Law makers or breakers!
Jalandhar, October 1 Be it any roundabout, intersection, dividers of roads, markets or any prominent building in the city, the hoardings with congratulatory messages for Mayor Sunil Jyoti and Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Bhatia can be easily spotted. What is even more ironical is that such huge hoardings have even been erected right at the entrance of the Municipal Corporation (MC) office on the PNB Chowk side, from where all officials and VIPs enter the premises. While a few of Jyoti’s hoardings have been put up at designated places atop unipoles, all of those meant for Bhatia have been put up illegally. “Reading the newspapers daily, we all know that these people have been appointed. Where is the need to have hoardings? These hoardings have only marred the beauty of the entire city. Besides, it will have negative repercussions as people would develop the courage and confidence to put up more hoardings at non-designated sites,” opined Rupinder Kaur, a teacher. Even more interesting are the epithets used for eulogy in the hoardings. Hoardings in favour of Bhatia have called him "Itehaas Purkh" (historical figure) perhaps for getting elected unopposed and retaining the post despite controversies. Asked about the same, Jyoti said, “We have a high court order also on this. We will soon get all these removed.” Bhatia, Oberoi take charge Unlike previous terms, the politicians have made charge-taking a new occasion to earn political mileage. Five days after their formal appointment, Kamaljit Bhatia and Arvinder Kaur Oberoi formally came to the MC office accompanied by party bigwigs and hundreds of supporters. Both were welcomed with garlands and bouquets and occupied their rooms in the presence of Local Bodies Minister Bhagat Chunni Lal, CPS KD Bhandari and former ministers Sewa Singh Sekhwan and Manoranjan Kalia. Jyoti, too, had occupied his chair in a similar fashion, a day after his appointment on the post. |
PITK sans medical facility, hostel, web portal
Jalandhar, October 1 Even as the college, which started last year, has good infrastructure in terms of hi-fi furniture, projectors in classrooms, laboratories with the latest computer systems, wi-fi connection, table tennis room, gym, canteen and bus service for transport facility, it does not have any provision for medical facility, including a sick room, doctor or an ambulance, to deal with any emergency situation as is mandatory as per the AICTE norms. Students of the college said they realised the need for such a facility when a student fell unconscious on the campus about two weeks back. “Since the college is situated midway between Kapurthala and Jalandhar on the highway with not much development around, there are no doctors available to respond immediately. Soon after the incident, we gave a representation on the matter to our authorities, who have given an assurance on making a requisite provision,” they said. The PTU had started the college last year with 32 admissions in the M.Tech course, but the strength has increased to 166 this year for M.Tech as well as MBA courses. The PITK does not even have a hostel of its own. An arrangement has been made to accommodate students from far-flung areas in the hostels of KMV College and Doaba College and PG centres. The students, however, have been provided with a bus facility to and from the campuses where their hostels are located. The college till date does not have its official website for putting information regarding facilities or details regarding staff and students admitted, as has been made mandatory by the AICTE. There only is a one-page link available regarding the college through the university’s official website www.ptu.acin, which, too, mentions only the admission details. As per an AICTE stricture, it is compulsory for all colleges to have a web portal with a column "Mandatory disclosure" under a set format with details of the qualification of the entire faculty along with their photographs, the details of the society or management governing the colleges with their designations and addresses and infrastructure available in each department. The basic idea behind the rule is to have self-assessment and to make it known to the students and their parents ahead of the admission, the minutest details of the college. Public relations officer (PRO) of PTU Rajneesh Sharma, when contacted, said the web portal was ready and would be formally launched day after. Regarding on-the-campus hostel, he said a university committee had decided in the interest of the nearly 150 hostellers to hire hostels outside campus so that they could enjoy market and other provisions. It has also proven economical for the students, he claimed. “We have two pharmacy lecturers for ready help. They are maintaining a medical kit. We have also taken three doctors at Jalandhar on the university’s panel,” he added. |

Sarpanch killed in accident
Nakodar, October 1 According to the police, the sarpanch, Gurdeep Singh (29), died when the motorcycle he was riding on rammed into a tree. Even the deceased's relatives have ruled out any foul play behind his death. Investigating officer Ram Singh said Gurdeep Singh had gone to meet his sister at Budi village, near Mehatpur, two days ago and last night he was returning home when the tragedy struck. Gurdeep Singh sustained serious head injuries and died of that. |

