City mourns the loss of its mighty son
Amritsar, July 12 A wrestler, Pappu Pehalwan, said he grew up with Dara Singh as his icon and wants to emulate him in his life. He said Dara Singh had achieved an unbelievable mark of having acted in more than 100 films after his career as free-style wrestler. He also went on to become a member of the Rajya Sabha, he said. Another wrestler, Jasbir, said no other wrestler has matched the standards set by Dara Singh. It will be a mammoth task for wrestlers to prove their mettle in the game. His swift shift to the tinsel town is also remarkable, he said. Demands of wrestling and acting fields are different. Wrestling demands brute force and the latter seeks sensitivity and control of emotions as a performer. Members of the Sarhad-E-Punjab Sports Club condoled the death of the iconic personality who effortlessly slipped into the shoes of an accomplished actor after toiling and grinding hard to become an ace wrestler and earning name and fame for the country. Randhir Pehalwan said, “It thrills me to know that the ace wrestler had once honed his skills here in the city and I wish to emulate him in my life.” Other wrestlers Satish and Pawan said Dara Singh elevated the wrestling to a level which no other wrestler has achieved since independence. The BJP leader Tarun Chugh termed the demise of Rustam-E-Hind as a great loss to the nation. a hero forever — RANDHEER PEHALWAN, WRESTLER No other wrestler has matched the standards set by Dara Singh. delay
in recruitment GS Paul Tribune News Service
Amritsar, July 12 Direct impact of the delay can be seen in the lack of cleanliness of the city. There are 2,000 safai karamcharis registered with the MC and 1,000 more are required to keep the city clean. More than 25,000 applications were received during the interviews held for one month. Applicants included science graduates and students hailing from Jalandhar, Patti, Pathankot and Ludhiana. A committee was to be constituted to scrutinise fresh applicants as well as those who were hired on a temporary basis to regularise their services. The process got delayed after the MC polls were announced. Sources said a pact was signed between the ruling alliance and the safai karamcharis prior to the assembly polls and the corporation elections to regularise their services as well as hire new employees. The issue was a part of the agenda of political parties during the Assembly polls. In April the AMC had hired 103 Class IV employees on compassionate grounds. These included safai karamcharis hired out of the kin of those employees who had expired. After that the decision to hire another lot of 346 more employees was taken. Applications were invited from May 1. The candidates were required to be educated at least till the middle standard and aged between 18 to 35 years. Thousands of graduates and school students too queued up for the post. Surinder Tona, general secretary of Municipal Corporation Workers Union, Amritsar, said the process got delayed due to the sudden announcement of the MC polls. “Earlier the recruitment process was stalled due to the assembly elections, now it is getting delayed as the new MC house is to be constituted. Till then no meeting or decision can be taken,” he said. Charan Das, president of Punjab Municipal Workers Union, said there is an acute shortage of safai karamcharis in city. “When the corporation came into being in 1976 five persons used to accompany the garbage trolleys. Later, this number kept reducing whereas the area under the MC expanded to 65 wards. Now, we can spare just two persons for the same job,” he said. official speak — asha anand, superintendent, amc It is a norm to take the approval of the MC house and under the present circumstances, only the new house will deliberate over the issue — Dharam Pal Gupta, MC Commissioner |

Computer snag at OPD slip counter leaves patients in the lurch
Amritsar, July 12 The computer, which was used to generate OPD slips for patients, went out of order. These computer-generated slips are necessary to meet doctors at the hospital. The problem could be rectified only after two hours. But patients and their attendants, who had started visiting the counter since 8.30 am (the time OPD starts functioning), had to stand in queues for two hours. Though the hospital authorities said as the computer developed some snag, they started issuing manual slips to patients, but patients and their relatives said no such arrangement was made to help them. Patients said they had to stand in queues to get the slip which is must to meet doctors. “We had to stand in a queue for about an hour. Persons working on the computer told us that they could not issue the slip as the computer had developed a snag. The authorities should made back up arrangements in such cases so that patients coming from faraway places are not harassed,” said Ram Lal, who had come for the treatment of his son. “If the computer had developed any problem, the staff responsible for issuing the slip should have issued manual slips. And after rectifying the problem, they could have uploaded the record in the computer. But, the officials did not initiate manual issuing of slips and preferred to wait till the problem was solved,” said patient Jagjit Singh. A doctor preferring anonymity said, “When I came to the OPD, I was surprised to see no patient. Later, I came to know of the problem.” Dr Satpal, Medical Superintendent, GNDH, said the problem was rectified by 10.30 am. “As it took time to rectify the snag, we started issuing manual slips,” he added. |
