Amritsar, July 6
A sudden drop in temperature and cloudy morning on Friday had Amritsar residents breathing a sigh of relief. The early morning showers came as a happy surprise for residents, who were reeling under extreme heatwave and heavy power cuts.

The rain brought a respite from heat and rising mercury. But, the temperature and humidity increased later in day, much to the disappointment of the citizens.

As the city got in the mood to welcome the monsoon, the changed weather in the afternoon came as a disappointment. “I had my hopes high and was ready to soak in the first rain of the monsoons. But the bright sun later spoiled my plans,” shares Smriti Arora, a BCom student form BBK DAV.

“The weather has been quite unpredictable this year. The summers are extreme this year and monsoons are late. Let’s hope that this rain marks the onset of the monsoon,” said Anupam Dayal, a retired government officer from Adarsh Nagar.

“The heat seems to be never ending. I hope it gets over and we can breathe in the cool monsoon breeze in a few days,” said Sahil Madaan, a student of Khalsa College.

Jan Aushadhi store hit by shortage of medicines

Amritsar, July 6
Aimed at providing generic medicines to poor patients on discounted rates or at no-profit-no-loss basis, the Jan Aushadhi store at Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Civil Hospital is fast loosing steam.

It’s all because of negligent attitude of the authorities concerned and the public sector pharmaceutical companies, which are responsible for providing generic medicines to the store, failing to meet the demand.

Absence of local purchase of medicines has also compounded the problem thus defeating the purpose for which the store was opened.

Due to unavailability of prescribed drugs at the store, it is running in losses. Further, patients have to procure medicines from stores located outside the hospital at exorbitant rates.

Ram Kumar, who accompanied a patient in the Civil Hospital, said, “Medicines, which I needed, were not available in Jas Aushadhi store. So I had to purchase medicines from a medical store located outside the hospital at a very high cost. The government should make appropriate arrangements for providing medicines at the store, otherwise which the authorities should shut it down.”

“On an average 300-400 patients visit the store daily, but out of these we could fulfil requirement of about 100 patients as the medicines prescribed to the remaining patients are not available with us,” said a staff member.

Dr HS Ghai, Deputy Medical Commissioner and Officiating Civil Surgeon, while admitting the problem said the Punjab Health System Corporation (PHSC) has given its go-ahead for the local purchase of generic medicines.

“Earlier, the then Additional Deputy Commissioner has banned the local purchase. Now as we have received the permission, I have talked to Sandeep Rishi, present ADC, in this connection. Hopefully, we will restart the local purchase and overcome the shortage of the medicines within next few days,” said Dr Ghai.

“We are also facing problems as the public sector pharmaceutical companies associated with Jan Aushadhi stores have failed to ensure proper supply of medicines.”

“Suppose we demand a stock of 8,000 tablets of a particular medicine, they provide us only 2,000 tablets and that too very late,” he pointed out while adding that only two companies are active at present while remaining companies never met the demanded supply.

Launch of 24x7 store

The 24X7 drug store was launched by the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals in November 2008. Initially, Hindustan Antibiotic Limited (HAL) was authorised to run the store. But a year later, it was hit by fund misappropriation blues after which the HAL authorities withdrew from its operation and its functioning was handed over to the Red Cross Society by Punjab Health System Corporation (PHSC) and the state government with the consent of the Bureau of Pharmaceutical PSU’s of India.

PSUs responsible to provide medicines

Six public sector pharmaceutical companies which are responsible for providing medicines to the Jan Aushadhi store are Rajasthan Drug Pharmaceutical Limited, Indian Drug Pharmaceutical Limited, Hindustan Antibiotic Limited, Bangal Chemical Pharmaceutical Limited, Karnataka Antibiotic Pharmaceutical Limited and Hindustan Latex limited (HLL).

Two motorcycle-borne youths snatched a purse of one Punit Kaur, who along with her US-based NRI father Jagjit Singh, was returning home in Rani Ka Bagh on a cycle rickshaw here late last evening.

The incident took place near Mahindra Colony. They had gone to Delhi for her interview in the US embassy and arrived in Amritsar on Shatbadi Express late in the evening.