Only 40 of 340 complaints against fake travel agents turn into cases
Jalandhar, October 1 Data collected from the Commissionerate office revealed that so far the city police had received as many as 340 complaints. Of these, 289 were received by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the city police, while the remaining 51 complaints were received by various police stations of the city. Out of the total 340 complaints, only 40 were converted into First Information Reports (FIRs) in which cases under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC were registered against fake travel agents and many of them were arrested and sent to jail. About converting a very small number of complaints into FIRs, senior police officials feel that investigations into travel or immigration frauds always take time as police has to verify complaints thoroughly. Of the total FIRs, 11 cases were registered in May followed by six each in March, June, July and August, four in April and one in January. In February, the police did not register even a single case of immigration fraud. Excluding the complaints received by the EOW, the Police Division No. 7 received the maximum 16 complaints, followed by six at Rama Mandi police station, five each at New Baradari, Sadar and Division No. 1 police stations, four each at Division No. 5 and 6, one each at Division No. 3 and 4, Cantonment and Basti Bawa Khel police stations. Interestingly, the Division No. 2 police station did not receive even a single complaint of immigration fraud this year. DCP Sarabjit Singh said instructions had been issued to all the police stations to thoroughly investigate all the complaints registered against fake travel agents to prevent victimisation of foreign aspirants. |
More facilities needed at Old Age Home
Jalandhar, October 1 One of the reasons is the lack of compatibility between the new and the previous generation, as the concept of joint family is fast fading away from our society. Due to this, need for old age home was felt and the Red Cross Hospital Welfare Section set up an Old Age Home (OAH) in Jalandhar about six years ago. A team of The Tribune visited the OAH on World Elders Day on Monday. Located at Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, the OAH has a dormitory to provide shelter and food to 20 male elders but only five are staying here as neither sick nor female elders are provided shelter here, says Ranjana Bansal, secretary of the Red Cross Hospital Welfare Section.
Mahohar Lal (80), who owned a hand-tool industry in the prime of his age, is one of the five elders at the OAH. Living here for the past more than three years, Lal had never thought that he has to spend the last days of his live in loneliness. Following the death of his life-partner, he started feeling lonely at home despite having two sons. “Taunts hurled at him by his grandchildren forced him to start living at the OAH,” he said. Lal says his married son, Anil, and unmarried son, Neeraj, come here to take him back but he prefers to stay here. The former industrialist has been suffering from stomach ailment for the past over a fortnight but there is not medical facility. He is taking medicines from a private doctor by spending money from his pocket. Lal and the two other elders, Surendra Kumar (67) and Manohar Singh (55) say, “No medical facilities are provided here. In case of illness, we have to spend from our own pockets to get medicine.” Both Surendra and Manohar are unmarried and they don’t have anyone to look after them. Each of the elders is paying Rs 700 per month for the shelter and food at the OAH. Manohar Singh complains about the poor quality of food especially the curd provided to them at breakfast and vegetables during lunch and dinner. He says he buys butter and food from a dhaba. Ranjana Bansal, secretary, Red Cross Hospital Welfare Section, said, “Earlier, we used to provide shelter to women in a separate dormitory but they were found to be trouble makers over trivial issues. Also, they kept on fighting with each other. We are thinking of providing shelter to female elders also. Elders are provided the facilities of library and TV. |
In-laws booked for woman's death
Jalandhar, October 1 The deceased was identified as Anu Sharma (24). She was cremated here on Sunday evening. Anu Sharma's father Om Parkash told the police that Anu got married to Suresh, alias Rinku, resident of Judala village, near Karnal. Soon after the marriage, Anu's mother-in-law started torturing her for dowry and many a times she was even thrashed by her in-laws. Om Parkash alleged that a few days ago his daughter had been forcibly sent back to her parental home to bring Rs 5 lakh. "When my daughter could not able to fulfil their (in-laws) dowry demands, she was beaten up, which caused her death," Anu's father said. Family members revealed that the deceased was six-month pregnant. The police said the cause of death was still not clear and only after the arrival of the postmortem report, further legal proceedings would be initiated. Minor girl found
