equivalent arrangement that it deems fit.
