First-ever ethnic Sikh conference gets under way
Srinagar, August 17 Demands for a fresh impartial probe into the Chattisinghpora massacre of 2000, in which 35 Sikhs were gunned down, and grant of minority status to the Sikh community dominated the proceedings of the seminar. All-Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina presented the list of demands, including issuance of state subject certificates, grant of minority status to Sikhs, compensation for the losses incurred in rural areas over the past two decades, employment package for educated Sikh youth, scholarship and admission to Sikh youth in technical and non-technical colleges on par with migrants, fresh probe into Chattisinghpora massacre and extension of Anand Marriage Act to the state. He said the conference had been organised to provide a platform for the entire Sikh community and also to develop a consensus so that they could present their demands in a vociferous manner. All-India Sikh Student Federation president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad regretted the failure of the state government to meet the demands of the Sikhs. On the recent gunning down of Sikhs in the US, he said: “The cases of mistaken-identity killings in which many Sikhs lost their lives was nothing but a genocide of the minority community living there.” Shromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee secretary Dilmag Singh said the colleges run by the committee would provide free admission to meritorious students of the state. The APSCC intends to issue a white paper on the issues faced by the community that would be presented to the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). |

Dukhtaran protests killing of Muslims in Myanmar
Srinagar, August 17 The protest march was led by DeM chief Asiya Andrabi. Asiya appealed to the world to raise their voice against the massacre in Myanmar as the Muslim nations were silent over these killings. "It is shocking that Muslim nations are silent over the massacre. The rulers of the Muslim countries have become agents of the West and prefer to remain silent on issues faced by the Muslim community,” she said. The DeM chief criticised the alleged killing of Muslims in Assam. She offered shelter to the refugees of Assam. "Let them come to Kashmir, we will provide them shelter," she said. |

Omar never invited separatists for talks: NC
Srinagar, August 17 “Chief Minister Omar Abdullah never invited the separatists for talks but advised them to achieve prosperity and progress in the state, as it is the only way for a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue. Issuing irrelevant statements proves that they probably have not read the statement clearly,” said an NC spokesperson. The NC statement was issued in an apparent reaction to hardline Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani who had claimed that Omar was nobody to invite them for talks and was merely a puppet of New Delhi. Geelani had reacted a day after Omar’s Independence Day speech while adding that the Chief Minister should not interfere in the matter. The statement quoted the Chief Minister saying: “Let us achieve through dialogue what you could not achieve with guns - a peaceful, prosperous J&K. Let us come forward and talk for achieving a breakthrough on table which gun could not deliver in 20 years.” He said: “This not only proves that the separatists are scared to come on the negotiating table but also that they have no love left for the people”. |

Women footballers seek more sporting activities
Jammu, August 17 Sources said that women footballers were not happy with the working of the JKFA and hence they were blaming the authorities for step-motherly treatment meted out to them. While talking to The Tribune, many female footballers expressed resentment over the negligent attitude of the association to uplift the standard of the game in J&K. “The JKFA is taking keen interest in promoting the game among men not only by conducting various tournaments but by hosting premier football championships such as Santosh Trophy, Federation Cup,” said one of the woman footballers. “As far as women football is concerned, the authorities are least bothered about us. The association is not even taking an initiative to organise a coaching camp not to talk of conducting tournaments,” she added. “Despite being such a popular sport in the state, the JKFA has not not shown much interest to revive the game,” said another woman footballer. She said when Santosh Trophy was hosted by the state in 2008, it provided us a ray of hope that JKFA will do something to uplift the standard of women football but that did not happen,” the player maintained. Sources claimed the continuous blame game between the J&K State Sports Council and the JKFA has been the major cause behind the pathetic state of affairs of women football. Zameer Ahmad Thakur, JKFA president, said, “There is no doubt that women football is in dire strait in J&K but we are now doing our level best to make the situation better. Recently, the J&K State Sports Council had organised a coaching camp for women which is a welcome sign.” “JKFA also plans to approach JKP for promoting women football in the Valley. Unfortunately, there is not much support from J&K State Sports Council because due to paucity of funds, the JKFA has not been able to run its activities in a smooth manner,” JKFA president said. |

Tourist resorts look for revival
Anantnag, August 17 These spots are known for camping sites, meadows, freshwater springs, fish farms, wildlife sanctuary and lush green environs. The tourism potential of these picturesque spots, dotting south Kashmir, is vast but remains untapped. These spots are located along the Anantnag-Kishtwar road (National Highway-1B). “These places can not only generate revenue for the state but also provide employment opportunities to the local youth,” said Dr Adil, a resident of the Kokernag area. The residents say in the late 80s and early 90s, these spots, particularly Kokernag, remained abuzz throughout the summer with tourist activity but the callous approach of the authorities had taken its toll on the tourism activity there. “Local people don’t want the area to go the Pahalgam way. We want proper infrastructure without causing any harm to the environment,” said Mehrajuddin Khanday, a Kokernag resident. The villages adjoining these spots can be beautified so that people can accommodate tourists in “home guest houses” instead of building big concrete hotels, they add. The development work has been taken over by the Kokernag Development Authority but the work is going on at a snail’s pace, hampering the activities that these places have to offer. “If the Anantnag-Sinthan-Kishtwar road is completed, people on both sides stand to benefit economically,” said another resident. People also complain that the Matigawran-Warwan road project taken up by the government headed by the then Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, had been left midway. “Efforts should be made by the government to attract tourists by routing them via Kokernag, through the beautiful Warwan and Marwah valleys in Kishtwar,” said Dr Adil. |

JK Bank lose in Durand Cup
Jammu, August 17 Army Green dominated the game from the beginning. J&K Bank managed to gain momentum after some time but failed to score any goal despite making concerted efforts. Zubair Shah of J&K Bank got a chance in the 28th minute to take the lead but could not deliver. Prem Kumar of J&K again made a strong shot that was saved by the Army goalkeeper in the 36th minute. The first half ended without goal. In the second half, Prem Kumar of JK Bank again made brave attempt in the 48th and 70th minutes but Army Green defenders proved too good for him. Khalid Qayoom replaced Zubair Shah in 60th minute and it was Khalid’s wrong pass that allowed Army XI to open their account in the 60th minute. JKB goalkeeper Vikramjeet Singh conceded second goal by his own mistake by gifting a ball to Army Striker in the 85th minute of the match. The tournament is being organised by Durand Football Tournament Society. |
