Firm, labourers in patch-up mode
Ludhiana, October 1
Day after the incident in which one worker was killed and two others were injured after the scaffolding on the eighth floor of Bharti Pavilion Mall near Fountain Chowk collapsed, the company officials and the labour leaders were in a patch-up mode. The matter was reportedly settled for a compensation of Rs 3 lakh.

City Mayor ‘welcomes’ latecomer MC staff

The latecomer staff of the Zone-A office of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation got an “unpleasant surprise” this morning when they were greeted by Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria himself. Interestingly, the newly elected Mayor, who is known for his clean and non-controversial image, sat at the office entry and “welcomed” all the latecomers.

‘Tantrik’ murders cousin to hide his affair
Ludhiana, October 1
In yet another case of killing by ‘tantrik’, a 27- year- old youth stabbed his cousin to death and threw his body into the Sirhind Branch Canal, near Dehlon. The victim had visited his ‘tantrik’ cousin to find a cure to his falling business.

Two commit suicide in city
Ludhiana, October 1
Two cases of suicide were reported in the city today. In the first incident, Rakesh, a resident of the Jamalpur area, who was reportedly suffering from depression, allegedly killed himself by slitting his throat.

A proposed residential scheme coming up on 3.03 acres still remains on paper even after 13 years of its conception, thanks to a lackadaisical attitude of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) authorities towards encroachments on a major chunk of the prime land in Model Town Extension Part I.

9 test positive for dengue
Ludhiana, October 1
Nine more patients have tested positive for dengue. According to the District Epidemiologist, Dr Puneet Juneja, four patients are from Ludhiana, two from Ferozepur, one from Hoshiarpur and one each from Jalandhar and Mansa. He added a total of 55 dengue cases had been reported in Ludhiana this season. — TNS

Procurement begins, 16 lakh tonne of paddy expected in market
Ludhiana, October 1
Nearly 16 lakh tonne of paddy is expected to arrive in the market with the procurement process starting today. The Administration has made arrangements to facilitate the process, for which 103 purchase centres have been set up.

Ban on mining leaves brick-kiln owners worried

Perturbed over the hike in VAT and imposition of a ban on mining, brick-kiln owners today held a state-level meeting in Ludhiana. During the meeting, the members decided to meet the Chief Minister in a day or two and make him acquaint with their problems. They said they would stage protests if their problems were not addressed.

Finally, PAU to get new roads

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is all set to get new roads on the campus. The work of recarpeting of the roads finally started yesterday. after the Punjab Works Department released Rs 2 crore. PAU has received Rs 2 crore from the Punjab Works Department that has released a fund for this purpose after seven years.

Good Samaritans: For the love of a cause
Ludhiana, October 1
On the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, a number of students of Punjab Agricultural University who regularly donate blood got together on the PAU campus. They were not carrying any records that could tell how many lives they had saved by voluntarily donating blood time and again, but their dedication was evident through the enthusiasm they showed.

DMCH honours blood donors

The Department of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) celebrated National Voluntary Blood Donation Day by honouring more than 80 social organisations, involved in organising blood donation camps, as well faculty members of the medical college, who have been regularly donating blood for the last several years.
