Dera congregation: Politics at play?

Bathinda, October 28
With the Lok Sabha elections drawing nearer, Dera politics in the Malwa region of Punjab has again started mounting with more than 50,000 men, women and children from here today reaching Sirsa to obtain the blessings of the controversial Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

A "roob-ru" programme will be held tonight in the cricket stadium where the Dera chief would answer to questions of the Premis (the Dera followers).

Former local Congress MLA Harminder Singh Jassi, who for the first time lost to Saroop Chand Singla of the ruling SAD, has reportedly organised the face-to-face meeting of the Premis from Bathinda with the Dera chief with whom he is closely related.

Jassi, who was also on his way to Sirsa, told the TNS over the telephone that Premis from 7 of the 9 blocks of Bathinda district were participating in this evening's "satsang". More than 150 bus loads of Premis have already reached Sirsa. The left out blocks were Talwandi Sabo and Salabatpura.

Today's congregation was specially arranged for the followers of Bathinda, he added.

The Premis were for the past few days making a door-to-door contact in the town to carry to Sirsa the people who were desirous of becoming the followers of Dera.

More than 140 Premis here had earlier this week registered their lands in the name of the Dera.

The Sirsa Dera enjoys a sizeable following in the Malwa region and it plays an important role in the elections. Leaders of the SAD, Congress and other parties have been making rounds of the Dera, particularly during the elections, to seek the blessings of Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

However, Jassi lost the last assembly election despite the support of the Dera that had raised doubts about its dwindling influence in the area. The current exercise is considered as his effort to stage a comeback in the Lok Sabha elections in case he is given the Congress ticket.