"My daughter initially resisted their attempt due to which they lost balance and fell on the road. But before we could do anything they got up and fled away," Jagjit said.

In December last, unidentified persons had snatched the purse of Punit. She had an I-phone mobile, a camera, gold and diamond jewellery worth over Rs one lakh and Rs 10,000 cash in the purse and was going to market for shopping.

Coming: Yaaran Naal Baharan 2
Sequel bug bites Punjabi film industry

Amritsar, July 6
After the hit sequel formula brought in moolah for the Bollywood, it's Pollywood's turn to improvise on the successful mantra. The first attempt at it is the sequel of the 2005 Jimmy Sheirgill hit Yaaran Naal Baharan.

The film, Yaaran Naal Baharan 2, runs on the same script of being a youth-oriented film. With fresh faces and fresh storyline, that producer Preetpal Sheirgill refuses to divulge, the film promises to be as entertaining as the earlier one. "It's a new story, but treated with same edgy, youth oriented flavour. Most of the shooting of the film has been done in Sirsa, parts of Rajasthan, Patiala and Mumbai," he shares.

In city, the entire star cast of the film interacted with the crowd at the Alpha One and then visited the Golden Temple.

Bringing the film scoops of new talent are the three newcomers, two of which are Rajwinder Sumal aka Goldy and Rishita Monga. Both newcomers are excited about their addition to the filmville. "The film has given us opportunity to work with seniors like Yograj Singh and Shivinder Mahal. It has a good story, is a complete family entertainer and I hope it gets a good response," says the lead actor Goldy. Yograj is returning to the Punjabi film industry after nine long years with this film. Talking about his absence from the silver screen, he says, "The reason I left the industry nine years ago was because back then, filmmakers didn't know how to treat actors; we were treated like servants. Now, things have changed." The actor, who has worked in Hollywood movie West is West, and Kalpana Lajmi's Kaanch, is trying his luck in Bollywood too. His character in Yaaran Naal Baharan 2 is that of former Punjab DGP KPS Gill, who, during Punjab insurgency was accused of human rights violation, in the name of stamping out terrorism.

"KPS Gill is a friend. I have met him a few times, and my role would clearly depict that Gill somewhere knew he was wrong, but because of his powerful position, couldn't confess his folly. My character in the film will be apologising on his behalf," says Yograj.

Speaking about his famous Yuvraj, he said he is happy that his son is loved by everyone even during the hardest of times. "But as a father, I think I have done my bit. Yuvraj is quite levelheaded and mature by now to make his own life decisions."

‘Fresh’ start

With fresh faces and fresh storyline, the film promises to be as entertaining as the earlier one that had Jimmy Shergill in the lead.

Amritsar, July 6
A long demand of city residents, hotel industry, travel agents and businessmen for more domestic air connectivity from Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport may become a reality as Mantra Airways has sought an approval for starting flights connecting the holy city with Chandigarh, Dharamsala and Jammu.

Airport Director Sunil Dutt said the airline has forwarded its request for operating flights to different destinations. He said these flights would widen the scope for the tourists visiting the holy city from across the country and the world.

A businessman, Kamal Dalmia, said there was a need for air connectivity to the state capital to save over four-hour-long travel by road.

Gunbir Singh, member, CII National Planning Council, said a flight to Chandigarh would spell a boon for the business class. And flights to Dharamsala and Jammu would link the holy city with tourist circuits of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

He said both neighbouring states have picturesque locations with immense flow of tourists. He anticipated that these flights would offer choice to tourists to plan their vacations accordingly and they would be able to see more places in a limited time. Besides, religious tourism would also get boost as Vaishno Devi shrine is located near Jammu and many temples are spread across Himachal Pradesh.

Spice Jet has earlier announced to launch a flight (four days a week) from Amritsar to Srinagar from July 12.

The Airport Director said though the Airport Authority of India was not responsible to provide air connectivity, he has approached the AAI as well as written to various international airlines about the advantages of operating flights on various international and domestic routes from here.
