Iftar parties galore in last week of Ramadan
Srinagar, August 12 Some of the hosts even change the day for their evening parties to avoid overlapping. Iftar (breaking the dawn-to-dusk fast) is organised in the evenings for the invitees from various communities and sections of society who gather at a place. Iftar parties were held this week by PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, DGP Ashok Prasad, separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani and GOC of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps of the Army Lt Gen Om Prakash. A number of such parties are also being organised at the district and local levels across the Valley. To avoid overlapping, the PDP had to reschedule its iftar party and hosted it on Friday evening to avoid a clash with that of DGP Prasad’s iftar party on Thursday. “With each passing day of the holy month, the fervour among rozdars (those keeping fast) goes up. The Army hosts a number of iftar parties during the month for the Awam,” a defence spokesman said. He added that in line with the tradition, Headquarters of Victor Force organised an iftar function for soldiers and civilians employed with it at Awantipora yesterday. The GOC, Victor Force, conveyed his best wishes to the people and prayed for their well-being and for peace and harmony in society, the spokesman said. “These parties are being organised at all the levels right from Company, Unit and Brigade levels,” said an Army spokesman. While the parties provide an opportunity to people to interact with representatives of various sections of society, many people are not able to attend the parties for varied reasons. Separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani who had also thrown a party did not attend it at a local hotel here on Monday. While the police had reportedly prevented him, it said Geelani had chosen not to leave his house for the iftar party. “It is good to host such congregations and offer food to everyone, cutting across religious lines, especially during the holy month of Ramadan,” said Ayaz Akbar, Geelani’s close aide. |

Murder victim’s kin await justice
Srinagar, August 12 The hardships of the family began with a late evening call on Yaseen’s cell phone in March 2011. Yaseen went out of his house to meet someone after attending the call, but never returned. Yaseen went missing on March 2, 2011 after he was called out of his house around 8 pm by Asif Habib. The family searched for Yaseen, the only breadwinner of the family, for 24 days but to no avail. The family and friends later held demonstrations, seeking government intervention in tracing the missing youth. After 24 days of search, his decomposed body was recovered from an under-construction sewerage tank of a local health centre located on the fringe of the village. The body was recovered accidentally by some school boys who were playing nearby. While a case under Section 302, RPC, was registered at the Sopore police station, the police failed solved the murder mystery, as no accused was arrested. Yaseen’s father Ghulam Nabi Mir (60) approached the High Court in April this year, seeking directions to the police to arrest the culprits. “The investigation has been hushed up under pressure exerted by MLA Javid Ahmad Dar, who holds a Cabinet portfolio in the state government. He has influenced the investigation, as his relative is an accused in the case. Besides, the sons of minister’s brother are accused in the case,” Mir submitted in his petition before the High Court. After passing directions during the subsequent hearing, the High Court has now sought the personal appearance of the Sopore SHO, who is investigating the case, for failing to act. Kin’s plea in court
In their submissions to the court, the parents have alleged that their son was eliminated by Asif Habib. The victim had a love affair with a village girl, Aroodah, alias Fancy. “Since Fancy’s parents were in favour of arranging her marriage with accused Asif Habib, son of Habibulah Dar, of Ladoora, Yaseen was eliminated under a well-planned conspiracy by Asif Habib along with other accused,” reads the petition before the court. |
