Jalandhar, June 15
Even as the BJP core committee met at Chandigarh first time after the MC polls, the local politicians and MC top officials were all ears as to what might happen with regard to the Mayoral post.

The meeting which was to begin at 6 pm, began after 7.30 pm. The city was represented by Local Bodies Minister and MLA, Jalandhar (West), Bhagat Chunni Lal, MLA Jalandhar (Central), Manoranjan Kalia and MLA, Jalandhar (North), KD Bhandari.

While Kalia is supporting the candidature of Ward 38 councillor Ravi Mahendru, Bhandari is vouching for Ward 5 councillor Sunil Jyoti. Both of them are second timers. Minta Kochhar, a first-timer from Ward 27, is also in the race.

Asked about any developments, BJP district president Subhash Sud said: "It is an initial stage. The opinion of all councillors is to be sought. A formal decision of the MLAs is also to be taken. A consensus will have to be reached. The process will take a few days."

Says Ravi Mahendru: "I have my fingers crossed. You never know what happens till the last moment. I was seen as a candidate even in the previous tenure. I have better chances this time being much more seasoned." Mahendru's fate will also be seen as Kalia's current standing in the party. The latter claims to have performed good this time with 11 out of 17 seats.

Sunil Jyoti, on the other hand, claims himself to be the first choice of Chief Parliamentary Secretary Bhandari as well as the outgoing Mayor Rakesh Rathour with whom he remained closely associated. "I do not want to comment on the issue. Only time will tell," he said.

Meanwhile, the Dalit councillor from Ward 52, one of the two successful candidates from the 17 wards falling in the kitty of the Local Bodies Minister, too, has staked his claim. "There should be no reason why the minister will not support me," he says as others comment that this time the Mayor's post is likely to go to a general category candidate. There also is a possibility of the RSS leaders playing a card for its candidate Kochhar.

After a hectic schedule during the MC polls, officials of the district administration seem to be in a mood to take a break from work. Since the coming Saturday-Sunday will be the first weekend which the officials on poll duties will be able to enjoy almost after a month, some of them have combined it with two additional offs. As schools and colleges are already closed for the summer break, it gives an additional reason for officials to freak out with families.

Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti is said to be away for a break since Thursday and so is his better half Alaknanda Dayal, DC, Kapurthala. The twosome will be back on Monday.

SDM-1 Iqbal Singh Sandhu, too, is reportedly away to Delhi for a master’s training programme in connection with the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Since District Transport Officer, Kapurthala, Daljit Kaur is on leave, Jalandhar DTO RL Jassal has been doing duty there for the time-being. Language officer Manpreet Singh Bal is also availing leaves for quite sometime ahead of his retirement due in a month or two.

As the High Court is already for a month-long summer break and district courts are also close for a 15-day break from tomorrow onwards, advocates and officials of various departments engaged in legal works are also enjoying the break.

For the same reason, city-based lawyers have already planned holidays. Arvind Sharda, an advocate, said his family and families of five other lawyers were going to Dalhousie and Palampur.

Water hydrants near Azad Sabzi Mandi non-functional

Jalandhar, June 15
The major fire tragedy at the local Azad Sabzi Mandi could have been averted had the water hydrants installed at some of the key intersections and roundabouts of cantonment were functional on the ill-fated night of June 12.

Not even a singly water hydrant was functional out of the total 18 installed in Sadar Bazaar and surrounding areas. The fact came to light after the fire incident in the market following which the cantonment board authorities have swung into action.

Chief executive officer (CEO) of the cantonment board Vibha Sharma asked officials to check the water hydrants immediately and ensure that they remain functional. “A day after the fire incident, I ordered the staff to check all water hydrants,” she added.

Sources said that cantonment board authorities were at fault as they never bothered to check the condition of the water hydrants which could have started the initial job of dousing the flames on the fateful night.

“The water hydrants are very old. Probably, it is difficult to ascertain their year of installation. The cantonment board authorities should ensure that all 18 water hydrants are made functional to avoid such incidents,” a residents of the area said.

Shopkeepers maintained that some of the water hydrants were near the sabzi mandi and that the extent of loss could have been much less if they were in a working condition. This is a matter of public concern and should be addressed immediately, they demanded.

A major fire had not just engulfed the entire sabzi mandi, but had also reached the nearby commercial Bawa Complex. “As the cantonment board parking lot is adjacent to the sabzi mandi, residents rushed to save their vehicles,” said Ravi Kumar Sahota, a shopkeeper.

Councillors seek fire station at cantt

Jalandhar, June 15
Following the fire incident which engulfed the entire Azad Sabzi Mandi on Tuesday night, elected members of the Jalandhar cantonment board have demanded setting up of a fire station in Sadar Bazaar.

A long-pending demand of cantonment residents and those residing in the nearby villages, the fire station has now been proposed adjacent to the sabzi mandi.

The councillors have suggested a vacant piece of land of the cantonment next to the market and surrounded by a water tank to be used for setting up of a fire station. As the sabzi mandi is situated in the heart of the cantonment, the councillors feel it would serve the public better.

Coincidentally, the councillors had discussed the need to set up a fire brigade station at one of the agendas of the board meeting held recently. However, at that time no consensus was reached.

Avinash Chander Sharma, the elected member of the board, said they were looking forward to a meeting with Jalandhar (Cantonment) MLA Pargat Singh for pacing up the process of setting up a fire station. “After two fire incidents and that too at the same site, the state government should ensure immediate release of funds for the fire station,” he said.

The councillors added that ideally a fire station should have been set up soon after the fire incident of May 1998. The then state government did not pay any heed to it, said councillors.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, chief executive officer of the cantonment board Vibha Sharma said: “This issue was discussed at the board meeting. But we are dependent on the local MLA for the grant to set up the fire station. We are hopeful that Pargat Singh will pursue the case with the state government soon.”

Sources said the cantonment board has agreed to provide land and telephone connection facility for setting up of the fire brigade station. “We have decided to demand one fire tender from the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation,” said a councillor.

On June 12 night, fire tenders of the Army were first to reach the spot. Even the water tanker of cantonment board reached well on time, but delay in passing on the message led to a huge loss, said shopkeepers who were present in the market on the fateful night.
