Mussoorie all set to have world-class sports stadium
Secretary visits the site at Bhilaru
Ajay Ramola

Mussoorie, November 26
The sports lovers in the town had something to cheer about when their hopes of a world class sports stadium construction in the Bhilaru area of Mussoorie received a boost with the maiden survey visit of the Uttarakhand sports secretary today.

Uttarakhand sports secretary Ajay Pradyot, accompanied by Municipal Council president OP Uniyal and several ward members surveyed the proposed site for the sports stadium at Bhilaru on the Kempty fall road today. The sports secretary also visited one more site at the spring road which is being proposed as an ice-rink here. The cricket stadium to be built at Bhilaru on the Kempty road was among one of the announcements made by several chief ministers in the past.

The stadium project had been returned by the Urban Development Department to the Sports Department without any clearance, citing the shortage of funds. Since then the project had been lying dormant due to a controversy between the Forest Department and the Mussoorie Municipal Council over the land for the project but with the survey done today by Ajay Pradyot has raised the hopes of construction of a world class stadium manifold.

The sports secretary said he had surveyed the proposed project at Bhilaru in detail and the area, which is spread across an area of around 5 acres, was fit for at least two stadiums, one for cricket and another stadium for either hockey or football.

He said the absence of trees in the area would facilitate in getting forest clearance. He directed the officials to make the minute of the exercise conducting today and send it to the sports ministry for further action. Following that, the ministry after drafting the proposal would send it Mussoorie Municipal Council (MC) so that the land which falls under the purview of MC is easily transferred to the sports ministry and the project could be taken forward from here without any hindrance.

Ajay Pradyot said the government was concerned about the well being of the sportspersons and had initiated several schemes. The government has constituted a sports policy where it has decided to award the players from Uttarakhand excelling in sports at the national and the international-levels. He said the government was also planning to felicitate the veteran and the disabled sportspersons from the state in the near future.

Pradyot further said the government was promoting the rural sports in the state in a big way and as a result, the state has won around 150 medals in the past three years.

The Municipal Council president said with the maiden visit of the sports secretary, hopefully all the bottlenecks would be removed for the world class stadium at Bhilaru and an ice-rink at the Spring road would make the town an important sports tourism destination of the state.

He thanked the sports secretary for showing keen interest in the project and said the MC, after receiving the proposal, would initiate the land transfer exercise for the sports stadium to the sports ministry in the larger interest of the town. He hoped that the sportspersons from the town would be given due prominence after the completion of the project.

Madan Mohan Tayal

Dehradun, November 26
Madan Mohan Tayal, doyen of Doon industrialists, died this morning at his residence. He was 92 and had been bedridden for some time. He is survived by his wife, Prabha, a son and three daughters.

Tayal had been a president of the Doon Citizens Council for tenures more than anyone else. In recognition of his long association with the council and his dedication and devotion to its cause, the Doon Citizens Council had unanimously conferred on him the title of ‘President Emeritus’ two years ago. He was also the president of Dehradun Club Ltd from 1967-69. Tayal was a devoted Rotarian and was the president of Rotary Club, Lucknow, before he moved base to Dehradun. He was also the founder president of the Doon Chamber of Commerce.

However, Tayal’s main contribution was to give the then sleepy Dehradun an industrial look. The year 1959 was a turning point both for Tayal and the town. He set up the town’s first modern industry, a textile mill, named after his only son, Amitabh. It was set up in Prem Nagar, a refugee township, and provided employment to hundreds of refugees.

Born in Hisar, Haryana, in a family of landlords, he completed his high school there. Later, he graduated from St Stephen’s College, Delhi. It was there that he learnt the art of networking and influencing people and made many friends. His earlier business ventures were in Haryana.

In 1950, he shifted to Allahabad to ensure better education for his daughter and set up Allahabad Law Journal Co Ltd. that published the reputed Allahabad Law Journal. He was instrumental in promoting Eastern UP Chamber of Commerce which eventually promoted Naini Industrial Estate that was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi.

Several messages condoling on his death have come in. The first Chief Minister of the state Nityanand Swami paid rich tributes to Tayal’s qualities of head and heart and said he was a good friend. His son lit his pyre.
