Unique Home inmates allowed to visit water amusement park

Jalandhar, June 19
After a week-long restricted stay, the management of Unique Home was allowed by the district administration to take the children for an outing to a water amusement park - Wonderland - situated at Tajpur village on the outskirts of the city today.

Sixty inmates along with managing director of the orphanage Prakash Kaur went to Wonderland this evening amidst tight security by the city police. No representative from the administration reached the Unique Home.

Earlier, the trip was scheduled for Saturday, but could not materialise as the administration had given only verbal permission for the same. The orphanage authorities demanded a written permission before proceeding for an outdoor activity, as they were already under scanner for functioning without a legal standing.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, SDM-II Isha Kalia said they allowed the inmates following a written request made by them yesterday. “In fact the very next day, we had allowed the girls to go for tuitions as well. The only concern is registration of the orphanage under the Juvenile Justice Act, the process of which is already underway,” she added.

Kalia said considering the wellbeing of the girls, the administration allowed them to stay in Unique Home. “The administration has not restricted any movements of the inmates as such, but since the matter is being pursued with the Social Security and Women and Child Development Department, we have to take action accordingly,” she said.

It is pertinent to mention here that on June 12 Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti had ordered the shifting of 60 girls living in Unique Home to other orphanages in the city.

The decision had come following an inspection of Unique Home conducted by Deputy Director, Social Security and Women and Child Development, Rajnish Kumar.

The administration had immediately taken possession of the orphanage until the process of registering Unique Home under the Juvenile Justice Act was done. Though the action of the administration was met with protests from local residents, but things normalised after the administration agreed to go soft with the orphanage authorities and primarily the kids.

Patients forced to bring own table fans in Civil Hospital

Jalandhar, June 19
In this scorching heat of June, what if somebody is asked to manage without a ceiling fan or run the show with slow working fans and erratic power supply? Surely, this description is enough to give anyone a nightmarish experience, but this is a reality at the Civil Hospital.

These days the Female Surgical Ward, situated on the third floor of the Civil Hospital, is depicting this picture, following which the patients, who have undergone surgeries, are forced to bring their own table fans in the ward.

But sadly, not all the patients could afford to bring their own table fans, hence many patients were beating the heat by lying on the floor of the corridors of the hospital. “It is difficult to cope up with the soaring mercury and the fans of the ward are virtually non-existent. During afternoons, it becomes suffocating for us to stay inside the ward and we prefer to sleep out in the corridors,” said Asha Rani, a patient.

She said uninterrupted power cuts were also adding to their problems. “Leave power cuts, even when the electricity supply is there it is very difficult to keep lying on the bed and that, too, with fans not working properly. Whenever there is a power cut, barring a few patients who are not supposed to move, everybody is found sitting in the corridors,” she added.

As if this was not enough, the ward has shortage of fans, too. Patient beds are lined up closely, while the four ceiling fans are situated far off in the ward, adding to the woes of the patients.

Inderjeet Kaur, another patient, who brought her own table fan said, “I underwent a major surgery and it was not good for me to stay without proper ventilation and cooling system. The doctors told us to bring our own fan and we went ahead. Since I am in the post-operative stage, perspiration due to soaring mercury can lead to serious problems.”

Her attendants said this was a major problem and the hospital staff should bring this problem to the notice of the authorities concerned. “How would the doctors know the plight of the patients, as they have water coolers and air-conditioner facility,” said an attendant.

The patients also maintained that while the private hospitals have air-conditioned rooms and wards for surgery patients, the Civil Hospital was lacking in the basic facility of providing proper and adequate fans in the ward. “We hope that some sense prevails upon the Civil Hospital authorities and they take up this matter seriously,” patients added.
