Amritsar, July 13
With farmers blocking the rail traffic at Manawala, about 10 km from Amritsar, passengers of about 20 arriving and departing trains were a harassed lot today.

Farmers, who took to the blockade to protest against inadequate power supply to the farm sector, squatted on busy Amritsar-Delhi track at around 2 pm and lifted their agitation about 7 pm.

The Amritsar railway station presented a picture of chaos and confusion. The number of passengers kept swelling at the station due to non-operation of trains.

A large number of waiting passengers flocked the enquiry counter to get the latest information. Many agitated passengers entered in to an argument with the railway staff at the window who expressed their helplessness on the matter.

A passenger, Jasbir Singh said he and his family were a trouble lot today. “There was no clean and vacant place left to sit at the station,” he said. He had come from Kolkata to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple and was to board Howrah Mail for the return journey. He said like other passengers, he was unsure when the train would depart.

Passengers of various arriving trains, stranded at Manawala, were taken for a ride by the blockade. Left stranded, many of passengers alighted from their trains to finish their journey by the road.

Coming to the holy city to spend weekend with her family, a student from Delhi, Priya Sood, said she was confused when the train was halted in the village. She called up her family members who came to Manawala.

However, not all passengers were as lucky as Priya. Passengers took the services of auto-rickshaws and tractor-trailers whose drivers did not leave any chance to mint money more than the usual days. Auto drivers charged Rs 30 per person and tractor-trailers Rs five per person to drop them on the GT Road from where the city is about 10 kms away.

After a gap of over two and a half decades, passengers from the Amritsar airport flew to Srinagar today.

As many as 60 passengers took the SpiceJet’s maiden Amritsar-Srinagar flight. And 59 passengers flew from Srinagar to Amritsar.

Suneel Dutt, Director, Sri Guru Ramdas Jee International Airport, said the flight, as anticipated, proved a hit among passengers. The flight from Amritsar took off an hour late due to inclement weather at Srinagar.

Among the first batch of 60 passengers who boarded the flight from Amritsar was Sanjay Chopra, a city-based tea trader. “Though I have some business contacts in the valley, I am visiting Srinagar with my family to enjoy the scenic beauty of the place,” he said.

Another passenger Arti, a resident of Chand Avenue, said, “My dream of visiting the valley is getting fulfilled today.”

A young passenger, Mukund said he had heard a lot about the beautiful vales and valleys of Srinagar from his grandfather who had business contacts there. “It is for the first time that I will visit the valley.”

Another young passenger, Drishti said her fantasy would come true when she would stay in a shikara in the Dal Lake.

Vrinda and Shrishti said they have seen pictures of the tulip garden situated in the Kashmir Valley on the internet.

A wish comes true

The operationalisation of the flight between Amritsar and Srinagar has met a long-pending demand of residents, businessmen, tourist operators and travel agents not only from the holy city but from the region.

Gunbir Singh, a tour and travel agent, said not only locals, but residents from the rest of India would prefer to board the flight from Amritsar. He said traditionally Amritsar has been the trade route to supply all kinds of material from the rest of India to the Kashmir Valley. At present, tea, textiles, spices, hardware and other merchandise are supplied from Amritsar to the Valley. In return, the traders receive supply of fresh fruits, dry fruits, rare herbs, quality shawls and others items from the valley, he added.

‘No jobs’ available, health workers’ course scrapped

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, July 13
The basic health workers’ course run by the Health and Family Welfare Training School here has been scrapped from this academic session. Though the state authorities have not given any official reason for the move, sources said the department took the decision to scrap the course as there is no job vacancy for pass-outs.

The training school used to admit around 60 students in a batch.

The sources said if trained, students would demand jobs. As the department does not need more health workers, it would be difficult to induct these passouts.

A student, presently pursuing the course, on the condition of anonymity, said, “Even in this batch, we are not sure to get a job.” He said the government-run training schools are chosen by students hoping that they would get jobs immediately after passing out.

Dr Ranjit Singh Buttar, District Family Welfare Officer and principal of the training school, said, “The course has been withdrawn from this year.”

He said they would propose to the authorities to start a course to train students in operation theatre assistance.

He said a shortage of such trained operation assistants is being felt by all quarters. “The course will help students find jobs,” said Dr Buttar.

He said they are also trying to introduce few new courses considering the latest demand in the market. He said a proposal in this regard would soon be sent to the state authorities and a course can be initiated if we get the permission.

Amritsar, July 13
With the monsoons arriving, the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Civil Hospital has acquired a machine worth Rs 32 lakh to extract platelets from blood in view of the dengue threat in the city. The hospital has got a separate isolated ward ready for the patients.

The Apherisis machine would help extract platelets from the blood while the other components can again be put to circulation in the body of the donor, said Senior Medical Officer Dr Balbir Singh Dhillon.

While a patient is suffering from dengue, platelet count in his body goes down. To replenish the platelets in the blood, doctors have to give platelets from outside. The service at private clinics costs around 15,000 for a single donor.

However, Dr Dhillon said, “Here the kits required for the process can be bought from Jan Aushdi store at a cost of around Rs 6,700. The hospital would charge Rs 200 for the service.”

Dr Ashwani Sondhi, District Health Officer, said chances of the disease are high during the monsoons. He advised people not to let rainwater stored in empty vessels. “Residents should replace water on a regular basis in their air coolers,” said Sondhi.

District Epidemiologist Dr Charanjit Singh said the health department has taken 2,200 samples during a survey on the water-borne diseases. He said around 1.13 lakh chlorine tablets have been distributed in different localities of the city.

Civil Surgeon Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai said, “We have got sufficient number of kits. We have also got a 24-bed isolated ward prepared especially for dengue patients.” Dr Ghai said a meeting of the heads of the various departments was held and they were asked to adopt precautionary measures. He said private hospitals in the city have been instructed to inform the Civil Surgeon office whenever a case is reported anywhere in the district.

Previous year, the city had witnessed more than 100 dengue cases.
